It came with the industry standard 4 gigs of ram and a 5400 rpm hard drive for extreme speed!
>>
Those 5400 RPM drives will lose any notion of speed in 1-2 years. After that, the computer will feel like a laptop from the 1990s. Chuck it out for an SSD immediately and it'll last you a while.
>>
>>58601797
already done, actually

and the only reason it doesn't have 8 gigs or more now is that I don't have any handy

As a long time Thinkpad user (my T420s in the background there):
- the trackpad is amazing, and I've used trackpoints for years
- the screen looks nicer and has better viewing angles (even if the thinkpad has the resolution advantage)
- thinkpad feels robust and quality, this feels premium
- magsafe is great
- the keyboard is lacking pgup/pgdn, delete and various other useful keys (but the backlight is nice and it's good to type on)

Discuss.

macOS has shortcuts for those functions, like Fn+Backspace is Del key and Cmd+Backspace is delete.

Cool, this is a mid-2012 as well

I'm not going RAID tho, it's fast enough like this and I like having the optical drive (even in current year)

Having separate keys is better than shortcuts, with shortcuts I need to think and use more fingers. The thinkpad keyboard is pretty much perfect, can't deny that

That's great, the mid-2012 13" is a great 13" model, even with it's HD 4000 graphics, more than enough for such a size, specially if you have the i7 instead of the i5.

You can use the 18,5V 85W charger with a 16,5V 60W laptop.
But never use a 18,5V 85W laptop with the 16,5V 60W charger.

Conclusion, just get a 18,5V 85W and it will work with every Magsafe 1 Mac.

You have all the F-unction keys, you can toggle between using them as F keys without needing to press anything. Also why do people who never used Macs think they don't have shortcuts? It has a huge library of them out of the box already and you can customise them all without 3rd party software.

I had to choose between 15" 2011 MBP or 13" 2011 MBP, same price, I went for the 13" 2012, just because I like the smaller form factor and the graphics isn't even much worse. I also know about the 2011 GPU failure rate, kinda off putting, but can't say I like the bulky 15" anyways.

Restored a mid-2009 MBP recently, so it became my way of getting into Macs after many years of everything else. Swapped with a cheap SSD and it's making for a pleasant learning experience.

Not expecting it to replace any of my Windows machines because that's not what it's for. I understand that it's a Mac and it has its own purposes. I do find it, however, quickly overtaking the role of my Chromebook as a comfy shitposting machine.

I agree that the lack of pgup/pgdn/home/end keys is annoying, but the trackpad and build quality more or less make up for it. Debating replacing the battery, since it only gets about 3 hours if I nurse it. Haven't found 4GB to be much of a bottleneck yet either.
>>
>>58605199
Not to mention, you will get a shitty experience anyways with such an old unit. Even a ThinkPad from 2009 is hard to use as a main machine.
>>
After I got myself a MBP, the only thing I still use my desktop Windows workstation for is gayming.
>>
>>58605261
You're talking to a guy who's done very little heavy work away from the desktop. Most of my laptops get handed to me, so I've always had this notion that laptops are for lighter work. I know this to be false, but I still don't expect a lot out of portable computers. So for me, this is a good get, especially seeing that some retards will still pay over $400 for this model.

I've been thinking that it might be trying to use some old password from my Apple ID, but yeah it was really weird.

kek no. Why would I buy a computer for twice the price of a normal one and every little addition I want to make is super expensive. Even the fucking adapters and cables for it are terrifyingly expensive.
>>
>>58608027
Probably to do with the fact that it syncs your mac's serial with the OS and your account, doing a reinstall might have caused it.
>>
>>58608083
Dunno, my MBP was cheap as fuck and in great condition.

You can even see the Xfce desktop in the OP picture.

Let me try this again…

Install gentoo on your new toy already.

It's the MacBook of ThinkPads.

The 15" quad i7 and dedicated GPU is even better. Still same ports and looks.
>>
>>58608431
>dedicated GPU

I wouldn't trust those to last. I've watched Louis after all. Which is why I was careful to pick one with iGPU
>>
>>58608463
We are talking about the 2012 line, I don't know anyone who had GPU problems with those, Apple learned after the 2011 GPU failure.

Well since this is the macfag thread I guess I may as well ask this here.

How exactly do I get an imac g5 to boot off of USB when in kernel panic mode? I've tried things that I found via google searching but the thing never actually boots off the usb, it just goes straight to this screen.
>>
>>58608491
Oh, I see. I'm still going to be wary of them though.

>>58608518
I don't think the PowerPC Macs can even boot off USB.
>>
>>58608491
Yeah, that's why they shat out throttling housefire for another 6 years after that.
>>
>>58608526
Yes? Literary the failure rate of those in non existent VS the 2011 line.
>>
>>58608533
I was told that it could. God damn it, oh well.

After the kernel panic started I was going to try and work around it by putting some linux distro on it, but I guess that's not an option.
>>
>>58608564
CD boot?
>>
>>58608564
The imac was an old gift from a family friend, and they didn't give the CD with it. I think they lost it or something. All I know is that I don't have the install disk to do that with so I was hoping the USB boot would work.

Get a USB CD/DVD R/W and get a disk image off TPB. It's not rocket science or expensive.

That's one of the things I dislike about OS X. It doesn't really have a culture of free software. I even found some shareware for it in [current year].

Can we just address how the terminal is transparent through the fucking screenshot ?
Why does OS X apply an alpha channel to screenshots like this at all ?

No, anon. The blurred background behind the transparent terminal is eye candy.
The screenshot itself being transparent is just retarded, and if anything it only serves to make it even uglier than it already is.
>>
>>58609428
>>58609555
Because he has transparency and blur enabled for the terminal. macOS uses PDF type graphics for everything. That's why I used JPG not PNG for screenshots, it's easily changeable.
>>
>>58609428
>>58609555
because it's accurate like that

Serious question btw.

Hey speaking of buying shit:
>order compuder on bestbuy website
>bank cockblox it, tell bank to gtfo
>bestbuy lets me update payment info
>put same info since I told bank to gtfo and I was buying this
>2 charges for computer show up on account at bank
>eventually best buy says ok come get combuter
>go get it
>2 days later, there are no charges on my bank

You think I just got my $1700 computer for free or it'll come back and charge me later?
>>
>>58609667
>So you mean to tell me that your monitor becomes transparent when certain composition effects are enabled in your applications ?
No, but if you want to take screenshots of actual transparent things than it will stay accurate.
