IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

I was using X30 and t42 and i like them a lot. Planning to buy something newer and so far T420 is the only option? I want something smaller. X30 is small but the screen is huge. God machine, really. Is there something similar?
>>
So, besides the keyboard, is there anything else the x230 does different/worse than the x220?

I'm trying to decide between the x220,x230, EliteBook 2570p and latitude E6230/E6330.
>>
I want to quadcore my x230. I am not scared of BGA rework. I will post pics of the process when it happens. Will an i7 3612qe require BIOS modification or thermal management considerations?

I am 100% serious.

I don't really, of the three I like the general looks of the thinkpads the least. I have a thing for metal.

Why the elitebook over the latitudes though? I've heard they're quite a bit heavier and have worse screens.

I have an i5 2230m, but I've heard from a few people that the i7s installed in the x230 didn't offer much advantage in practice. My goal to see if a quad core i7 offers considerable improvement, but I'm not an expert in processors or compatibility.
>>
>>58648564
X61/X61s are the last ones with the same godlike form factor as X30. You can also get the chink X62 with modern innards if you dont mind the cost.

I recently purchased an X220 which is running Windows 7 and has all the Lenovo crap still installed. I noticed that when I close the laptop it makes a beeping sound every couple of minutes if I don't mute it.
I only just noticed this time as I was watching a stream that after beeping it turned back on completely.
My main guess is that it's caused by the stuff Lenovo added but have no idea what setting it could be.

it's not a T430, it's a T61 most likely, those indicator lights were dropped with the T410, so was that button design for the trackpoint, audio jacks are in the place where they would be on a T61, hinge sizes are also correct, IEEE 1394 also in the right place, trackpad is the same as the T61, which is primarily why i'd say it's not a T400

Trying to decide on a Samsung EVO or Samsung PRO SSD for my x230t. Someone told me that the x230t will bottleneck even the cheapest SSDs out today and it's not worth putting a PRO in there. Is this true?
>>
>>58651159
>Is it really bad and/or noticible?
Not that bad unless you're using it to watch anime or gaymen. They are awesome machines for the price and still look good today.
>>
>>58651241
Well it's using SATA 3. That would mean a maximum of 3Gbit/s. Compare that to your SSD's read and write speed.
>>
>>58651241
I'm pretty sure the X230(t) supports SATA 3, i.e. 6 Gbps, however if you go mSATA then you may struggle, at least the xx20 series only supported SATA 2 (3 Gbps) in the mSATA slot

Are there any PCIe devices I could put into my X220 besides UMTS and SSD? I have one empty slot but I need neither of them. Got my HDD replaced with an SSD and I don't want mobile networking. Anything else I could use the slot for?
>>
>>58651344
6 Gbps would give a theoretical max of 750 MBps, but that's very fast.
>>
>>58651393
in praxis it's 600MB/s

I had the i7 in an x220, and now have the i7 in an x230, I can say that there's less heat and it is noticeably less power hungry, but in terms of performance I imagine its the standard ~10% effective increase though.

Main plus points are resistance to temp. throttling and HD3000 -> HD4000 (which is capable of playing modern games.)

Is there any reason to get a t420 over an x220? They're virtually the same spec-wise, and the x220 is more compact.
>>
>>58658636
You can't easily replace the cpu in the x220 if it matters to you.
>>
>>58658636
t420 could have a potentially higher resolution display(no mods). t420 also tends to run cooler so you're less likely to run into thermal throttling if you're doing something cpu intensive. x220 doesn't have an optical drive slot not a big deal since disk don't really matter anymore, but you can shove a hard drive in there. So potentially a t420 could have 2 2.5" drives installed.

Just some sacrifices you make for a smaller form factor. imo though X22/30>T42/30
>>
Is it worth spending a bit more to get a W520 instead of a T520? The extra GPU performance seems nice but that son of a bitch is gonna run much hotter isn't it.
>>
>>58659461

Just from my experience it's much harder to find a t520 with an fhd screen, while there's many w520 with them, just as a note. However, how much do you really need a quadro? They aren't really that strong, but are good at wasting battery life and getting hot. I'd say the most relevant reason to go for a w520 would be for the quad core cpu. For the record though, I own a w520 and it used to be my daily driver. The fhd screen is great even though it's a tn panel probably the best out of the 2012 thinkpad line up, battery life isn't that bad but it's definitely worse than my x230. Overall though, I switched to an x230 because I didn't need to utilize a quadcore anymore and definitely didn't need the quadro.

I already have the revered wide gamut 1080p display for the *520 in the mail so that's not a problem. Just can't decide which thinkpad I want to actually buy to put it in.

I guess you're right though, the Quadro will probably go as a mostly unused heat generator as I don't really play games... T520 it is I think.

