Posted this in last thread but it died straight away:

Anyone know why releasing keys has a delay on Ubuntu? 'Slow keys' isn't on.

When I press a key it stays on for a time after I've released it. For example if I use caps lock to type the first letter of a word, it'll still be on for long enough to caps the second letter (e.g. EXample). Also means that if I'm gaymen and I press alt to do something, then tab to check keyboard, it'll alt tab and minimize the game. Really fucking annoying.

I'm using a PS2 keyboard if it matters, and I don't have this problem on Windows.
>>
Reminder that all distros are essentially the same.
>>
>>58700902
Pretty weird. I've never heard of anyone having that issue before.
>>
>>58701032
Ye all that comes up in Google is people having problems with delayed inputs. The inputs are fine, but it's coming off keys thats delayed. It's wierd because I'm pretty sure PS2 is interrupt based so I dunno why it happens.
>>
>>58700902
Maybe you could try these generic ideas?
>Reboot
>Upgrade
>Install 16.04 if you haven't already
>>
>>58701085
How sure are you that it's not just specific applications?

The thing you said about alt+tab and the modifier key sticking sounds like a bug I've had with steam occasionally thinking modifier keys are held down when they're really not
>>
>>58701371
Even terminal does it so I'm pretty sure it has to be the OS.
>>
>>58700658
How do I stop compton putting shadows behind conky?
I already tried
--shadow-exclude 'class_g = "Conky"'

And I made sure I have "own_window_class Conky" on my conkyrc
I also tried
own_window_type desktop

But that makes conky float over all other windows.

I have a font which, when installed, manages to make itself the font fontconfig chooses for some Japanese glyphs.

I tried disabling it with a fontconfig config that looks like this:

<?xml version="2.0"?>
<!DOCTYPE fontconfig SYSTEM "fonts.dtd">
<fontconfig>
<selectfont>
<rejectfont>
<pattern>
<patelt name="family">
<string>EPSON Kyokasho</string>
</patelt>
</pattern>
</rejectfont>
</selectfont>
</fontconfig>

which works, but makes it so that trying to use the font explicitly won't work, which defeats the purpose of having it installed at all.

Anyone know how I can fix my problem?
>>
I've been using Linux for years, but that hasn't cured my retardation.

What's the best rm alias/function I can use to avoid nuking up directories.

I am thinking about something that warns me if the directories to be deleted have a specific filename or if they are quite large.

I need some input. Common sense is not my repos.

I'm fucking around with my setup to use AMDGPU instead of radeon on my computer.
Currently, it works fine, but when I start my computer, there is a pink line down the left side of my monitor.
Apparently this is caused by AMDGPU not supporting HDMI audio (yet) and using such a connection.
The fix was to run
xrandr --output HDMI-A-0 --auto --set audio off
.

I don't want to have to run such a command when I turn on my computer though, and putting in my .xinitrc seems kind of hacky.
So does anyone know how I add this to my xorg.conf(.d)? I'm looking through the man pages and I'm not seeing anything about audio.

close, headless is when the machine has no display directly attached to it

even something like setting up a game server on a windows xp box and then removing the display is enough to call it a "headless server"

though still, most actual servers don't have graphical software installed, for the other reasons you mention

>Everyone hates systemd because it's made by red hat and NSA
>Everyone also blindly supports wayland made by the same two groups
Explain this
>>
>>58704477
Because systemd aimed to replace a perfectly functioning init system, and then did a whole load of extra unrelated shit.

Wayland just wants to replace X, which is such a bad hack job everybody is surprised it even works at all.

Moving over to wayland is like taking your car to the shop to get the oil filter changed because you havent done it in like 5 years.

Moving to systemd is like taking your car to the shop to get a tire replaced because the tread is running low, and the mechanic changes ALL of the tires, throws away 3 in perfectly good condition, and runs a whole service you didn't fucking ask for. He also fiddled with the radio and now it cuts out for no obvious reason every 200 miles.
>>
>>58704517
i3 and openbox perfectly work in X, they work only in X, I don't care about your car bull shit.
>>
>>58704540
>>58704477
X is inherently insecure. There is absolutely nothing stopping one program from stealing the keyboard input (e,g, passwords) from another and messing with other clients in all sorts of ways.
It's also a monolith of obsolete hacks, and is basically intractable to everyone except the most senior of X developers.
There is more than enough reason to change to something else. Even most X developers think this.
>>
>>58704595
>from stealing the keyboard input

>>58700721
Just one partition, root. Then make as swapfile for 8GB just so suspend won't shit itself. In this day and age there's no reason for seperate /boot, /var, and /home unless you're autistic. It's leftover from the old Unix days when they were litereally seperate physical drives.

Radeon cards are OK as long as the free kernel-drm/xorg based radeon/amdgpu drivers support them well.

fglrx is SHIT and deprecated in modern distros.

