What distro doesn't ship ssh by default?

Most essential things like eix, git, vim, screen, irssi or openntpd are already handled with the base install script, so it's the heavier things like xorg-server, KDE, Firefox or LibreOffice...

Kate comes with KDE. As a KDE fan myself, I wouldn't recommend Kate. If you really want a graphical text editor, Atom or GVim is probably the way to go right now.

The first and last package I manually install is app-admin/salt. From there my collection of config files handle the rest.
