If you're a developer or aspiring:
>Linux is *nix, Windows is not. Enough said.

If you're a normie:
>Linux is faster
>Linux has less viruses
>Linux has package managers (inb4 Windows has them as well; they're awful)
>Linux is extremely customizable. There is a plethora of working DE's you can choose from and 99% of the handsome OS screenshots that you see on the net are Linux boxes. On Windows, you don't like the whole Metro shit? Fuck you, we do like it, so suck it up.

It isn't. If anything it's slower due to lack of drivers or shitty implementations. Windows does everything possible to make crap hardware feel faster than it really is, Linux is much more simplistic and doesn't bother.

Windows sucks due to the lack of trust in everything you install.

In Linux, if I want to format ANYTHING to ANYTHING from ANYTHING or just delete ANYTHING, I can use gparted. It's free, trustworthy and isn't going to load my system up with bullshit. This goes for SD cards to hard drives, to SSD's to flash drives.

In Windows I need a separate program to deal with those sorts of partitions, not to mention the lack of support for filesystems that aren't fat32 or NTFS entirely.

This doesn't just go for gparted. Virtual camera software and hotkey management are also covered here. They all have to be third-party programs from closed-source devs that throw malware into everything they code.

Fuck it completely.

It's free and everything that derives from this fact is a reason to use it. You can't be fully satisfied with non-free OS because it's made in a way to be liked by as many people as possible, can't be perfect for each user. Any part of GNU os can be chosen from at least 3 variants (you can even run it with bsd kernel instead of linux), you are free to assemble system that is perfect for you and compute in your own style without getting annoyed of something you don't like in windows or osx.

GPU passthrough (more generally PCI passthrough) is a technology allowing you to run a Windows VM inside a Linux host and give it it's own dedicated physical GPU. You need two GPUs and a willingness for pain though.

In my experience it creates a significant drop in performance and causes a number of totally undiagnosable bugs (games not launching, games running at 1 FPS, etc.) but other people swear by it.

1. The scheduler is worse.
I have 4 cores on my laptop.
Running a single core application means I use 25% CPU.
On windows, running a single core application means I use 16%.

2. The system is harder to change.
This means most people stick with the default environment which uses more resources than kde, yet offers fewer features than mate.

3. Windows doesn't handle software.
This means every application needs to phone home to check for updates and the updates windows do handle is poorly implemented, so you spend a lot of resources doing updates, not to mention how much time you spend shutting windows down and starting up due to this.
And the new versions where you have to ask for permission to use the computer, stuff like that waste time.

Now gnu/linux also waste time, but in different ways.
You have to find (alternative) applications, test out drivers and if you are the only one in the field, you are going to have a bad time.
Most of linux users are in a field where they have all the applications they need and then they don't deal with those things.

I don't know if these things doesn't impact windows users or they just don't know better, but there is too many windows users to make generalizations like that.

Puppet master no. Virtual machines are much more boring kid.

Also, botnet does not benefit you at all. You can't ddos anything when your part of the botnet. Your computer is part of a big network that you can't control and you are at the mercy of Microsoft. They do whatever they want. Let me emphasise, **botnet is not cool**. Avoid botnet like the plague. Linux is not botnet, for the most part. /g/ says Ubuntu is full botnet, it's mostly commercialized and collects data Amazon would want(everything).

I don't know much about UK. I dislike my country for reasons. Basically 20 years of bad governments and then EU on top of that.. I'm trying to get my friend to consider moving there too, we could split the initial costs.

He leaked information about British spy agencies intercepting data all over the world.
He leaked information about the US spying on several other nations.
He leaked information about a NSA hacker team.
Among many other things.
I didn't post any source because its common knowledge and you could literally google it in a handful of seconds.

But listen, my dudes. I'm not saying what he did was wrong. From the point of view of the population ( including myself, even though I'm not an americlap ), what he did was obviously heroic.
But on the other hand, he worked at a spy agency and decided do leak information that would compromise several operations and did actually put agents lives at risk.
He could leak about the NSA spying on US citizens and be a hero and thats it. But be also leaked information about the NSA and other agencies spying on numerous world leaders and foreign governments.
Those foreign governments aren't all of them friendly or reasonable and they have intelligence agencies of their own. They will investigate how the NSA was taking that information and would eventually find an agent ( someone with access to said information that had an agreement with some agency ) because information like that isn't captured by foreign agencies without someone with access to it purposely giving it away.
Remember how some news agencies decided not to name Afghanistan among the countries that the US was spying upon, in fears that it would trigger violent responses? And then Wikileaks named them anyways?

