Is he right, /g/?
>>
>>58630782
A thousand times, yes. UI scaling in Linux is fucking awful and people should be ashamed.
>>
DPI A shit on any FOSS desktop, yes.

Im hoping wayland fixes this, but its _still_ not stable enough to use.
>>
macOS doesn't have that problem
>>
There are bigger problems than DPI. At least DPI CAN be handled properly.
Most DEs just generally fail horribly at specific tasks that make things infuriating, e.g. whatever that clusterfuck is that KDE calls an audio control center.
i3 has neither of these problems. Technically.
>>58630828
Because there isn't an option to change period?
>>
what a shitty fucking rant
>>
>>58630870
yes there is, you can turn off hidpi easily in the display settings
>>
>>58630828
It has the problem he describes. But at least you can set the scaling factor in the system preferences.
>>
>>58630782
how does he read the teeny tiny fonts?
>>
>>58630782
arround ubuntu 9.04, gnome and ubuntu was pretty damn good. ubuntu had more features out of the box then windowsXP and could handle multiple cpus/threads better. even wine made some major improvements and xp-games even ran faster one linux. vista was a disaster and everyone just said "use ubuntu, it's good". Ubuntu just had a few annoying bugs left but it wasn't too wild. people realized ubuntu and gnome was pretty damn good. then everything changed.

the world became insane. the end.

Better question is why does he use the Google+ botnet?

>>58630782
but gnome-tweak-tool does exactly this. And its the standard tool to change UI settings on gnome basically, Linus probably just do not know about its existence, because he uses fedora or some other retarded distro.
>>
>>58630782
GNOME is fucking garbage.
Linux fucking sucks.
>>
>>58630944
If it took him until your comment to find out what gnome tweak tool is,then that's still a failure on the dev's part
>>
>>58630909
Most terminal emulator, email client and web browsers all have font settings separate from the system UI.
>>
>>58630975
Not in gnome
>>
>>58630956
GTT is even an official GNOME project. If you open the overview and search for "settings" the tweak tool is among the suggested items.

Why the devs had to make an additional application and not just do a "show advanced options" in the settings is beyond me though.
>>
>>58630956
i kind of agree with this. i don't understand why instead of including gnome-tweak-tool by default GNOME chooses to be borderline unusable by default instead.
>>

The terminal emulator does have that.

Cinnamon does not have this problem. Cinnamon can easily scale whole UI (see pic) or you can just scale UI fonts by any amount you wish (in Fonts System Settings).

Cinnamon >>> GNOME garbage.

Linus should switch.

DPI soon to be kernel level

>>
>>58631023
Use a DE/WM that just reads your DPI directly from X like i3 does
>>
>>58630782
No, he's wrong. Using 1x DPI scaling on a 13.3" QHD monitor is a good way to fuck your eyesight. That shit is fucking tiny. Also, I'm not sure what he expected from Gnome. Use KDE if you want shit like that to be easily tunable (and it is: there's a simple DPI slider in the KDE display settings dialog.)
>>
>>58630980

>>58630983
Gnome-tweak-tool is included by default in any sane desktop-focused distro desu. In Debian and ,Ubuntu-gnome both desktop metapackages depend on it, so its installed by default. Why fedora choose to not include it is beyond me, but its just like them to just keep system configuration tools unaccesible or confusing from my experience.

>what if you want to to be 1.25x the normal DPI?
You will have to use dconf to set it to what you want.

I have three 4K & QHD screens and 99% of the time I just use this font setting scaling (see pic). I bump it to 1.3 or 1.5 depending on the screen. I do not scale the UI at all because I like smaller window chrome.

Anyway, after DE hopping for 4 years and trying everything, I settled on Cinnamon because it's THE BEST. Best File Manager, best DE etc. Just fucking rocks if you want a CLEAN nice UI that just works and isn't retarded.

>>58631026
NO U!
>>
>>58631023
you uh, use GNOME.
>>
>>58631096
And then you update to fix your font rendering holy fucking shit
>>
>>58630782
It is shit no matter how small the screen size is
>>
>>58631110
i prefer to have small fonts with a bit of blur rather than hinting. you keep your autism to yourself and i'll keep mine.
>>
>>58631096
that's font scaling, not UI scaling you retard.
>>
>>58631129
Update disabled hinting, nigga, it was a meme
There are better solutions on the other side
>>
>>58631096
this is just the fonts, not the whole gui. You change the hidpi settings in the "windows" tab.
Pic is polish but related.
>>
>>58630782
90% of the rant has nothing to do with DPI, and the one bit that does is completely moronic.
>>
>>58630814
>wayland
are you also hoping wayland will cure your faggotry? cause it won't. it's not even meant to, just as it's not meant to set DPI.
>>
>>58631189

Wayland supports per monitor settings and fixes a plethora of sizing issues. Why are you being so hostile? Did a wayland dev molest you?

>UI scaling in Linux....

Linux is a kernel, not a GUI. Linux has nothing to do with this. Go nag the GNOME developers. They are the ones who are responsible fro GUI scaling.

Next time read a bit into the matter before looking stupid on the internet.
>>
>>58630782
Yes, DPI scaling should be a setting and should always default to 1 (100%). It shouldn't autodefault to some bullshit that might make the whole unusable. He's also right to call UI people insane because quite frankly, they are.

>>58630870
As much as I like KDE, the way it handles audio is just fucking stupid.
>>
>>58631770
Could you be more pretentious?
>>
>>58631830
>Destroying the eyesight by default
>Not Bullshit
I'm glad special snowflake "I don't need no eyes" settings are turned off by default. The majority of DE users aren't spastic coders that need magnifying glasses to see every single shitty pixel. Let me guess, you need bitmap fonts too right?
>>
Scaling is annoyingly as hell and results in subpixel rendering issues especiallly on devices where scaling is a fraction
>>
>>58630782

>>58631870
You're an idiot.
Automatic settings rarely are right, and I'm mostly pointing to the specific case of Linus' rant where auto-settings cause the gui to break. I like having DPI settings, especially on big monitors, because no I'm not fucking interested in looking at my screen with a fucking magnifying glass.

Maybe next time you can read the post instead of immediately sperging out like the autistic little shit you are.

>>
>>58632566
I'm not your nerd, boi.
>>
>>58630976
Yeah it does.
>>
>>58630782
If the dpi are very high and no scaling happens you won't be able to read that shit and strain your eyes.
High DPI computer screens are a loose loose situation.
It's fine for mobile devices since they and their apps were made for high DPI screens.