>>58659461
W520 has Optimus so you can run on integrated graphics while on battery. But being a quad core, it will be hotter anyway, just hotter yet with the discrete graphics running too. That's what having a somewhat sizeable heatsink is for I guess. Still, the option does mean it gets considerably more battery life than the W510, however more power hungry it is compared to the T

X220 vs X230

X230 pros:
>2x USB3 on all models (X220 has 1 on select models)
>CPU consumes less power and outputs less heat
>GPU is over 50% more performant
>GPU supports OpenGL 4.0 (3.3 on X220)
>Mini DP -> HDMI adapter is more common than DP -> HDMI
>backlit keyboard available
>no bios mod needed for stable eGPU experience

X220 pros:
>classic keyboard by default
>3rd party batteries work by default
>cheaper

X230 requires custom EC BIOS to support classic keyboard and 3rd party batteries.

Personally I've had X40, X61s, X201, X220 and X230 as my daily laptop and I have to say that X40 and X61s had the best keyboard in both typing feel and layout. The keyboards on my X201 and X220 had too soft collapse for my taste and I would sometimes mix up two consecutive letters from different hands while touch typing. X230 has objectively worse layout but the typing feel is back to amazing so I'm not going to mod X220 keyboard onto my X230.

In the end it's all about what you need and what kind of a deal you can find. X230 + X220 keyboard + modding is much more expensive in time and money than just picking up X220 if it's all about the keyboard.
>>
>>58661902
I've got a X220 at the moment with a TN screen and have been thinking about getting a X230 with an ips screen. Then swapping the keyboards round. Worth it?
>>
>>58662738
I didn't as I preferred the X230 keyboard feel over the one on my X220. I don't know if there is a modded EC for the X220 to put the new keyboard on it.

Don't get me wrong I prefer the keyboard on X61s but it is sadly obsolete. The keyboards on X201 and X220 which I had were clearly of lower quality in term of typing comfort.

I was super sceptical of the new keyboard on X230 but it won me over easily as it was more comfourtable to type on even if the layout is worse.

I've read that there are multiple manufacturers for the X220 keyboard and that some of them are better but the one I had had too soft collapse making typing experience medicore compared to X61s or X230.

I mean it's subjective, most users here on /tpg/ don't like the new keyboard layout or new chasis, but imo they aren't bad. Tbh the biggest thing is that new Thinkpads are quite expensive and only offer marginal upgrades to Thinkpads made in 2012/3. Why send close to a grand or more when you can spend $200-$300 on an older Thinkpad with an ssd and still be able to perform the same tasks at about the same performance. I'd say the only real noticeable diffrences are newer Thinkpads are more energy efficient and are also thinner.

all the cheap off-brand batteries will be about the same, that is to say, not amazing. a $20 chinese 6-cell will have a lower capacity than a legit lenovo one and probably a lower overall cycle life as well.

BUT how much more money do you really want to put into an x201? a legit battery is gonna be up there, and who knows how long it's been sitting on a shelf, even advertised as new? how many hours are you really going to be farting around outside on your laptop (WHICH HAS A TN SCREEN. SUNLIGHT TN SUNLIGHT TN STOMP MY NUTS TN SUNLIGHT), away from an outlet?

I recently picked up two Thinkpads (a T440p and a W541) and both of them have problems with the color on the webcam. One, everything is tinted yellow, and the other everything is tinted pink. How can Lenovo think that's acceptable?

Are the xx30 thinkpad keyboards made by multiple manufacturers like the xx20 ones are? If so which model number do I need to be on the lookout for to get the best keyboard feel?
>>
>>58670637
Yes. There are matte and gloss keyboards out there. They are not the same. Don't know what they did or even if they have different FRUs.

x220 keyboards are more consistent overall.

don't know how much used T460's are going for but randomly stumbled upon this, might be interesting for someone

would've considered it myself but not an amerifat so the shipping + import charges kill it for me
>>
So do they replace the battery when they refurbish pcs? I don't care about cosmetic damage but I would imagine an older thinkpad could use a new battery. If they replace it it would make me more likely to buy refurbished rather than new.

Also, does anyone know what kind of battery life a used i5 x230t gets these days?
>>
>>58670124
a 20$ chinese 6-cell would be a vast improvement over less than an hour uptime without a charger though. And that is literally just editing ruby in vim. my battery has 20.1% capacity, so it is basically worthless. Even if the chinese one has just 70% capacity that would be worth the 20$. So, any cheap chink batteries for an x201 /tpg/ recommends?
>>
>>58670752

rather than used I mean.

Is Windows 10 or Linux better for battery life?
>>
>>58670919
Neither install macos
>>
>>58670919

In my experience windows (8.1 because I'm a freak who likes metro) has been better for battery life on my laptops.
>>
>>58670957
I always thought Linux was a more modern, modular, lightweight OS than Windows which I've always imagined as a junk legacy code-encumbered pile of taped together dinosaur crap.

Interesting that Windows is actually better for battery.

TN (Twisted Nematic) is the most common technology and also the oldest. The main advantage is that it provides the shortest response times, making them good for gaming. In combination with LED back-lighting, TN monitors also offer high brightness and draw less power than competing technologies. Another important factor is that they are cheap to manufacture, resulting in low prices for end users.

The drawbacks to the technology is the color shifts that occur at wider viewing angles. There are large differences in quality between different products, but the lower-end ones will exhibit color shift even at moderate angle changes. A TN-based display can usually be identified through these color distortions when viewing the picture from above or from the sides.

There are 2 versions, but non-multitouch has anti-reflective coating.
