>year of ultramobile laptops being charged via USB with possibility of charging via power banks
>passively cooled CPUs, touch screens, guaranteed all-day battery life
>retards still buy disgusting as fuck thinkpads requiring 90W 20V power supplies
Fucking disgusting.
Why do you insist on using deprecated non-ULV CPUs? Why not go with qt3.14 Atom X7-Z8700 instead? It does the job just fine, and has TDP of only 2W. It doesn't even require heatsink.
Explain yourself, /g/. Why do you hate mobility?
>>
>>58634604
>that pic

Absolutely disgusting. What's the point of making shit thinner if you are going to carry bulks external stuff because of the diminishing returns?
>>
>>58634645
Who said you need to carry "bulks external stuff" every day with your laptop?
I don't think anyone ever carries a power bank on daily basis.
>>
Companies sell Thinkpads for $300 at the very most.
>>58634682
Lots of people do, but they're the same people who don't charge their shit.
>>
>>58634682
>>58634645
also there are ultraslim power banks. You don't need to get the 18650 powered one if you get so buttblasted by disproportion between these two devices
>>
>>58634604
>why do you hate mobility
Because I can carry two more pounds and save $700?
>>
>>58634708
My asus T100HA with x5-z8500 cpu, 4GiB of RAM and 128GB eMMC cost me $150. I don't see these $700 anywhere, desu familia
>>
>>58634724
>$330
>dual-core 1.44ghz
>1280x800
>only 64gb emmc
Or I could get a refurbished Elitebook 8540w with 1.6ghz qc i7 or 2.66ghz dc i5, 1080p, 500gb hd and a fullsize keyboard for $300
>>
>>58634682
>>58634700
>Who said you need to carry
>I don't know what >that pic means

>I don't think anyone ever carries a power bank on daily basis.

I usually see a lot of people who bring powerbanks with them, which is understandable as phones severely suffer from the "lel thinness > actually important stuff like battery life" syndrome.

>also there are ultraslim power banks

If you can cram something like that in "ultraslim" housing, you might as well put it in the device in the first place, assuming you don't create a gayman laptop tier catastrophe by fucking up.

With that being said, I don't have a thing against even more portable technology but I also value functionality. You can't do a lot with such devices considering their specs aren't adequate for anything more intensive than web browsing so it's not logical to switch to something extremely thin and small for every person out there.
>>
>>58634604
That picture makes me really sad.

While tech is getting better people are pushing that "muh thinness" so hard that they are making battery life fucking dogshit.
>>
>>58634830
Why would I?
8540w is much, much bigger. It's noisy as fuck (it has a fucking fan!), it's thick as motherfucker and it lasts on battery power for like 2 hours of actual work.
It has no touch input, it's heavier than your mom's asshole and it generates lots of heat.
You can't charge it on the go ANYWHERE, including your car, plane, woods (thanks to the glorious power bank technology we had back in 2005!)
And it's a fact that almost nobody needs 45W qc i7, 500GB HDD and other shit to just browse the internet, streaming music and movies from the internet and sometimes do some coding remotely on your company servers.
Check your facts, m8.
>>
>>58634841
You're right if people depend on power banks every single day. This is dumb as fuck.
What I'm talking about is the possibility of taking a power bank, or two or three and actually go out for days with your laptop/phone always charged.
>>58634897
Since when ultramobile netbooks/tablets have dogshit battery life?
My $150 t100ha lasts for 18 hours of browsing the internet with 30% screen brightness. That's not dogshit-tier battery life, r-right?
>>
>>58634915
It's fan isn't noisy. You don't go "muh productivity" and then use a fucking toy that isn't plugged in. Literally anyone doing productive work has their fucking plug and uses it because they need the power and versatility of a full-size laptop.

No touch input because you get fucking grease on it which obscures your WORK. You use an inverter in your car you fuckwit. Normal adults have one.
>>
>>58635007
but we're talking about daily use, not your meme productivity use, retard.
You're supposed to be productive during your work hours, and that's when you laptop provided by your company, retard. Unless you're an autistic underage linuxfag who thinks ricing his anime desktop on the go is considered as productive.
Go on, define productivity.
>>
>>58635044
when you use*
>>
because phones already solved the ultraportable ultraweak shitposting machine market there's no point to get a laptop unless you can do something on it you can't do on a tablet
The new MacBook Pro is literally a tablet with a non-removable keyboard
Am I right?
>>
>>58635116
No, you're wrong.
Watching movies, gayming, shitposting on /g/ and running desktop software on a phone is autism. You don't do that on your phone, anon.
>>
>>58635146
You can do that on a tablet
Besides he's focusing on the ultra low power market, phones handle that easily and you can attach portable displays to your phone. The point remains that phones have the power of a macbook, and are much much more portable
>>
>>58635044
Why would you get the toy tablet in the first place then? Programming, compiling and browsing references, watching videos, skyping and shit is all daily work. With your toy you can't do any of that shit comfortably, let alone in high-def. You can't even Skype without installing another driver because Windows fucks everything up. And yeah, enjoy your botnet and broken updates while I'm developing Android applications on Linux with plenty of space for all the testing files.
>>
>>58634604
>year of ultramobile laptops being charged via USB with possibility of charging via power banks
Could you post any examples?

