Yea Ive tried it.
Played some stuff like Fallout 4 and some free rift games. Its..well...its ok.
Its not as awesome as you might think it is, especially because you need a long time to set all this shit up and get it going. I guess to try out the VR experience its good but dont rely on that stuff to actually play hundreds of hours with it.
Also VR porn is quite comfy with the plastic Cardboard clones. The pornhub app even has a vr mode

I tried Trinus on Skyrim. I then got myself a proper HMD.

Well, obviously it isn't the same, the 3D is there and the rotation tracking works, but I didn't find it practical at all, it only works with games that haven't been designed for VR. I wouldn't recommend getting a holder if you're even just considering getting a Vive or a Rift.

If you do, get compound, it's a good free game

I did, and I don't recommend you these chink cardboard. Honestly, the only headsets that provide an immersive experience are the samsung gear VR and the homido. Maybe daydream is good but I haven't tested it.
Forget headset like VRBox 2 because they're trash in immersion and could disgust you.

Do you know of any good guides? I've got a gear VR and an S7 but haven't done much gaming on it since the apps I've looked at to do it have been so shitty.

cardboard vr will never ever be even close to proper Rift. It's still worth it though, especially since you already have a smartphone so it costs something around a dollar.

Try Riftcat, this one is nice out of the box thing. I used Freetrack+tridef3d+moonlight combo and it was quite alright, except for the moments when camera was losing sight of ir diodes and everything was turning around in my view. Still, not even remotely close to Rift DK2which i also used.

I did this with a Homido. It was terrible, but I was using a Samsung Galaxy S2 with a cracked as fuck screen, so probably with a decent phone it would be okay.

I tried the DK2 and the gearVR, didn't like either specially the DK2 since the 1080p screen still had a lot of that screendoor effect

I was planning on using a phone or tablet with a 2K screen to avoid that, and as for the gameplay just WASD since I don't care for the waggle crap DESU

Get a good heatmount like Gear VR and mount a 2k 7" HDMI display in it, way better than your shit.
That's what I did, obviously you won't have tracking, but the games I play don't do tracking well anyways.

Holders like the one I mentioned are less than $20, chump change compared to an actual VR headset

And I plan to use it with non-VR games anyway........because there are hardly any worth a damn
