Has anyone ever swapped the batteries in their laptop with new 18650s? The battery life in my thinkpad is complete ass and a new pack is very expensive. I'm thinking about swapping out the cells manually.
Thoughts?

did someone say explosion?

You need a very good soldering iron, or a way to weld the terminals. Other than that it shouldn't be hard.
OP will die in a chemical fire.

Make sure the vent holes all align, or you will die in a fire.

Some protection circuits will shut off permanently if they aren't constantly powered. Also get batteries with solder tabs already attached.

This.
I've never replaced completely all of the cells in a pack, but I've added additional cells to get more battery time, and replaced dead ones. To be sure you don't brick the circuit, use jumper cables to mantain the voltage during the operation. And If you can't get batteries with solder tabs, I've had success using sandpaper and flux and soldering a cable, but do this at your own risk because heat+lithium = explosions.
