I keep meaning to move my shit to some NAS using ZFS instead of being crazy and hosting everything on my desktop machine. The lack of being in at least raid5 worries me and I really like the integrity features of other filesystems. Maybe I'll do it when I move from 2TB drives to 4, which seems soon with the prices right now and my free space being gone.

I was looking into ReFS a while ago but it seems like support outside of Windows Server is unstable and the feature set isn't that great anyway compared to other solutions, not to mention other systems are mature and tested at this point too. The T: drive in my image is a 1TB external formatted to ReFS but it doesn't even display in the Windows 10(1607) explorer.

StableBit DrivePool with FlexRAID RAID-F taking snapshots every night so losing a drive won't lose any data.

Since this is a storage thread, I might as well ask on your backup solutions and general storage setups.
I'm thinking of making a little NAS that doubles as a small server with a RAIDz2 array of six 4TB drives and an SSD for booting. That's fine and all, but how would I backup such an array? My current setup is like a pseudo RAID1 since all I do is copy the files periodically with rsync. On the decently sized array, would I just backup portions and let it sit outside the array, i.e. function as cold storage? Also, what about tape? Is it still expensive as fuck or is it recommended to just grab used tape drives?

Yeah on a Windows Server 2012 box (free student licence). To be honest I could just run Linux but the server used to run a Windows-only service too so I've just left it alone.

Just one parity drive. Haven't had a single drive failure since I put the server together.

So I bought my first external HDD. I'm going to use it on a windows machine so should I format to NTFS? Also should I use Veracrypt to encrypt it?
>>
>>58694241
format it exFAT
If you put a veracrypt container on it, that can be NTFS
You'll save space over have a NTFS container inside a NTFS partition.
>>
>>58694185
Everything actually important is backed up, the rest is mostly DVD/BD rips. If I get an email notification of a failed drive, I'll find which one it is. If it's a small one I'll just restore the data to a larger drive. If it's a big one, I'll shut it down and buy a replacement with next-day delivery.
