I want to dual boot linux with windows but I heard that it is a huge pain in the ass to setup.
>>
>>58593665
It's not, but Windows' bootloader will keep overpowering GRUB as the default bootloader.

the only two pains I see:
- I assume you want to share data instead of keeping the OSs totally separate, so you have to tweak windows settings - by default it doesn't shutdown completely, but hibernate, this leaves NTFS partitions in a bad state and Linux will refuse to mount them (you can override this, if you need)
- sometimes Windows gets bossy and overwrites your bootloader so you'll get booted straight into Windows without the Win/Lin choice, have to write GRUB again

Install windows.
Install Linux.
Boot into Linux and configure grub to your liking.
If you don't know how, use grub-menu.
>>
>>58593695
I'm fine with keeping the OSs separate. I just need to buy a Thumb Drive so I can move my stuff on the Linux partition.

>>
>>58593616
i actually have a job so i need windows to work with AD and exchange. linux is too difficult to manage en masse (things like puppet help, but only for strictly redundant servers)
>>
>>58593695
There is also another small issue with windows when dual booting. If you boot into linux and then reboot into windows, the time on windows will be wrong and you either have to manually go to settings and sync it again or wait a while (took 30-60 min for me) until it synces automatically.

Yes, I do.

yeah, I'll keep using Windows.

factually false, most hardware is supported out the box

Factually false, many programs have FOSS alternatives that do the same thing

>no Adobe
>no Xamarin
Just install Windows in a VM.

>no apps
Redudant
>>
>>58593665
I prefer Linux on VM. I just browse the internet and use drawing programs and LibreOffice on it. I have to use Windows to program for school. I prefer programming in LInux.
>>
>>58597250
>Factually false

You know you can just say false and it will mean the same thing right?

Good post op. Both Linux and osx absolutely btfo windows for programming.
Just walk around in Palo Alto, probably 70% Mac, 20% Linux and 10% wangblows
>>
>>58593814
Adobe what? Find an alternative, use WINE, use container, use a VM. This is computing where the only limit is your hardware, your imagination, and your google/stackexchange search skills.
>>
>>58598123
Linux and OSX lack Visual Studio, which is the best IDE for the languages it supports.

>>
The only reason is .net framework and visual studio because muh job.
>>
>>58598190
There's no real alternative to Adobe. :(
>>
I don't use Windows right now, but -every- fucking time that I have to set up windows 7 (not 10) on a different computer, I keep being reminded of the good times, and I want to go back to it despite other OSes being better.

It's sad, because no current OS does everything that I want. It's always dual booting or having shit left out.
>>
I use hackintosh. Dual booting into windows isn't difficult. It's just, it's so comfortable in macOS that if I have to be reminded that I -have- to boot into Windows to play anything more powerful than indie 2D games (which, believe it or not, I play under Parallels rather than using Wine) I'm just gonna throw this fucking computer out the window
>>
>>58598190
If you have to find an alternative, that's a fucking limitation, moron
>>

no thank you

>Want illustrator on Linux

>Just use an alternative!

>Just use WINE!
>Opens once, then crashes, then never opens again, have to reinstall it so I can run it -once- again
>Doesn't show some effects

>Just use a virtual machine!
>Half of the shortcuts don't work, nevermind about performance
>>
>>58593616
sure, let me just fire up my industry standard 3d modeling and game asset development applications on *MacOS/Linux

oh wait

*MacOS has some support for some key programs but anecdotally I've heard shit (ie Maya) runs much worse there, and fuck being tied to Apple's idea of good hardware configs and pricing.
>>
>>58600709
It's true though, there are not that many applications worth a shit on macOS. Performance wise Windows is better for those specifically. Just like it is with any software that involves 3D graphics and that will not change anytime soon. Windows is a necessity nowadays.

It's sad, because macOS has a few very neat little features that don't seem to ever be adopted by the competition.

>he expects people to use a pile of garbage that's good for nothing other than headless servers
>>
>>58597250
>factually false, most hardware is supported out the box
factually false, most companies don't write drivers for Linux, while on Windows/MacOS is basically plugnplay. If my mouse 4 and above don't work and if my pinch gestures on the touchpad don't work on Linux then it's not supported out of the box. It's the same shit as Windows' generic drivers, it's shit that's only supposed to be basic functionality.

>many programs have FOSS alternatives that do the same thing
No, they don't. They do it worse, with much worse UI and UX. There are much more software on Windows.

never understood this meme.

That's because it's literally a meme. Loonix/OS X are only better for hipster shit like Ruby web dev. For everything else, like C++ games or desktop application programming, Windows is far, far better.

Unless you are a lowly wagecuck trying to please your master by torturing yourself with malware ridden proprietary trash every day, there is no reason not to use the FOSS alternatives on Linux.
What's that? It doesn't have a feature you want or has an ugly GUI? Fucking change it the way you like, because that's actually an option. Or request said changes from capable people who are not just button pushers like you.

If you do it in the opposite order than Windows will fuck everything up, as it the case with Windows. Linux is cool and works with what's already there.
