I just set up a linux build in VirtualBox, allocated 20 gb to it. Later realized it wasn't the build I was looking for and deleted it. But my computer is still showing 20 gb less than normal, and I'm wondering how the fuck I can get it back now. I'm not seeing any separate partitions in the disk manager, so where did I fuck up here?
>>
>>58644712
So i rooted my phone, what's some /g/ recommended stuff to do to it now?
>>
>>58644961
Are you saying that your main linux partition has shrunk, or that more space than usual seems to have been taken up?
>>
>>58644969
Nah, so I'm running a Windows OS. I had Linux running in VirtualBox, allocated 20 gb to its memory, then shortly after screwing around with it and realizing it was the wrong build, deleted the machine. But it looks like my hard drive is still 20 gigs short. I know it can't be from anything I've downloaded lately, I haven't downloaded much. The VirtualBox isn't showing any OS saved or running anymore.

Find where virtualbox saves the virtual disks to, and delete the disk you made for the linux machine. Either it didn't prompt you to delete it along with the machine, or you said no when it did.

Check the "Virtualbox VMs" folder under your home directory. It should contain a large .VDI/.VMDK file. Delete that -- that's the virtual drive which you allocated to the VM.
>>
>>58645758
Well, it has commits in this year so it's probably not about to die immediately, but one of the major problems facing OSS nowadays is forkophilia where: if someone is dissatisfied with x, they create a fork called y which improves feature α and β in version 1 and 2, but then what usually happens is that that fork stagnates and those changes never get upstreamed from y to x.

Personally, I blame Linux for sparking this philosophy with its endless distributions and lack of a base system.

Upon closer inspection, it appears to attach headers to make it appear as if your client is using a proxy, when it isn't - so only the most retarded site-admin wouldn't be able to spot that it isn't functioning as a proxy when scanning their access logs to find out where suspicious traffic is coming from.

When I'm downloading game patches in game clients (like Steam, Uplay, Origin, Battle.net, etc), typically my internet browsing turns to poop and pages take forever to load, even though I'm not utilizing my max bandwidth.

For instance, my max download is 30MB/s. I can download a game at 10MB/s in a game client, and my web browsing will slow to a crawl. But I can open up MegaDownloader and still get another 10MB/s downloading files and it has no negative effect on my web browsing.

I'm not sure why this might be. Can anyone offer any insight as to why my web browsing suffers from some downloads but not others, despite neither maxing out my bandwidth?

Just another type of LCD screen. They're like SSDs in that they're not strictly necessary, but really nice to have. Much better colors is their main thing, but it doesn't hurt that you can look at them from almost any angle. They are slower than the "default" TN pannel, so that's a consideration in shooter games specifically, although ones with "overdrive" modes can help compensate for that. A good choice for most people.

There are several different kinds of wireless video, and they each have their own requirements and troubleshooting methods. But most wireless routers have a hard time providing that much bandwidth. You could try turning the resolution of the signal down, reducing wireless bandwidth/interference, or upgrading the router to multiband 2.4 N or AC depending on what the projectors support.

>>58648664
Probably not. I think it's supposed to be a premium feature. Although I heard a while back that tablets get a lot of the premium feature for free. If you found a way to trick the phone into using the tablet app/interface you might be able to get around it.

Well I'm getting the impression that it only supports a proprietary transmission format, so that limits your options. You could try calling up the manufacturer and see if they have any tips, but there's a pretty good chance it's an issue with your wireless being too slow. You could always go for an extra long video cable or try connecting it to ethernet.

Do you just reinstall if you fucked everything up on your OS?

I don't have anything that I really need on it so I don't mind reinstalling. It's just that I thought it'd be a good learning experience to try and fix things myself rather than start over. Unfortunately I keep breaking more things as I try to fix them.

Initially I broke X after listening to my package manager telling me I had to change some lines in xorg.conf.

Then while I was in TTY, I figured I might as well upgrade my kernel, which I fucked up. Then I couldn't boot. So I booted up to an older kerne and trying to fix my boot issues I broke grub2.

I've been working on it for months on and off. Aka. making things worse. I'm a newbie biting off more than I can chew. Should I keep at it or cut my losses...?

>Initially I broke X after listening to my package manager telling me I had to change some lines in xorg.conf.

In 90% of X configs, you don't actually need xorg.conf. X will figure things out when the service starts.

Most installations don't even come with an xorg.conf anymore to prevent this confusion.

>I figured I might as well upgrade my kernel, which I fucked up. Then I couldn't boot. So I booted up to an older kerne and trying to fix my boot issues I broke grub2.

For GRUB2: chroot into the environment and update-grub / grub-install if you've fucked it completely.

I don't know how you managed to fuck up a kernel upgrade though. Is this one of those meme distros?

You'd have a better time just reinstalling anyways. You seem to have jumped into the deep end without floaties.

Nothing wrong with starting over. Try to learn from your fuck ups, at least enough to not repeat them. But it helps to have backups to fall back on. You can periodically run full backups with clonezilla so if something goes belly up you're not back at square one. Also timeshift is nice if you're running an ubuntu derivative. It's like system restore points for windows, but better.

I would just go with some "GoPhone" but those can't install any extra apps without the system complaining there's no more space.
>>
>>58649950
technically everything goes into root, but normally when someone says "root", they mean "everything except /home"
so that includes files from all packages, system-wide configuration files, system-wide services data (such as web server files), etc. system-wide stuff in general, since they're not in /home, only user-specific stuff is in /home
>>
>>58649982
>Is it a meme distro
Yes. It is Gentoo lol. I was hoping I'd learn more with it. I kind of have learned a bit through my failures, so there's that.

