why does linux lack professional software?
>>
>>58567131

Lightworks
>>
>>58567131
Because it has a pathetic 2.21% of the OS market share
>>
>>58567131
so server software is chopped liver then
>>
>>58567131
Why would you support such a miniscule portion of machines?

There are costs involved with supporting your application on more platforms. Not only in development time, but also in maintenance.

This is a pretty silly question, because the answer is obvious.

>>58567131
Define "professional software"

It's a common misconception that the average business makes use of Linux outside of websites.

Most SMBs are running Windows Server for LOB applications and industry standards like Active Directory and Exchange.
>>
>>58567131
It does?
All GIS I've had to work with had Linux releases
>>
>>58567131
It doesn't, it just lacks video games.

very disappointed by the lack of adobe products available for linux.
>>
>>58567395
Light works is meme tier garbage.
>>
>>58567131
By professional software I assume you mean tools for artists? Like photoshop and final cut pro.

Linux has a lot of professional software, the top tier stuff in fact, it's just backend software likes servers.
>>
>>58567811
Adobe is cancer
Worse than Applel

I wonder if Adoobie will make software for Linux when Apple throws in the towel on Mac.
>>
>>58567607
Many SMBs getting bad advice. The average SMB doesn't need active directory or exchange. Also many LOB applications running perfectly fine with Linux. It's the special snowflake Software, that insists on Windows.
We are going great with samba, LDAP and IBM Notes/Domino.

because linux devs are huge faggots that have to do everything via command line, including setup. it should be mandatory for every package to have a GUI.

Unreal Engine runs on Linux.

I think you meant Adobe Software
>>
Why does Windows lack professionalism?
>>
>>58567131
Linux has professional software. But not for liberal arts mouthbreathers.

If you worked in infosec, IT, science you would know.

Because it's shit made for retards.

people don't use active directory and exchange because of microsoft lock-in. people use active directory and exchange because they are objectively better than the alternatives.

Uh.. no. Cell phones alone make your assertion and your reputation null.

How do any of these relate to /g/? From what I see these all belong on /ic/, /p/, or /gd/.
/g/ proffessional software boils down to text editors/networking implementations/etc.

>>
>>58567595
It's true that there are costs involved.
And you pay this cost for each version of windows you support too.

This is why web applications are such a good idea for so many people.

> Support one environment only
> Which YOU control.
> Updates happen automatically
> Backups done by professionals on the backend instead of amateurs on the end user level
> Flat cost per period for end user so it's easier to budget the solutions

And these things work on Linux machines too.

CRM, BI, E-mail, calendars, budgeting, accounting, reporting software... These things all exist. Unless you're one of those people who think that Photoshop is a prerequisite to running a successful bakery, you're just plain wrong.

What exactly does SMBs need AD and Exchange for?

I mean yes, Exchange is not a bad email server, but why is a small-medium business running their own fucking email?

They are small-medium. They should get specialists to deal with that shit for them. Whatever that specialist uses is ultimately completely irrelevant. It's not something that they would care about.

What they do care about:
> Do I get my email?
> Fast?
> Securely?
> Without paying too much?

And AD?
Come on bro. An SMB would just use google drive or similar cloud storage to share files.
And send smaller files via email.

> Muh group video conferences needs Skype for Business!
Fuck no. Your group video conferences can use google hangouts.

> Muh audio chat!
Skype routinely shits the bed on such.
Discord is much better.

> Muh issue tracking
Atlassian stack for issues (test/helpdesk can talk directly to IT with it, which is nice.)

> CRM!
SuperOffice CRM, cloud license, done.
You're SMB, you don't want to have a large IT department.

> Microsoft Office!
... Office 365 if you NEED to use MS Office.
Other than that, for the 99% of use cases, LibreOffice actually does work. For some things it works objectively better than MS Office.
Calc won't shit the bed horrendously when you ask it to open a CSV file for example, but Excel... Depending on language settings, it totally will. And it won't tell the use it's confused either. And guess what? A lot of data sources in real life will export as CSV.

You don't NEED an MS stack to do business.
You can build a good business stack using MS, but you can do without them.
