I can only imagine leaving my computer on for 12 hours a day when I'm not using will shorten its life span. Hell that's 4,380 hours a year that something is rotating upwards of a billion times a second for absolutely no reason. Why take that risk?

Back in the 90s when I first started learning about computers, it was explained to me that booting and shut down is a lot rougher on a system than leaving it running full time. That's been the general consensus I've heard over and over ever since then too.

I will say that from personal experience, I've had a number of PSUs die--capacitors blowing--and it's always been during startup/reboot, and never while the system was running. I know that's anecdotal evidence, and doesn't mean much to anyone else, but it does lead me to think that the conventional wisdom is at least somewhat correct.
