I disagree. They weren't as numerous relative to the overall userbase back then, it was mostly a very small portion of the site and a lot of the most vocal ones were offsite shills. I don't think containment boards work that well for everything. In the case of /pol/, and this is just my theory, the original chan users simply grew into their mid 20s to low 30s and started caring more about politics or news while the gradual userbase increment drew in enough normies who also cared about that asinine stuff to the point it exploded kinda like /sp/. The US elections and Syria shit also instigated a lot of this, I feel.
