god I miss having proper speakers
living in an apartment sucks
Sort of a WIP. Wall mounting the TV then working on some better speaker placement and getting a nice media stand for the Thorens and the amp. Also gonna pick up a Marantz receiver soon.
>>58583238
>Marantz
Vintage or new? Either way, the Yamaha integrated should be better.
>>58583391
Was thinking vintage, 22xx. The Yamaha is an AS300. I'm open to other amp suggestions but I thought the marantz would tie everything together aesthetically (dumb reason I know) and also my system is fairly bright with an AT440MLA on the Thorens. Thought about tubes but not sure.

Chances of getting a good deal in used hardware are very slim
The most famous trade platform here are filled with scammers and people who sell used stuff "good as new" at 95% the original price, wich piss me off a lot since this way I'm paying the VAT to them
We have a craiglist but its almost only used for dates

Tampa FL. Best Deal you can find up to $1K.
>>58583947
$1K? You can get a ton of good shit for 1K. What kind of music do you intend to play.
>>58584049
Why is "What kind of music do you play?" a relevant question?
>>58584108
because different models of higher tier speakers resolve output differently - some speakers are much better with midrange, and others with high frequency; and some people just want a massive device to blast bass heavy death metal that shakes the foundations of the house, and so forth

>>58586435
Are you suggesting that you're going to drive standard sized passive speakers using a headphone amplifier?
>>58586243
Obviously none to be had at that price point but you don't go and pick speakers at any price point based on your musical tastes. The two, loudspeaker response and preference of musical genre, don't match. I have Genelec 8050s and HD 800s. No Skullcandies, sorry.
>>58584924
Portable? Any price point? Starting from non-portable start with Schiit Fulla 2. If you want something fancier, there are plenty of options.
>>58587320
"Anyone claiming that any speaker is the best is talking nonsense. Speakers are full of counterbalancing compromises. Improving one aspect inevitably leads to compromises in other areas."
Also, the autistic dependence on only a single parameter notion of "flat" suggests OCD not good judgment.
>>58587557
Every device ever conceived is nothing but an engineering balancing act. Even with no budget you will still be making some design choices where you balance aspects based on their importance for the goal.
My point was the lack of connection between musical taste/genre/artist whatever and loudspeaker design.
I mentioned directivity along with flat response. No matter what your use case for the loudspeakers is. An extended, smooth and flat response as well as predictable, smooth directivity are areas which you don't want to change or fuck up. How wide or narrow the dispersion is, how small or large the loudspeaker is, how sensitive it is, how loud can it play, how far away from them you need to be in order for the driver's sound to mix and the speaker to open up etc are all design choices for different listening environments around which try to make the loudspeaker hit the similar if not the exact same goals in fidelity.
>>58584434
Sorry for being late, but those Martin Logans are very intriguing. Looks like a CLS/CLS II variant. From the pictures there need to be repaneling which can cost $1K+ and I'll probably need some serious woofers as those old ESLs had no bass. Also probably good amp since those were power hungry. Thanks will probably take a look at those.

Odd light reflections. Big one in the middle looks fine but the smaller ones on the side may be issues. Also wood on bottom right looks damaged, so was probably not even stored well. Even in perfect form, ESLs from 1990 probably still need replaneling.

Show me a class D amp that can run 2 8ohm impedance drivers at 20-50 watts rms with less than .1% t.h.d. on a 4s lithium battery. I've looked everywhere and this combo is an unicorn. Most d amp requires retardely high vdc and if I go class ab I recon I have to make some stupidly heavy 4s6p or just strap car battery to my speakers

I have leftover 4s balancing board from my last project and shit ton of 18650 batteries. Would be nice to use what I already have to have to make a portable speaker
I currently have a Denon RCD-M40DAB with Monitor Bronze 1's (excuse the shitty setup, I'm currently living in a tiny flat). I'm moving to a house with much more space next month. Should I ditch my current setup entirely and get some nice floorstanders (probably the Bronze 5's) and a receiver that supports biwiring or just add an active sub? It feels like my current speakers are more than capable of filling the new living room, I'm currently running them with the port bungs and they're still a little boomy.
>>58600394
thats a well balanced set up you have -- one of the best ive seen on /g -- the speakers are great, and the Denon is strong but also has a capable preamp; allows you to repurpose it to run an additional amp and speakers if you ever wanted -- smart
a good condition REL or Quad subwoofer would really free up the Monitors to do their thing
>>58600723
Thank you very much. Would you recommend the REL or Quad over the Monitor Bronze W10? If so, would the REL T5I be the correct complement to the Monitors?
>>58600723
>>58600764
To add, I just had a talk to my local hifi supplier (the same one who helped me choose my current setup), he suggested the Dali E9F. Any thoughts on that vs the aforementioned options?
>>58595884
How about these? Could you make them as fake marble as these?
>>58595884
>build yourself
>>58600764
your supplier likely has the most listening experience so i'd go with his recommendation
my recommendation was based on what's usually available in the US for not that much, used, because i'm a cheap bastard -- but REL, Quad, Dali all tend to be more accurate and better powered without muddy boom -- REL drivers especially have "high excursion" and produce a "will my shelves come off the wall" "why are my doors opening by themselves" "ow my head and chest am I having a heart attack" quaking effect which can make some people like myself too nervous to enjoy the listening experience, so, not for everyone; I eventually swapped an old REL for a more sane Quad L
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QW3DorRXwwA
>>58601335
Thank you again.
>"will my shelves come off the wall"
>"why are my doors opening by themselves" >"ow my head and chest am I having a heart attack"
On reflection, perhaps the RELs aren't for me. I mostly listen to classical music so precision is more important than power. Also, it's a terraced house and I'm always nervous about pissing people off.
>>58601409
Two subs improves precision.
>>58601464
Unfortunately, my Denon only has a mono sub output. If I were going to replace it or add an extra amp, I'd probably get some floorstanders and ditch the sub entirely.
>>58601486
subwoofers also connect through normal speaker wire. you just have to fiddle 2 through the connection for it to work
>>58601486
>>58601534
Right, it's about placement. With 2 subs, if you place them right you can improve linearity and reduce peaks and valleys in the room.
>>58601534
Thanks. I think I need to do some more reading.
Are the JBL LSR305's still considered good speakers, and are they a good buy for the price ($130 per speaker)?
>>58600932
Yes. Looks like shite, however, as most anthrazit finishings do.
>>58601326
>implying everybody is a taste/craftsmanship cripple like you
That said, if you want to see actually good looking diy speakers, search your local forum, not the search engines image search.
>>58601602
Okay for a confined space or people who move a lot, but they have all the benefits and shortcomings of a small plastic box containing a limited amplifier packed right next to the acoustic driver.
And soon, someone who's heard 2 pairs of speakers in his entire life will post a single FR chart disregarding all other parameters and call it the second coming of Christ.
>>58602766
Well I do live in a confined space so I guess they're fine for me.
