literally false. I switched to Startmail and switched every account I have over to it. Not one place complained. Most websites, actually, will let you use any address they can deliver an email to.

protonmail/tutanota and so on can send and receive mail to normal accounts

from what I see in the specs, only "Trustful" mode uses SMTP, POP and IMAP while "Cautious" and "Paranoid" allegedly do not

also, as far as I've understood, thunderbird will be able to operate with a DIME/Lavabit account only if you're in "Trustful" mode

otherwise you'll have to pick a special snowflake Thunderbird fork called "Volcano" or something
and, as far as I can see, if "Trustful" mode is the only mode one can inter-operate to well-established mail providers (I'd like a confirm on this), that's no different than trusting $random_guy for your mail; also, it's a step backwards from tutanota's or protonmail's approaches

The only improvement we need on email is a *definitive* way to get rid of spoofed mail (spf and dkim and dmarc are not)