I've actually fixed grub2 multiple times now. I just keep breaking it. Is chrooting necessary as opposed to working from an older kernel version? Is there any real difference between the two?

I really don't know what exactly is causing the kernel to be so finicky. I even tried genkernel, but I still got an unknown block(0,0) error. Which I've fixed before but for some reason can't pinpoint what exactly did it this time. I would have thought it's the HDD drivers, but I used genkernel specifically to address that. And I even added where root is to the kernel options so idgi.

Then the worst thing is X. I have NO CLUE how to address it. I've tried so many things troubleshooting that bit and haven't gotten any closer to understanding what I did wrong. For that bit alone I'll probably have to trash it all.

I'll probably use gentoo again though lol.

>>58650070

>Yes. It is Gentoo lol.

A word of advice: Nobody in the real world uses Gentoo for serious applications. If you want to learn what most people use, choose CentOS or Debian/Ubuntu.

If you want to learn EVERYTHING, go through a Linux From Scratch book.

>Is chrooting necessary as opposed to working from an older kernel version?

No.

>Is there any real difference between the two?

Yeah. Chroot doesn't boot the system, so it doesn't run through init routines and doesn't set up low-level stuff like procfs automatically. It just "attaches" to a rootfs in-place.

> I even tried genkernel, but I still got an unknown block(0,0) error

This is a GRUB2 issue, not a kernel issue. Your grub.cfg is not pointing to the correct place on your HDD to boot.

>Then the worst thing is X. I have NO CLUE how to address it.

root is "/", not to be confused with "/root", which is root's home folder

confused yet?

/ = root of the filesystem
/root = home folder for user "root"
root (user) = user with highest privileges (can do anything, period), always exists, only use when necessary

/ is a logical space, with filesystems mounted under it, while it's difficult to compare it to windows, it would be closer to "my computer" than "c:\"

yes, it's completely normal for /home and / to reside on separate filesystems on separate disks
in fact, any folder can be a mountpoint for a separate filesystem

Gentoo works just fine for games. I was using it to play a bunch of steam games with hardware acceleration and a big reason I was using Gentoo in the first place was because I wanted the kernel customization to run Windows inside it with GPU passthrough. But debian/Ubuntu are usually going to be the most supported for games.

It is the community version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, which is typically used for servers.

Fedora is a rolling release distro which is used as testing for CentOS/RHEL.

For desktop usage, I prefer Ubuntu LTS for a stable experience or Fedora/Debian Testing for a rolling release model distro. All of the above should support the latest video drivers.

If you're worried about the amazon shit (which I believe is opt in at this point) then just go with another flavor of ubuntu like xubuntu or mint. Ubuntu is by FAR the most user friendly all purpose distro. You should assume it's the ideal option unless you have a good reason for something else

Im used to run windows 7/antergros dual boot with each os running off of a different physical drive. I recently uninstalled antegros and tried switching back to ubuntu. But, when i tried to install ubuntu, a got a notification that said

> This machines's firmware has started this installer in UEFI mode but it looks like there maybe existing operating systems already installed using BIOS compatibility mode...

Furthermore, antergros_grub still shows up in my BIOS as an option to boot from despite wiping the drive antegros was installed on.

I dont have much experience in linux and am pretty lost on how to remove the grub without wiping my windows partition. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Between 16 bit and 24 bit is the size: you get 65535 numbers with 16 bit and 16,777,216, and that's if they're not signed.

The difference between fixed point (like 16 bit numbers) and floats is their structure: with fixed-point you have only the number itself, while with floats you have a mantissa, which is the number itself, and the exponent, which is, well, the exponent. Now, while fixed point numbers have a constant increase, floats are more complex, because when the exponent increases, the mantissa becomes smaller. Small numbers are fine grained, allowing great precision, while large numbers are coarse grained, because of the larger exponent taking up space in the number.

I may be wrong somewhere, but you should get the gist of it.

Ah, nice. I think USB-C allows data and energy through the cable. Like how hdmi can do audio and video. Though I would think the manufacture needs to make available through the C port for it to charge.

I'd say if it doesn't explicitly say then the C port probably won't charge the battery.

But Amazon also has it's Q&A thing. Might ask in that and see if any other buyers knows or has tried before.

What's the difference between the <!DOCTYPE> and <html> tags?
W3 literally defines the former as:
"...instruction to the web browser about what version of HTML the page is written in."
and the latter as:
"...tells the browser that this is an HTML document."

Shouldn't the browser already know that the page is an HTML document from the DOCTYPE? Isn't that what it's for?

there are a few versions or html, and the doctype specifies which one the browser should treat the document as.

The comment section under the product is full with complaints that they had to replace them at around 12 months, some of those guys ordered dozens of them for their business. The internet is full of it as well how much of a pile of shit WD RED is. I had no problem with them. At all.

The same goes for trying to change the volume of just Kodi through windows volume mixer. The only thing that has any effect on the volume is muting the computers output. How the fuck do i fix this? I also tried changing the monitor resolution to 1080 via Windows and that didn't make a difference... Anyone have any ideas ?

My Intel I219V isn't playing well with my home network.

I have a gigabit capable network switch and router. When I connect my computer to the network, a 1gbps link speed is auto-negotiating as it should. It then proceeds to communicate at bytes-per-second speeds, or up to 30kbps sometimes if I'm lucky. If I force the connection to a 100mbps link speed, I get full speed connectivity (up to the limits of a 100mbps link).

So, I have all this gigabit network hardware and my primary PC can't even fucking use it.

Currently my home network is all linked with a mish-mash of various ethernet cables collected over the years. If I re-cable my entire house with fresh cat6 cabling, will this help me any or maybe even solve my problem?
