rsync on externals whenever I feel like it. Not ideal but does the job. Pissed though if I rename a huge folder as it recopies the contents instead of renaming.

rsync for data and dd for os images (basically what >>58641946 does). I have a full backup in case something goes wrong on an external HDD.

I don't backup the OS drive at all. 500GB SSD If/When Win7 breaks itself (usually happens like every 18 months,) I just do a fresh install.

Media is copy/pasted between 2x 5TB drives with 2x 1.5 TB drives for random shit. And then a 2TB with gamez n shit.
Also have an old 750GB with 3x 200 GB partitions with Mint, Fedora, and Server 2012 for fucking around which I hardly ever use cause linux is fucking awful.

>How very plebeian I know.
-I don't trust cloning/mirroring/raiding the media drives so just having 2 separate individual drives is the safest answer.
-Don't have the money to build/buy a NAS so my PC acts as media server/FTP.

ZFS and BRTFS look interesting

Rsync

>wasting money on data redundancy

I don't. My first hard drives are from 32 years ago and since then I had only one hard drive that failed. All the others work to this day.
>>
> All machines get an OS drive snapshot to the NAS every 30 days.
> Selected folders of secondary drives (if any) get robocopied to NAS every 30 days.
> 1TB external on my daily driver performs daily backups of key folders, covering everything but theft/housefire.

> NAS backs up to an encrypted and compressed 2TB external drive, one of three, every 30 days (48 hours after client backups).
> Second external drive with parents.
> Third external drive with inlaws.
> Disconnect and swap the drive currently connected to NAS with the one at whichever parental estate I will be visiting when I go visiting
> Offsite backup; Complete.
> TFW real world motivation to regularly visit all the parental units, not just some, thus balancing drive wear and maintaining fresh data.

Marriage has it's perks.

main drive ssd
2nd drive 3tb for work files games stuff

important work files text docs in dropbox, with a hard copy on the 2nd drive every week or so
(dropbox also on htpc and bedroom pc for redundancy)

2nd 3tb i plug in and sync over with freefilesync with verify option every couple weeks, i take note of "new" files, knowing large unexpected changes would be due to a virus/corruption

hardcopy of drobox on dvd every 6 months

i really dont have a lot of shit to backup
movies i got neflix/internet
or whatever i download i erase after watching
i dont collect porn

i don't
my gaem saves are all in the cloud
my code is all in github
I wouldn't care if i lost anything else
>>

Why?
Im not so attatched to my files.
I dont really have anything important in 1s and 0s
>>
>>58641407
I don't. Work projects I have on git repositories. The rest of my files are not vital to me, so if I lose them, so be it.

I don't give a shit about your memes.

>I have a backup script that just pipes out "dpkg -l" to a text file, then rsyncs my home folder to my home server.
What does that achieve? You like to keep around a list of installed packages or what?
>>

So underrated. I will definitely adopt this!
>>

It's not just a protection against disk failure, it's a protection against user errors, like accidentally deleting a file or somehow fucking up your partitions. In case of a laptop, it's also useful in case your laptop gets stolen. But sure, go ahead and feel superior for not wasting money on something as cheap as a backup harddrive.
>>
cp -R /my/working/directory/ /external/drive/backup/currentdate/
>>
>>58646690
1: Did you see the date? 32 years ago... sure, I just go ahead and don't get accustomed to any sort of know-how, that prevents me from having those "accidents".
2: Coincidentally, the last time I fucked up partitions was with those very first drives, I just felt like I do not need that huge fucking 21MB space all in one, so I wanted to split it. People at my student dorm told me to use fdisk for that, but conveniently "forgot" to tell me it will wipe data. Shitty idea of a prank. No partition has ever been lost since.

3:
>go ahead and feel superior for not wasting money on something as cheap as a backup harddrive
The most cost effective HDDs cost 10% my monthly wage per terabyte where I live. Not everyone lives in fucking 'murica receiving 3000 dollars a month.
>>
>>58641407
Robocopy to my RAID 1 NAS and also Dropbox for muh versionning.

Backblaze automatically saves my stuff (~3TB of photos). Also photos and videos taken by me get copied to an external drive with SyncToy irregularly. Pretty comfy desu.
>>
FreeFileSync is pretty good. Probably not as advanced as rsync but it works well with mirroring files. It even shows you what its changes before it does it.
>>
>>58641407
Photos taken are automatically backed up to my Tresorit cloud, so is my work folder on my PC.

The rest can go to hell. It would be doing me a favor, since I'm a digital hoarder.

>I have poor reading comprehension and know nothing of world finance - the comment
>>
>>58646753
The problem is that you come into this thread feeling superior to everyone for being "smart" enough to not have to "waste" money on backups because you have never encountered a bad harddrive and because you only accidentally deleted files once, which may not be true for other people.
Some of us have important things like old pictures and videos that are just not worth risking over the long term, and some of us have use cases that warrant backups, like when I went from ntfs to ext4 I needed an external drive to store my data, so might as well use it for backups afterwards.

>>58646874
If you can't afford to buy something once about every 4 years that costs 10% of your monthly earnings then you're the one that is shit with money. If you know so much about the "world of finance", then why are you a poorfag and why are you so bad with money?
>>

>Some of us have important things like old pictures and videos that are just not worth risking over the long term.
Old photos are on paper. New photos are on SD cards, everyone has their own copy. Videos are on DVD, which you could say is a backup, but it isn't, if you use it whenever you want to watch those.

>every 4 years that costs 10% of your monthly earnings
Sure, because you need only 1 terabyte of storage every 4 years.

>why are you a poorfag and why are you so bad with money?
I see. If I can't earn the same amount of money for the same job in any country of the world, that entitled 'muricans do in 'murica, I'm a poorfag, and bad with money. Flawless logic there dude, you totally know how money works, I'm so ashamed now! I'm writing an e-mail to my boss RIGHT NOW, that he should quadruple my salary, or I quit, because a random neckbeard in LA called Jack earns that much for the same thing I do!

>DVDs and SD cards
Fair point, but some of us choose to store our photos and videos on hard disks.

>you need only 1 terabyte of storage every 4 years.
1TB should be enough for a backup, and obviously you'll get more than a terabyte four years from now for the money that gets you a terabyte now.

>le america
I don't even live in the US, I live in a country where the minimum wage is like $500/month, but if someone can afford a computer then they can more than afford to backup. I'm not saying you should spend your money on backups if you're happy with your current shit, but it is not wasted money so don't tell people who backup that they waste their money.

>I get to tell people they know nothing about finance while simultaneously earning jack shit
Unless you live in fucking Ethiopia you don't get to do that. You don't have to earn as much for the same job, you just have to earn considerably more than average in your country.
>>
>>58647309
>>58647403
It's a cronjob, that's not how you run commands in the terminal. I also doubt that rsync is installed on your machine.

Carbon Copy Cloner - for both my wife and myself. This writes a .dmg out to FreeNAS.

Linux server pulls down various remote server / VPS tarballs. Same local linux server has LTO5 tape drive - writes all this (CCC dmg's + tarballs + misc) once a week.

Rotate tapes and always keep last week at our local bank in a deposit box.

I live in a country where the minimum wage is less than $350/month, and 2/3rd of the population is earning it. In. Europe.
>you just have to earn considerably more than average in your country
I actually do, with ~$600. Still considered "jack shit" everywhere else.

Partition D.
I have partition C for Windows, other programs and video games, and partition D for files, documents, music, downloads, videos, installers etc.