...

We live in the internet era and spying is something normal. It is a form of warfare like any other.
Having information about stuff happening in other countries allows your country to prepare for it beforehand and in turn it makes your ass a little bit more secure.
Spying in their own population as if that population was an enemy is a huge problem. But it also has to do with how a huge number of people migrate to the united states every year from countries all around the world. Including a lot of people from cultures that have highly negative views about the US and its citizens.
Terrorist don't justify spying on the general population, that's bad and it could lead to even worse situations. We need different ways of dealing with that kind of thing but that's something we have yet to figure out.

When has this ever happened, at any time in a government's history, ever in it's lifetime?

Also, Snowden wasn't the only one who spoke out against the NSA. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Binney_%28U.S._intelligence_official%29

None of those things have benefited from an increase in privacy invasion of American citizens.

super convenient. No need to go find an installer and avoid getting some PuPs.

>hard to get viruses
Security on Linux is better than Windows and there are few Linux viruses in the wild.

>better GUI
KDE, XFCE and Cinnamon all have a modular menu system that acts similar to windows, but allow a lot more customization.

>everything is configurable
There are a lot of things in Windows that you just can't change, like forced updates that restart the computer. It's really nice to be able to fix any issue like that.

You can also make sure everything you have is free, so that you can fuck with anything without any legal consequences.

>few normies
Most of the Linux community (outside of the people who use Ubuntu, Android or chromebooks) are actually knowledgeable about what they're using.

>no product activation bullshit
Having to crack all of my software or deal with licensing bullshit is not something I ever want to deal with. If I blow something up and need to reinstall, I don't have to worry about the activation server randomly rejecting my key, like Windows does.

What about the Pro's? They probably can't compete with Windows because of the games but they could try competing with the Mac.
Linux needs to get Adobe CC, Microsoft Office and the rest of the software will come, but not being able to get Mac apps like Logic Pro and Final Cut might be a problem.
>>
>>58683675
You can run most versions of Microsoft office through Wine or through a VM if you really need them.

Microsoft Office is the kind of software you should be trying to get away from though. Documents aren't even compatible between different versions of office, things always break.

The fact that all of this is non-free software means that a large portion of the Linux community will not use it. This is especially true of Microsoft office because LibreOffice is pretty good and Latex is superior to a word processor anyway.
>>
>>58683892
Wine and VM are not options for normal tech illiterate users.
I'm a Mac user and use Pages from Apple instead of Microsoft Office because it's good enough for what i need and it comes free with macOS.

Linux needs to have options, because most people prefer Microsoft Office, especially business people, so i think it's essential for Linux to have it if they want to grow.

Wine is an option for the average user. You just install Wine, then you try running it. if it doesn't run, give up.

Back when I had no idea what I was doing and though that Ubuntu with Unity was the best distro for beginners (fuck unity), I was able to do that.

Pros:
- freedom
- privacy
- customizability
- variety and choice
- better UI/UX and workflows
- package managers with sane update policies
- sane dev environments
- sane shells
- SSH / SFTP / SSHFS
- unlimited possibilities thanks to open source software
- you'll learn more about your computer
- (mostly) friendly community interested in technology
- can use WINE to run most applications/games

Cons:
- not all AAA games are available or playable through WINE
- no adobe software (PS6 is working, not that well though)

Workarounds:
- can use a Windows/MacOS virtual machine with GPU passthrough yielding 99%+ performance
>>
>>58684615

>can use WINE to run most applications/games
I don't think WINE is able to run most games well. There are plenty that run, but a lot get CPU bottlenecked and run at 30 FPS.

WINE works impressively with games, but it's not good enough to replace Windows yet, if you're a gamer.
>>
>>58684615
Isn't GPU passthrough experimental technology? You need to do some things that put your computer into a potentially unreliable state to get it working.
>>
>>58684784
It's not like it crashes the host Linux OS, or damages the installation, if you have a hardware incompatibility or something. It just doesn't work.

You have to blacklist the video card you're passing through so Linux doesn't grab it on boot, which means you can't use it in Linux. But if you can't get passthrough working you can just undo that and reboot.
