It would change nothing if Windows was open source. We already know it's poorly engineered by indians.

To have any impact whatsoever it needs to be libre. That would force Adobe and other greedy shits to publish their source code but that would also pretty much mean the end of their reign unless they manage to totally change their business model.

It cannot happen because too much money relies on it, but we don't really care if Windows is open source, we just want all the good bits that are made for Windows to be available for Linux. What Linux mostly needs is access to microshit APIs, if the circle is broken then Linux would become easily the largest share OS on computers.

The thing about open source versus closed source is that with open source there are constantly eyes pouring over it all the time making sure it is safe, whereas with closed source only certain people are allowed to see it.

So for example there could be code in windows which has really offensive commends or offensive variable names.

Or for example there may be bugs which were not noticeable by the small number of windows devs but compared to the large amount of people on the internet it would be picked up instantly.

So windows may become open source but they will have to slowly open source one component at a time.

That being said I will be very proud of microsoft if they become open source.

This line of reasoning has been proved incorrect time and time again. Just because it's open and available for anybody to look at, does not mean that are a large amount of qualified people activiely auditing the code. A good example of this is OpenSSL and heart bleed. Another example is shell shock and bash.

Lots of precompiled binaries ship with the source, but the FOSS community will likely jump at the opportunity to clean it up and optimize it.

I'd rather use a shitty "emulator" to run a few games than run a Linux "emulator" (cygwin/bash on windows) on top of a trash operating system for all of the stuff I do as a job.

I could run a lot of games pretty well.
the STALKER games ran pretty well.
Hitman: Blood Money runs better than it does on Windows 7, since it has a crash bug on 7.
GTA4 worked pretty well through Wine until rockstar updated it 3 months ago, which broke it for my on all platforms.
Sim City 4 ran about as well as it did on Windows 7
Fallout: New Vegas ran about as well as it did on Windows
Sim City 2000 works well, apart from missing MIDI, which is a lot better than Windows


The selection of games I've tried is mostly old because nothing good has come out in the last few years.

Microsoft doesn't have the source code to part of the NT kernel, they lost that shit. Everything after XP is built on top of each underlying layer, and there is that ex-windows dev image (discussed earlier in thread) saying how only one old PERL script can even compile Windows and that MS has tried 4-5 times to set up a new way to compile it, and it never works.

Back when I was a web dev intern, I got several tickets to fix that were literally just features Microsoft had added into Internet Explorer.
