What VNC server do people use? Tightvncserver has a retarded and awkward configuration
All I want to do is to remote control my machine with my Android using bvnc (over ssh)
Couple of people in the last thread recommended x2go (NX-based) and TigerVNC but I was wondering if there was something better.

I realise it's a windows system but still. One win10 I could navigate directly to a folder, on the share and play a movie or whatever no problems. No login either.

On linux I needed to login "it was user user for the username adn password but windows never needed it) and it would always crash if I tried to stream, I had ot copy files onto my computer and then play them. idk. I have it all working now so I can stream at least.

I have a GTX 970 video card and I'm trying to run Mint Cinnamon on VirtualBox, but it starts in software rendering mode and when I install drivers from PPA (I've tried different versions, in theory they should work) after restarting the machine xorg shits itself and I have to uninstall the drivers from the terminal and reboot to have the DE working again (in software mode). Wat do?
>>
>>58692381
>>58692492
>lightweight
>fully featured
>with vim-like keyboard options
>doesn't use webkit
The most lightweight browsers out there are links and dillo.
They can both display pictures but aren't fully featured and they don't support vim-like keyboard controls.

Next in the line are Dwb and Uzbl which are fully featured and support vim keybindings but they aren't minimal and they are based on webkit.

Lastly you can give up and use Firefox and Chromium with vimfx and cvim respectively for vim capability.

man, most music players look like dead abandoned projects. Deadbeef seems to be updated but last time was 8 months ago
>>

gmusicbrowser if you just want simple and intuitive GUI and ease of setup for using ALSA output. Maybe a little bit buggy on graphics, like the corrupted playback control buttons, but it doesn't matter.
If you mind the buggy graphics, and/or want a Foobar2000 counterpart on Linux, then DeadBeef. It also allows easy setup to use ALSA.

You don't need NetworkManager to babysit you, all you need is wpa_supplicant, iw for discovering networks and dhcpcd (or dhclient) to acquire your IP address.
It's quite a simple config, here's how it looks
network={
ssid="network1"
psk="pass1"
priority=3
}
network={
ssid="network2"
psk="pass2"
priority=2
}
network={
ssid="network3"
psk="pass3"
priority=2
}
network={
ssid="network4"
psk="pass4"
priority=1
}

The greater the priority integer is, the higher the prioity for that network is.
If networks have the same priority, wpa_supplicant connects to the one with the stronger signal.
If, say network3 and network2 are your friends' home and your home networks (respectively), and you're at your friends', when you get home wpa_supplicant will automatically disconnect you from network3 and connect you to network2.
And maybe network1 is your phone's wifi hotspot (when you need a second IP for shitposting), because it has the highest priority you will connect to your phone's network first and when you turn off the hotspot, you'll auto connect to your home network.
It won't auto connect you to a network of higher priority if you're already connected to a network of lower priority, so you'll need to restart the service for that.

Say I wanted to set up i3 on a computer that may on occasion be used by others (mostly by me though)

Is there any way to make it intuitive for others to launch some common applications (mostly just firefox, maybe a file browser)?

I supposed I could actually write "fucking press <HOTKEYS> to launch applications" directly on the wallpaper so they would know
But is there any kind of clickable menu you can get for i3 to launch applications?
>>
>>58694945

>>
>>58693809

If you're using systemd, all you need to do is copy the systemd unit file from
/usr/lib/systemd/system/[email protected]

to
/etc/systemd/system

and change this line
ExecStart=/usr/bin/wpa_supplicant -c/etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant-%I.conf -i%I

to
ExecStart=/usr/bin/wpa_supplicant -c/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf -i%I

because you'll probably use just that one config.
After that, enable wpa_supplicant service and the dhcpcd service like so
# systemctl enable wpa_supplicant@wlp3s0

# systemctl enable dhcpcd@wlp3s0

where wlp3s0 is my interface name, yours might be wlan0 for example, or something different.

You can always edit the config and restart the wpa_supplicant@<whatever> service as needed like so
# systemctl restart wpa_supplicant@wlp3s0

if you want to add a new network, for example.

>>
>>58696953
No, you need to use iw.
The command is
# iw dev wlp3s0 scan

but that will output a bunch of text in your terminal, so it would be better to pipe it to less if you need to see all the info
# iw dev wlp3s0 scan | less

or to grep SSID's if that's all that interests you
# iw dev wlp3s0 scan | grep SSID

Just replace wlp3s0 with the name of your interface.

I've run ~amd64 for a year and that has only happened a couple times (for some obscure forgotten ebuild that were fixed when I reported them). It's surprisingly stable. I guess it depends on your system too, eg. Plasma 5 might break more than Xfce which I run. Xfce basically doesn't get updates lmao

I do admit that there are occasional circular dependency problems etc. that Portage cries about but that's expected on ~amd64. They've been easy to fix :^)

I'd like to learn how to write GUI applications with Python and finally make a useful opensource app. I've googled a bunch of resources and it seems that the best way to do is is to learn GTK+.

