If you have a picture of your watch being worn from a straight on angle, please feel free to post it along with your wrist size, diameter of the watch and lug-to-lug of the watch. Because it comes up so frequently I'll try and compile a small collection of images of wrist-size and lug-to-lug length combinations that can be used for reference, rather than simply telling people that they should be looking at smaller watches.

If you're not sure how to measure your wrist, you can take a flexible tape measure, or just use a piece of string and wrap it around your wrist, then measure the length of the string required to circle your wrist.

Wrist size should be in inches, lug-to-lug and diameter should be in mm.

Thanks.

Be very fucking careful buying online, particularly with a vintage Rolex.

Buy the seller not the watch, make sure they have a stellar return policy, and have it immediately checked out for authenticity.

Alright so you're aiming for tritium dial Rolex watches with the old-school acrylic glass.

The first thing I would say is having a watch shop open the caseback and examine the movement. From this time period and with these watches you're probably not going to be seeing a whole lot of (non-obvious) fakes in terms of dial, case, etc. but you could very easily end up with a Frankenwatch. Learn very precisely what that Rolex caliber looks like and look at it with the expert to make sure that it's both correct AND it matches that specific year (i.e. that someone didn't dump in a later date Rolex movement into their old case). Some other very important things are making sure the cyclops magnifies correctly (the date should pop out at you) and that the typeface on both the dial and all of the date wheel numbers are correct. I have seen Rolexs with incorrect, presumably aftermarket date wheels and you don't want to be stuck with that shit.

Some things to check once you get the watch include making sure no one relumed the dial, making sure there's no grittiness in the manual winding or holdups, and ask if it's been serviced recently and require paper proof of said service (if not that isn't a dealbreaker necessarily, just budget in up to $600-700 for a full restoration if it needs it).

>how does it work?

It's a GMT complication. The Explorer II was designed for cave exploration, and in caves it can be hard to tell whether it's day or night so the red hand acts as a day/night indicator by showing what time it is in the 24 hour format by where it points on the outer steel bezel. Although the more practical function of the GMT hand for 99.9% of people is telling the time in two different timezones. You can set the 24h gmt hand to one timezone (say your home's time), and the hour hand to whatever the local time is where you are at. This complication was initially developed by Rolex in the 1950's for airline pilots of Pan Am Airways and debuted in the aptly named GMT-Master.

for $300-$400, the Steinhart Marine Chronometer 38mm has the same hand-wound movement (ETA Unitas 6498-1), heat-blued hands and sapphire.

I just can't justify spending $800. but my 2 cents is my 2 cents.

this is the (obvious) important part - if you like the antea, that's all that matters. because the antea has it's own modernized look for a deck watch.
>>
>>58597431
>steinhart
I will never wear a steinhart. And you're confusing a lot of things, there are no 38mm 6498 watches, the stowa antea is their bauhaus watch with a peseux 7001 not the 41mm marine original deck watch with the 6498. peseux 7001 or sw210 movement watches that are "better values" than the stowa I'd love to hear about. christopher ward makes one that's close but it's 40mm and it just seems too unnecessarily big.

Who is this guy? I see him posted in lots of watch threads. From the videos I've seen he doesn't have a very nice home, so why buy luxury watches if you're not wealthy? Won't people know you're a fraud if they see your car or house?
>>
>>58599273
It's an Onrery Horned Aussie. It sits in a room screaming at a camera until a debt collector knocks on the door. Then it can go into hiding without food or water for up to 2 days.

Mating habits are still unknown.
>>
>>58599273
>Who is this guy?

It's Paul Pluta, who runs the youtube channel ArchieLuxury and is a method actor who plays the character Archibald Chesterfield III (popularly known as "AC3").

He's an eccentric Australian with Tourette's Syndrome who despite being comically poor and currently unemployed, spends all of his money buying solid gold Submariners and other luxury watches and reviewing them (and all other luxury watch brands).

He's legitimately one of the better watch reviewers if you can get past his eccentricities as he will steer you away from "shitters" and towards watches of great horological value and value retention (which is important for people that don't have a lot of money).

Nomos makes 95% of their watches (in value of parts) in-house.

The only major components they don't make are things like the shock protection, case, sapphire glass, and straps.

Their latest movements also have near chronometer level accuracy out of the factory.

Their automatic movements have 5.8% less friction than competing products. And they are around 3mm thick.

The movement they use for their Lambda line has a 3+ day power reserve.

Depends what you really mean by that. 99% of velcro straps do follow that roughly, there's not a thousand different intelligent ways to make a velcro strap, but if you want something perfectly accurate you won't find it at a cheap price. EIther it's >$30 for an historically accurate atrocious looking strap that looks like it cost $2, because that's how terrible they look like, or you pay a decent ~$15 and may even end up with something better built, like the one from Timefactors, which also has some orange stitches to add some color, and a nice looking, quality steel buckle.

There's no middle ground, it's either a decent velcro or an autist one.

