not really that extreme but slackware is a good choice. it's community is so helpful and you it provides a guide (that could be used by any distro) that teaches alot of aspects that you won't normally bother knowing.

I was going to install Debian Stretch when the stable ver. drops and properly get into this whole gnu linux thing
