I can only imagine leaving my computer on for 12 hours a day when I'm not using will shorten its life span. Hell that's 4,380 hours a year that something is rotating upwards of a billion times a second for absolutely no reason. Why take that risk?

Seems to me like you don't know how to use a computer.

if what i was told is accurate, W8 and beyond doesn't even provide a shut down option- even what it claims shut the PC down only puts it in sleep.

so...

actually its the complete opposite dude

leaving shit on 24/7 makes it last longer. Caps dry out and the hard on/off is what shortens the machine life.

i have a first gen i7 and its getting a bit ricketty, I cant win. I either turn the machine off to conserve electricity and money or leave it on and not stress the old machine.
>>
>>58671084
it doesn't work like that, hibernation and shut down are still different things
>>
>>58670826
I only use Intel/Nvidia which is endothermic at idle and makes my room cooler at night AYYMD BTFO.

you mean W8, W8.1, and W10 distinctions for hibernation and shut down?

either way, it made sense to me since W8 seemed to boot so quickly when I used it after it dropped

>>
>>58670826
Not only do I shut it down every single night, I flick the switch on the PSU so that no power gets to it.
I have a UPS, but if the power goes out it'll just mean the battery will drain faster. Besides, I can torrent shit while I work.

Wrong.
Cold start ups are what greatly shortens the lifespan.

I only shut my desktop down like once a month, and that's usually just for critical updates.
>>
>>58672443
>wasting.
That's why you always have your computer doing some automated task, so it's not wasted.

I usually have a bunch of downloads or random long term maintenance tools running.

op by the your computer lifespan dies from cold startups it would already have been obsolete. worst thing that can happen is that you would need to replace the psu

>>
>>58675198
Clearly coming from someone who's never had to pay one. Electricity isn't even particularly expensive where I live, but it still makes an impact. I can only imagine what it must be like somewhere like commiefornia.
The 2 devices with the biggest power draw in my home are my refrigerator and my computer. One of them can be reasonably shut off to save power, one can't.

I've definitely seen that video (I usually listen to Scishow or Crash Course as background noise when I sleep) but I can't confirm that it was that exact one.

sci show does make some quality content with above average percentage of correct facts even off the bleeding edge of new research

Is Scishow space any good? I never really got into much space stuff besides watching the crash course on astronomy.

Actually, multiple times a day. Boot time is (very) short, so I just turn of my PC if I'm not using it for the next 15mins or so.
>>
>>58675955
That's actually wasting power instead of saving it.
>>
>>58670826

Letting the botnet collect your info 24/7.

: ^ )
>>

>>
>>58670888
Back in the 90s when I first started learning about computers, it was explained to me that booting and shut down is a lot rougher on a system than leaving it running full time. That's been the general consensus I've heard over and over ever since then too.

I will say that from personal experience, I've had a number of PSUs die--capacitors blowing--and it's always been during startup/reboot, and never while the system was running. I know that's anecdotal evidence, and doesn't mean much to anyone else, but it does lead me to think that the conventional wisdom is at least somewhat correct.

1.Unlike windows, you don't need to wait an hour for your computer to be usable when booting linux.
2.Boots in seconds.
3.On off cycles don't hurt computers like it's 1999.
