If you're going to update it you might as well install windows 10. Microsoft already deployed all the botnet on windows 7 updates. The wise choice is to only install stuff as you need it.

All I've had experienced and heard of others experiencing with win7 lately is that clean installing is a royal pain in the ass and nearly impossible tier due to how Microsoft has fucked with update servers, unless of course you want to install and leave it as SP1 with zero updates.

Unfixable BSoD loops are a thing now, apparently.

It's fine. Runs everything (games). No DX12 but that API seems unpopular anyway.

I have no reason to abandon Win7 and there is no pressure to abandon 7 but this ride can't last forever so it's disconcerting to know there is no real alternative atm. Windows 8.1 you can't disable theme to get that win98 look back so fuck that, the whole 2D flat plane aesthetic is dogshit. Everything windows after 7 is dogshit.

you don't need a AV. they fit the definition of malware pretty well - will slow down the system and take control away from the user with occasional UAC style popups.

You just need to not be a retard and don't download stupid shit. My friend just built his first ever PC and downloaded malware the same day trying to install 'codecs'. Fucking idiots everywhere, I haven't seen real malicious code 'virus' in years and years.
>>
I have a Win7 sp1 desktop with no antivirus and updates disabled. I use it for music production, and I have to be very careful if I use the internet/download stuff because I know it's very vulnerable

I'm paranoid, I won't even use email, check bank account, pirate software on it. My main computer is a laptop which runs Linux Mint and I use it for everything but music production. I wish I felt a little more safe on the desktop because it is a very comfy computer, runs really fast and has a big monitor.

dual booting is not an option, i don't want to risk windows fucking up hard drive with all the music on it. running linux isn't an option, no good music software and jack sucks.

>>
>>58628312
They have fucked with it a lot. What they did is made an update that deliberately bricks the updater to use almost all CPU and RAM, which silently installs as soon as the machine connects to the internet, regardless of whether or not wuauserv is disabled. They then released a patch to fix this update, to create more hassle for people installing Windows 7. Protip: Only install SP1. I've been running a clean SP1 install with no updates since I built my machine. It's just as fast as it was all those years ago.

You're right about it being fast, hell I did run that for quite some time as well without updates, but I can imagine how unsafe that is

Does anyone have the WIN 7 WES pastebin?
>>
>>58634775
This?Not pastebin though:

WES7 summary copypasta:
-Based off Windows 7
-Support ends in 2021 instead of 2020
-You can select components you want to install. Including removing IE.
-Embedded Features such as no GUI boot, RAMDisk driver, ability to be installed and booted from external HDD and write filters.
-Volume_BA channel, insert key and you are done. No activation.
-Enterprise features such as Applocker available in Windows 7 Enterprise/Ultimate
-Keyboard Filter* through group policy that allows you to disable keyboard keys/key combinations.
-Updates are on separate channel, does not install dedicated telemetry updates.**
**Do contain Quality Rollups though. Advice to either disable Update and use write filters:EWF(HORM)/FBWF or manually download the security only updates from windows catalog.
*Requires WEDU1.2 to download the update, and use DISM to add the package.

Thanks again friend.
What I didn't understand is what do I do with the .rar files? Do I literally just place them in a USB and plug the USB to whatever device I want to install on it?
>>
>>58635919
Many components are simple enough to understand, like Accessibility means Magnifier, narrator etc, so if you use one/some/all of them you check Accessibility. Don't worry if you forgot a component-- you can install it afterwards using this tutorial:
http://reboot.pro/topic/16383-windows-embedded-standard-7-add-packages-on-a-live-image/
If you are unsure about a component, just check it to maximize compatibility with applications.

The first file is .exe, so put all the .exe and .rar files in one directory and run the .exe. After extraction the .iso file appears.

>>
>>58631743

You can make yourself think you are safe all you want, but the fact is you are using an outdated OS that has countless hidden security vulnerabilities that no amount of 3rd party patchwork can possibly hope to fix. Unless your Windows 7 PC is completely offline or firewalled to the point that nothing can get on it, you're only fooling yourself if you think you're safe.

From what I've seen in this thread, Linux is much easier to learn than all the patches and workarounds that you need to get Windows 7 working properly.

If you really care about game compatibility, get a separate PC for that with W10 and just treat it like a game console that you only use for games, and then you'll have no reason to keep Windows on your main PC.
>>
Can you guys just get it together? Who is the real enemy here? Microsoft, Apple, that Linux guy? If I see something says "Microsoft is a botnet, run away" and then I get "Apple is not good but for girls and hipsters" and then I get "Linux is not really serious unless you've got a team of people dedicated to that system."

10 is crap and microsoft doesnt pay these shills enough to shill it here
>>
Won't be long until Microsoft either releases updates that sabotage the performance of Windows 7 or use the backdoor to sabotage it for users who turned updates off. They have to force users to update to 10 one way or another. The longevity of Windows 7 is matching that of XP and Microsoft is losing a shit ton of money because of it.

Vista flopped hard and Windows 7 saved the day. 8.x flopped hard too but Windows 10 isn't saving the day. Microsoft really wanted people to switch. They tried making it free as in gratis in the beginning. That didn't work. They brought back the start menu after their touch-oriented gimmick failed to impress. It didn't work. They tried luring in the Apple fans by oversimplifying things and calling everything under the sun an app. It didn't work. They included Windows 10 Mobile users in their statistics for users who upgraded to Windows 10. It fooled exactly nobody.

As of today, the majority of Windows machines in the developed world still don't run Windows 10. And if it weren't for the shady deals with hardware manufacturers and the prevalence of games that require DirectX, Microsoft would have been finished by now.

>>

Except he's correct.
The only hope Microsoft has is a new architecture that completely prevents people from using an older win on x86.
But then again: They always support a truckload of legacy so I don't think it could be done.

They're on their way out so they have to juice windows 10 with ads, botnet, and shit design because they are incapable of producing anything better.
>>
>>58659132
For once /g/ is on the money.

Once DirectX12 launches, micorosoft plans to only support 64bit and not 32bit.
(goodbye legacy software)
(steam has alot of windows games in 32bit also but microsoft is planning on re-launching their gaming service since it includes xbox crossover and will force alot of devs to create exclusives)

there is actually a war atm with steam and in retaliation they are have all their devs focusing on steamos and linux first and foremost.

Lastly microsoft has made numerious distributors and manufacturers to pre-load windows 10 and to lock the bootloaders/bios to prevent any other installations.

SCREEN SHOT THIS.

Well you have to verify after each dependency check, and adjust (other components as well, especially components that need IE) until undesired objects are removed to your liking. Note that compatibility may be impacted if you remove a crucial component that "depends" on IE.
If you are not keen to reinstall, then run the following as admin:

DISM /online /remove-package /packagepath:”e:\ds\packages\featurespack\amd64~winemb-ie-explorer~~~~6.1.7601.17514~1.0\WinEmb-IE-Explorer.cab”
DISM /online /remove-package /packagepath:”e:\ds\packages\featurespack\amd64~winemb-ie-core~~~~6.1.7601.17514~1.0\WinEmb-IE-core.cab”

Where e:\ is the path to your DVD/USB/extracted iso file.

Activating office have nothing to do with it, unless you missed out an important component. If that is the case you can use dism /online /add-package to install the features you missed.