No trolling I'm genuinely interested as this is cool as fuck.
>>
>>58635146
You can do the same gaymen on a new MacBook as you can on an iphone
>>
>>58635179
MacBook is the only laptop with such shit tier performance that USB can supply all the wattage needed to charge
>>
>>58634960
>You're right if people depend on power banks every single day. This is dumb as fuck.

Have you gone outside in the near past? I see people who ask others for powerbanks/chargers almost daily. Battery life is an actual problem for most people since your average smartphone user doesn't run AOSP/CM and has a shit ton of useless stuff running in the background.

>18 hours of browsing the internet with 30% screen brightness
>internet browsing at %30 brightness

Top fucking kek. Who would have guessed that batteries don't discharge as quickly when you do less intensive stuff? Try doing some real work on that with the brightness set at a reasonable level and see what happens, it not like performance is a redeeming quality anyway. By the way the effect of thinness over battery life is much more prominent at phones.

Do you enjoy holding up your tablet and getting cum all over the screen while flipping pages with your filthy hands like some sort of monkey?

And the money I got is already invested
>>
>>58635699
>Are you poor

No, I'm simply aware of the fact that I don't need an SSD to store files such as videos and that upgrading from a 240GB SSD + 750GB HDD setup to a single 2TB SSD isn't that logical since I don't really have anything to gain. Not wasting money on stuff you don't have a use for != being poor.

>Although we should both agree most people on /g/ require 4GB RAM and dual core c2d at most to browse /g/, watch porn, post stupid shit on facebook and watch movies.

I agree, but you seem to miss my point. Slim, low end and thin machines with good battery life are perfectly suitable for lightweight tasks such as browsing but there are people who need both portability and power. So those thin ones can't really replace the bulkier ones in every scenario out there. We're both saying pretty much the same things.
>>
>>58635717
The concept that it is not possible to charge a laptop with a portable charge thanks to usb-c has absolutely nothing to do with apple or any kind of underpowered laptop with any battery size, completely irrelevant.

>Why do you insist on using deprecated non-ULV CPUs
They're 1/10th of the price and the only downside is a bit of bulk.
>Why not go with qt3.14 Atom X7-Z8700 instead
I have one, slow as shit compared to i5 2520

> Why do you hate mobility?
Im not a gay twink/ frail woman. I can carry 500g more and the extra space is negligible.
>>
>>58635712
>buy an SSD to upgrade laptop
>take existing HDD out, put it in a caddy and replace unused ODD with it

I get that HDDs and portable devices don't go well due to vibrations and such but I carry my laptop carefully so the HDD doesn't have any reallocated sectors despite 8074 power on hours.

>>58635741
Try running a business with that mentality, it's normal that someone ,who probably either still uses mommy's credit card or doesn't have a lot of money due to being a birger flipper, doesn't know jack shit about managing money. Let's say that I bought a donglebook, which is something I don't need. As I won't be able to sell it for the price I bought it for in the future, it's a loss in long term. The same goes for that 2TB SSD and by the time I will actually need 2TB of solid state storage, I will be able to buy a disk that's bigger and cheaper too. We are talking about computer parts not real estate.

sure, there are a line of workstation laptops, the message was that thin meme machines are just toys and people with good jobs need more than that
i cant believe i had to explain this to you anon, baka

Even if they are purchased on Ebay i dont think the cumstained ones are sold by corporate sellers that sell on bulk.

pretty much all non-p modern thinkpads are ULV ultrabooks. This includes X240,x250,x260,x270, t440, t450, t460, x1 carbon and others.
all marked by lelnovo as ultrabooks.
>>
>>58636931
you need to check their range more then
they have a W line with passmark 8000 CPU's
i understand not everyone can afford strong laptops for doing real work though

It seems like peak useful laptop design came and went with the mid-00's:
>replaceable battery
>serviceable parts
>usable keyboard
>modular drives
>reasonable array of integrated ports
Today:
>fixed components
>dongle for power
>dongle for non-flat keyboard
>dongle for peripherals
>dongle for drives
>dongle for ports
b-b-but it's so sleeeeeeek and shiny...until you hook up all the shit that allows you to get work done.

