Hi there!
You seem to have made a mistake in your post. Luckily, the users of 4chan are always willing to help you clear this problem right up! You appear to have used a name when posting, but your identity has nothing at all to do with the conversation! Whoops! You should always remember to stop using your name when the thread it was used for is gone, unless another one is started! Posting with a name when it isn't necessary is poor form. You should always try to post anonymously, unless your identity is absolutely vital to the post that you're making!

Now, there's no need to thank me, I'm just doing my bit to help you get used to the anonymous imageboard culture!

I am probably going to install Ubuntu on my Windows 10 laptop fairly soon. I don't know why I have waited so long. I used Ubuntu on my old laptop for a couple years before getting this one, it shipped with Windows 10. It is a gaming laptop though and Windows is the "best" for gaming, as almost all games are made for Windows before consideration for full compatibility with other operating systems. Games are a waste of my time now though, too busy with research. What Linux distribution would you recommend? My first pick is Ubuntu simply because I have familiarity with Debian/Ubuntu.

Xubutu or Ubuntu MATE.
If you prefer Unity then, install the normal Ubuntu. I like Xubuntu and Ubuntu MATE because literally all I need is the menu bar/taskbar and having a low resolution with a bar on the left (I know you can hide it) and one on the top makes the open windows with huge title padding (like on gnome) feel even smaller and I have to scroll a lot more to a point where I can't see the like/dislike button on YouTube. Anyway, having a lot of space and a high resolution makes doing whatever you are doing much more enjoyable. I think the reason programmers use vertical/1:1 monitors is because of the screen real state.

It's an on demand window. It's not always open, you spend less clicks opening and closing it and you certainly don't need to drag and drop anything(if you miss the button when you drop the image browser opens it instead. Is that your idea of convenience?) Also, in Windows file picker can do everything the regular Explorer can, most importantly searching(it even supports boolean operations and grouping) and file operations. Having no image thumbnails(or having to select image first to preview it) is simply unacceptable. Not just in 2017 - ever.

>>
Good. If they're going to use a new design language, at least do it everywhere. I hate that the context menus aren't consistent throughout the OS, but if they'll update in order to make it consistent then I'm all for it. Just wish they'd be able to do it from the get go.

Shame there's no tabs though. Wish Microsoft realized a lot of people want this and it makes a ton of sense from a UX point of view.

How the fuck does that make it useless when you
1) click anywhere after the end of the directory tree to show the full path
2) click any directory in the tree to jump to that directory

It's absolutely fucking better and your opinion is shit. Just enable the full path in the title bar if you are that butthurt about not being able to see it all the time.

Is that shit in your image supposed to replace it or something?
>>
>>58668961
I could see this being okay for a touch based system but for a desktop/laptop I don't see how anyone could see this as an acceptable file manager.

Microsoft needs to let the Metro design fucking die. The only application they managed to make decently with it is Scan, they've ruined everything else. I ended up killing Photos after they took it from being just okay to a pile of shit in the Anniversary update.

Quick, someone work out what we have to do to save Windows Explorer. It isn't the best file manager but it is the best we've got.

yes, windows 8 was literally the biggest decline in windows OS's for years. it literally eclipsed vista and 2K for how shitty it went. all the problems from windows 8 follows all the newer releases because they think if they force this harder on people, people will just accept it. no one wants tile based shit unless they are using a touchscreen, and even then most of them want the ability to know what the tile opens up.

8.1 is better.

File manager on Windows 8.1 has the ribbon that everyone hates, but has plenty of functions. I hate when I have to quickly switch between hiding and showing files or extensions on Windows 7. On 8.1 that's quick, and 10 too. Problem comes with this new abomination.

No tabbed windows - lots of custom shells have it

Huge context menus that will probably look awful once you install more programs.

Usually metro UI has lots of animations by default, which makes an explorer shell too slow. Normally explorer shells are snappy, fast, instant-fast. You could disable animations but that's not a good solution, and you can't do it per app.

Lack of features. It actually looks poorer in features than the current shell.

All this change just for the sake of design?

Ffs, just take a look at other OSes, their explorer shells have more features and are more polished. Why strip it all down to very basic features and metro UI?

The explorer should have its own UI, close to metro, but more focused on allowing complex features for proper file management.

Also no native support for previews, like in macOS, in 2017... Seriously, wtf.

There are THIRD PARTY apps that can do this. Why can't Microsoft add native support for file preview on a key press?
>>
>We have less functions than XFCE now

>All this change just for the sake of design?
For the sake of touch input. This is the Explorer I've been using on W10M. And using this explorer on tablets is a lot more useful than the old version. This is also way more modular and easy to update than the old version.
>>
>>58678201
Yes, this is obviously better for touch devices, but it's too simplified for desktop.

Who would use this in a business environment where you need more features? What about admins?

Do we have to mess around with third party shells just to be able to have proper file management features in the explorer?

They should have an option to switch to tablet/phone mode and keep more features on the desktop.

>Soon they will remove the ability to use local accounts for Windows 10, I guarantee it

Your windows 10 account is the same as your online account. You need an outlook user as an account.

Or else Windows 10 can't be considered a "microsoft service" (because of how they define it) and lots of their spyware would not be legal.

Do you have to enable botnet policies to have access to preview builds? It could be because I disabled and blocked every IP from Microsoft.

I can still get manual updates though, so not sure if that's the cause.

Tried all sorts of suggestions I found on a quick search.

I CBA to rollback every policy I've set to block updates and telemetry though.

So if that's the price of getting preview builds, I'd rather not.

Vulnerabilities such as a single 5 year old file containing bitmaps made by a random guy on deviantArt somehow having a well crafted exploit that has remained hidden all these years invisible to all 200 heuristic malware detectors out there, containing a sequence of complex memory pointers that can be triggered with an instruction from the NSA headquarters that attaches my computer to a botnet.

>>
>>58684234
It's not even that, you're ALREADY using a theme. Windows has to load either Aero or Classic or whatever theme is used by default. You can't just "not use a theme". All a custom one does is swap a few bitmaps around. It's like saying that opening a 200x200 JPG in your image editor has "worse performance" than opening a different 200x200 JPG image.

I mean it's technically correct in that if the image contains more data it will take more time to render it, but even that is on the order of less than a millisecond, can be FASTER if the theme you use is simpler than the default Microsoft one, and in either case only happens once when it's loaded into memory when you log in. If you care at all about performance, start by disabling one of the dozens of automatic services running in the background.