Some /g/entooman got hired by AMD to work on fglrx, he once did a Q&A and said that the fglrx code is a fucking mess.
AMD also hired programmers to work on the open source radeon/amdgpu drivers, however I heard terrible things about them.

why is it so hard to find non-obtuse documentation for something as simple as setting up rsync for laptop/desktop use through ssh

It's like they're all written by people incapable of explaining, succinctly, how to keep it safe, and how to actually do it at a basic level.
Ensuring you're safe is glossed over. >"Yeah make sure you're safe, disable password authentication"

Actually try reading it and feel free to tell me where it says how to set it up, without using terminology whose recognition implies already fucking knowing how to do it, with the manpages being an afterthought

It's like if I tried to explain to you how you can make a man-shaped molecule
>Yeah it's super simple, all you need is a conjugated diene and a dienophile with an anhydrous cycloalkene or cycloalkene, which acts as a dienophile, and you're good. It's the easiest thing in the world lmao don't you know your resonance structures
like, it's the most fucking insane way to write guides I've ever seen, and it only happens in Unix circles
The documentation SHOULD be precise and unambiguous and use the correct terminology, but it does NOT lend itself to learning at all, it is a reference manual for those who've already learned

>>58708977
I'm not sure if you don't know what ad hominem means, but yes, I have. sshd_config's manpages is just one huge list of keywords and aren't something one can actually use, because it does not teach good practices, it just explains what words mean

I don't have issue setting it up, I have issue setting it up and knowing that I set it up properly, and didn't just do a hackjob.

"Good enough" is not good enough, especially when doing something as potentially harmful as setting up ssh (albeit openSSH does mention disabling password authentication in its wiki, the whole thing is very anemic beyond just explaining in the general what words mean and how to do individual actions. It doesn't explain which actions SHOULD be done)

I'd just like to interject for moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Question about Gentoo.
I'm bored, so I wanna install Gentoo. Long time Arch user, so how badly can it go? I'll figure it out. So scoping out what packages are where- and I see everything I want/need. Except for my wireless drivers.
tl;dr I need to use Broadcom-wl on Arch. b43 and brcm80211 both give issues (b43 constant drops, brcm I get a consistent drop every 5 minutes on the dot. I've determined I need broadcom-wl, even though I'd love to use the proper open drivers...)

This brings me to my question- This is the AUR package, named Broadcom-wl (https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/broadcom-wl/). I see that there's a package through gentoo named broadcom-sta (https://packages.gentoo.org/packages/net-wireless/broadcom-sta). These both link back to the same Broadcom page, so I'm going to assume they're the same damn package?

# fsck -f /dev/sdb1
fsck from util-linux 2.29.1
fsck.fat 4.1 (2017-01-24)
0x41: Dirty bit is set. Fs was not properly unmounted and some data may be corrupt.
1) Remove dirty bit
2) No action

I wonder how I'm able to read from a damaged disk?
>>
>>58711749
what happens when you run this
# dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdb
>>
>>58711782
dd: failed to open '/dev/sdb': Read-only file system
>>
>>58711796
that doesn't make any sense
/dev/sdb does not represent a file system (single partition), it's a device (a whole drive)
check the permissions for the /dev/sdb file
should probaly look like this brw-rw----
>>
>>58711796
also, is it by any chance mounted?
>>
>>58711796
>>58711846

I've had a similar situation happen to me before; the problem was hardware failure. No matter what I tried, it insisted it was read-only. Your USB drive is probably toast, sadly.
>>
>>58711881
It definitely is, but how come I'm able to read from it?
>>
>>58711939
Who knows. All I know is that attempting to write to it likely won't succeed. You're probably better off trying to locate a different USB drive if possible.
Sorry.
>>
>>58711881
Some kinda failsafe mode to recover data?

I'm going to do something radical: I'm going to clone my phone's SD card to an ISO image, clone my installation medium onto it, see if I can boot from it, and pray I don't knock a cord in the process. Wish me luck /g/entoomen

trying to compile icecat on debian stable

this error message keeps showing up

http://pastebin.com/raw/tmkctE5B

how exactly would you resolve it?
>>
>>58712214
It tells you right smack dab in the middle faggot. Come on
>>
>>58711749
Maybe it's mounted ? Unmount the partition.
>>
>>58712246
I'm sorry I should of clarified

I know it's looking for Virtualenv, but when I check to see if I have that with sudo apt-get install virtualenv, it says I already have it

at that point I'm not entirely sure *how* to "define the
MOZILLA_CENTRAL_PATH environment variable" or if the file itself is borked since it says it "the source archive was
likely not created properly"

you're right that I did overlook mentioning that, but I do still would like to know how to continue
>>
>>58712330
You find out how to set an environmental variable.

If only there was a gigantic fucking resource of knowledge somewhere
>>
>>58712265
You're supposed to mount a partition before running fsck I think. Otherwise it also complains about being read-only. I've already thrown the damned thing in that little area in the corner of my room I call the trash, and am now trying to use my phone's SD card as a live USB.

>>
>>58712384
There is "friendly" then there is "enabling retards who cant fucking google".
Come back after setting the path
>>
>>58712348
Yes, well, the resources about environmental variables are rather comprehensive about bash when I am just looking for a simple solution so I can compile this thing

I am not saying I'm not looking it up -- because I did, and I actually always do look things up while posting a question here

but I am just curious if there was something obvious that I missed to fix this because I am absolutely sure it's as obvious as you make it seem to be

So step-by-step, how would you do resolve this if you're such an expert?

I can't boot it at all, not even with the rescue option. What the actual fuck is wrong with Fedora?

I really wanted to use it, but goddamn.

Funny thing is that I played around with it for at least a month after launch and had no problems.

well, I figured it out -- the problem was that one path name isn't supposed to have a space in it

I didn't need to mount an environmental variable at all

thanks

So my work decided to throw away a couple of Dell Optiplex 780 shitboxes that had Windows Vista. Being the poorfag that I am, I salvaged a couple of them that actually did turn on and POST. I'm Installing Ubuntu Mate right now, since the last time I used Ubuntu was about 10 years ago and Unity is shit.

I want to be a linux Wizard like my co-workers... How Do I start? How do I get rid of the fear of the CLI? I've been lurking this thread for only a couple days now.