Does anyone here actually make GUI Linux applications with Python? What do you use? How did you learn GTK+?

I'm wondering if there's any good resources to actually learn how to use GTK+ with Python... since I've come across a ton of man pages and API reference pages but none of them were beginner friendly.

Thanks!

Yeah, that's how I've been learning things for like a decade. I find it that it takes me way too long to get good at something and my knowledge is not that complete. I've come to prefer structured tutorials but those are impossible to find for (mostly) Linux-based technologies.

I'll probably resort to doing that but would like to avoid it so I don't waste too much time.

>Did the same to learn wxPython, which I find better tbqh

I haven't looked to deep into it because I don't use apt anymore, but I'm guessing you could use autoremove to list what it will remove first then review the list and exclude anything you still want before running it.

Just installed linux mint and i can watch videos on youtube on chromium, does this mean i have flash installed? I've heard you shouldn't install flash on linux is this true and why?
>>
How do I connect a Dualshock 3 to Ubuntu over bluetooth? It looks like this could once be done with a tool called qtsixa, but it hasn't been maintained for the past three years and doesn't seem to be compatible with the current version of ubuntu, or at least not able to be installed through apt.

Would it still be possible for me to install the program my compiling from source? I've never done that before but I'd be willing to give it a try.
>>
>>58698947
youtube still has html5 so even without flash you can watch it. I can't remember if mint comes with flash out of the box. You shouldn't have flash on any OS tbqh.
>>
>>58698967
but html5 is okay, why is flash bad, is this because of privacy?
>>
>>58698982
flash is very old and prone to security flaws.

I use oomox (AUR package) to make my own version of numix theme, and there is a "spacing" settings which seems to change that

Is there a list of programs/packages that actually benefit from compiling with -O3 meme optimization? I know Clear Linux enables it for a lot of packages, maybe there's a way to steal their configs?

So I installed the Ubuntu bash on windows 10 and discovered that I can use it to compile all kinds of code with native gnu/linux tools. Now I honestly don't see the point of using Linux on my desktop anymore because I'm a gayming faggot. No more needing to dual boot or run a VM if I want to program on my desktop. I find that pretty neat. Anybody else been using the bash on w10?

what flags/values did you use?
can the colors be made a bit less desaturated?
>>
>>58700276
what flags/values did you use?
ffmpeg -ss 0 -i nnfbyk.mp4 -map 0:v:0 -c:v libvpx -pix_fmt yuv420p -auto-alt-ref 1 -lag-in-frames 25 -threads $(nproc) -slices 1 -deadline best -cpu-used 0 -g 7200 -qmin 5 -qmax 18 -fs 3M -y a.webm

(note: i usually use -deadline good and -cpu-used 1, which are faster at the cost of a little less quality, changed in this instance as it was a quality-focused test)

>can the colors be made a bit less desaturated?
if you're talking about the small color text, no, this is a result of using subsampled color (yuv420). i believe only vp9 supports yuv444, which avoids color subsampling

I'm new to GNU/Linux and I've been toying around with the way permissions work.

I'm curious as to the point of the chmod set up, why is there an option for world? What the point of leaving them only to read/execute, or read only. Why is it frowned upon to not leave full access for the world along with user and group? Is it ever okay?
>>
>>58700405
thanks for the info, I don't know much about this stuff
>>
>>58700443
security in general is all about "minimum access", that is, ideally you want things to be configured such that users and programs can only access things they should be able to access, nothing more

Anyone know why releasing keys has a delay on Ubuntu? 'Slow keys' isn't on.

When I press a key it stays on for a time after I've released it. For example if I use caps lock to type the first letter of a word, it'll still be on for long enough to caps the second letter (e.g. EXample). Also means that if I'm gaymen and I press alt to do something, then tab to check keyboard, it'll alt tab and minimize the game. Really fucking annoying.

I'm using a PS2 keyboard if it matters, and I don't have this problem on Windows.

np, the reason color subsampling is a thing stems from a combination of the softness of most video sources, and the fact that human vision is much less sensitive to color resolution than luminosity resolution
so most video is stored with chroma (colour) at a quarter the resolution of luma (luminosity)

your artificial video source contains maximum frequency color information (color text which is only 1 pixel wide in either dimention), so this gets blurred/blended with surrounding pixels, which are dark, so the colours appear to be dulled

It's basically Elementary OS without many packages (and only three package maintainers lmao)

Budgie DE is a horrible hack on top of Gnome shit and eopkg is a mediocre package manager. But atleast they've got a customized Steam runtime... "yay"!