>Why do you hate mobility?
I like mobility.
But given that I can carry my T520 in my messenger bag with no protection, be rough with it, use it in broad daylight with the sun shining right on the display without being blinded by the reflection, use it comfortably in a cramped car without having to put my arm/wrist in a fucked up position because I don't have to use the touchpad, carry several already charged batteries with me and simply swap them instead of spending time charging the laptop on the go, look away from it in a public area and expect it to be there when I look back, and use it on my lap without getting third degree burns because the case isn't the heatsink, I think it is a more mobile computer than almost any fancy Ultrabook tier machine. Even though it's a little heavier and thicker.
An X series would be fine too, though.

if people are still wanking over laptops from 6 years ago because they can still get work done on them, it may speak to how little value is really being added by the newest, greatest processor iteration. most people aren't programming on top of a mountain - both the brick with a 2h battery and the new hotness with a 12h battery usually seem to be plugged into a wall socket in the office
>>
I mean shit, as long as the battery life is decent in the first place, it's nice to have the option to take a power bank for extra power, or leave it at home for extra portability.
>>
>>58636802
That's bullshit, Surface is not really used in corporate world beyond as glorified email reading tablet.

>>58636888
Even more idiotic, the pen is a joke. Alright to make some notes and draw basic sketches but no one is going to do serious work on it.

>>58637047
>replaceable battery
>serviceable parts
>modular drives
Are irrelevant for normal people. If your battery is dying or you need to service the shit, you make a call and replace the entire shit asap. Nobody with a semi relevant job has the time to tinker their fucking hardware.

>reasonable array of integrated ports
USB-C is ALL the ports in one with the right dongle/dock.

>reasonable array of integrated ports
>>
>>58634604
they tend to be severely lacking in other points

>shit, flat-as-paper keyboard
>no trackpoint
>non-replacable hdd/ssd/ram
>few IO ports
etc
>>
>>58637984
Except only fagbook is missing ports
>non-replacable hdd/ssd/ram
How does it matter to a normal person?
Do you also cry over non-replacable hdd/ssd/ram in your phone?
In 10" netbooks/convertibles it's a necessity
>>
>>58638197
>How does it matter to a normal person?
why should i care what a normal person wants? this thread is about /g/ users

>Do you also cry over non-replacable hdd/ssd/ram in your phone?
i wouldn't get a phone without a microsd slot, upgradable ram'd be nice, but afaik nothing is available with that
not that i personally use my phone for anything serious, i barely use half the ram in my 4 year old phone
>>
>>58638197
>how does it matter to a normal person
To be fair phones absolutely don't need that much. #1 user problems are USB ports which can't charge anymore due to the phone being alive so long or shit construction, and artificial deprecation of software causing slowdown or DRM malfunctions.

That's the reason they buy a new phone, but when they go to buy the new phone, all they care about is bigger numbers or if it's Apple. When you can literally sell a phone for $500 and it doesn't have a memory card port, battery slot, audio port, requires a dongle to charge and do anything else, and on top of all that, the literal only official bluetooth headphones drop and re-pair during phone calls, you know consumers are so retarded they should not be making their own choices.
>>
>>58637564
>with the right dongle/dock
Fucking exactly why it's a shitty solution. USB-C is good, but -only- having -few- USB-C ports and nothing else is shit. I don't want to carry 50 dongles along with my laptop just so I can use it with external devices. I want to carry my laptop, and nothing else.
>>
>>58634604
>deprecated non-ULV CPUs
they're depreciated if all you do is render webpages in an obscure coffee shop all day
>>
>>58638620
>and artificial deprecation of software causing slowdown
Nice meme but not really true. Blame the devs for being lazy with resources, which makes sense too, since there is no point to optimize for shit when people will buy a faster phone in 2 years either way.

>memory card port, battery slot, audio port, requires a dongle to charge and do anything else
Most people don't need that shit. All they want is a conflict free experience, which you won't get on cheap phones due shitty hardware. Also better cameras is a decent reason to upgrade.

>consumers are so retarded they should not be making their own choices
"WAAH, I KNOW BETTER WHAT'S BEST FOR OTHER PEOPLE NEEDS."

Can you at least imagine the scenario in which people want different things from a phone than you or that 500 bucks is not money worth talking about?
>>

ULV CPU means ultra-low performance.

I guess you can put up with that when developing some shitty javascript ecommerce site that sells screen printed mugs. Here in the real world we use databases and massive clients that require real CPUs. We have to support real computers because not every business is keen on buying 40 new workstations so they can run their production client in a browser and have to update it every time Google decides to change what HTML5 means.

i really wish javascript programmers used low end machines, at least that way they'd know when their scripts require far too much resources

I bought a Precision laptop awhile ago, really dumped a lot of money into it too.
It's an awesome laptop and has solid quality, but I am really regretting not getting an ultra-portable instead. I end up SSH'ing into clusters to do most of my programming anyways

With a Thinkpad you could just swap batteries if you need to be unplugged for a long time.

Good luck holding that abomination on your lap like a mobile workstation should be able to be used. Are you going to leave that big block hanging from the cord or put it in your shoe? Of course it looks like a nice setup on a table but so would any computer. That's not very mobile.
>>
>>58642442
The point isn't a mobile workstation.
It's for content consumption and schoolchildren probably, which it might be good at.
Most consumers don't need mobile workstations so ultraportables are a good deal for them.

My Asus t100 that I got for $150 can do all of that and I've had it since 2013. This isn't some new thing in 2017.

The advantages of a Thinkpad is a cheap, tough, and a work station that's portable.
