The phone is a Samsung J7 Prime.

Sometimes the cables themselves wear out. Look on the flat side of the micro-usb to see it its hooks are stuck in place.

It's the fucking cable breh. I have a similar phone (J7) and stock cable was wore out and broke like in a month. Got an anker nylon cable with gold-plated contacts as a replacement and after 2 months if use hasn't given me problems.

There's a small space between the usb socket and the body of the phone. Is it normally like these on phones?

Sometimes, especially with the lowgrade Samsungs (j3, j7, core prime) the port's tend to be like that. Just don't try to apply it in too hard or the internal socket might snap.