Their american heritage is fake, their swiss heritage is fake and their designs are pretty bad outside of the one you posted. And even then they are now offering 40mm and 42 mm models of the same watch have been horribly fucked up.

Also note how the 15 is aligned slightly to the left to accomodate the ETA movement. This is still the least bad one, but fuck me dead has that company ruined this classic design.

It's a Pilot Custom 74. Dry time usually depends on a variety of factors. Nib size, the properties of the ink, the properties of the paper you use. There's quick drying ink and paper that does better than others at soaking in ink but keeping feathering minimal at the same time.

Yeah, all my hobbies seem to be expensive. I used to be into cameras, but I realized I'm pretty shit and the one I have is good enough.

What should I do with this. The capacitor is bad.

Fairly accurate. Haven't checked in a while, but it was running within a few seconds a day.

Of course there is, but it's just more shit that has to be right for fountain pens to actually be something you can use at work. I used to try taking notes in meetings with an EF nib on rhodia or clairefontaine paper but as often as not I'd get called into something last minute and trying to write on office depot steno pads. I've given up on pens completely and use a mechanical pencil now.

Try shoe collecting. Most people just wear some pair of shit shoes that cost about $100-300 even in upper tier finance. The best you're going to see on most floors are Edward Green tier. Bespoke shoes are genuinely rare but very much worth it.

I haven't bought any pens lately. This would be the latest, but it's been months and I haven't even used it. I managed to get some cartridges of dark lilac, haven't used them though. Wanted to grab a couple bottles, but they sold out fairly quickly.

>>58611513 #

It's more of a characteristic of the pen's nib rather than having good writing. Stub nibs automatically improve the look of your writing.
>>
>>58611477

I use a Lamy rollerball for when I need to write on bad paper, although it does still smudge if it hasn't had a few seconds to dry.

Eh, my feet are size 13 and wide. There's rarely a shoe that fits me well other than pliable sneakers.

A pair of ECCOs lasts me about 3 years, and I'm pretty hard on my shoes.

I don't think I could handle $1500 shoes

I'm starting a new job soon. I'm 24 and afraid to look like a tryhard at work with my fountain pen. What do I do.
>>
>>58611776
Just use a regular pen then nigga. This ain't hard.
>>
>>58611776
if anyone has a problem stick the fountain pen up there ass seriously who cares what other people think
>>
>>58611645
I had a Lamy Vista for a while but I never liked how cap-heavy it felt. Dropped it a few times and the barrel broke near the threads.

>>58611669
Yeah, I just buy new Eccos every couple of years. I tried Mephistos for a bit but they didn't fit my fat feet very well. They look ugly af, too. Eccos are just boring and plain looking, which is fine in a shoe. I'd like to try something made out of shell cordovan at some point, though. Get something in horween #8 and wear it every day, to hell with matching it to my belt and clothing in general.
>>
>>58611794
haha I guess I dont often care what others thingkbut its pretty tryhardy to use fountain pens being some shit kicker grad. I prob will use something less serious looking

Who cares man. I always kept these three on me in class and if someone was interested I'd let them try it out. Once I let someone use a pen and they nearly broke it, but that was my fault for saying hey, here's a pen, without watching them try it out first.

My captcha was amazing. Posting in next reply.

I doubt anyone will care. Unless you bring it over to the watercooler to brag about it.

My handwriting is actually pretty plain, but because I hold fountain pen nibs at a 45 degree slant my writing looks neat using a stub or italic nib.

That same quirk means a steel Lamy 1.5mm stub is smoother for me than any gold stub or cursive italic, because ill catch corners if there is any flex.
>>
>>58611847
Sweet pens, what are these? I guess you're right, its a pen afterall and I have a nice one rather than a common BIC. I am probably over thinking it
>>
>>58611847
How does someone actually fuck up the pen? Do they hit it with too much pressure and at a weird angle or something?

Are the rhodium tips easily worn out?
>>
>>58611769
Yes. The Club is the cheapest. Their other watches with the same movement are >$1,800

Lamy 2000 and Lamy Studio. Studio is probably my favourite to write with during long periods of time.

>>58611907

They were used to writing with a ballpoint and using tons of pressure, so they did the same with a fountain pen, I think the tip burst or something because ink splattered out, but it still works fine.

I refuse to wear a watch over 42mm. Even that's too large, and I have large wrists.

Why do you guys insist on these 44mm monstrosities.

Also your opinions on Longines.

Is there a watch that meets the following specs:

1. 24hr dial
2. "Night" half of dial is a different color that can be read at night (i.e. Black on grey, green on sand) without needing tritium or other elements
3. Matte finish
4. Atomic time
5. Meant to be worn on inside of wrist
>>
>>58614619
Also it should have a chronograph or tachymeter that is also easy to read.

I guess glow-in-the-dark is acceptable as long as it only glows a dull red that would not be very bright if viewed through an IR camera.
