Being a proficient professional does not imply that you know your way around computers

I can give you multiple examples, MD's, lawyers, accountants.

OK a Machine learning dev should know their way around computers, right, RIGHT?? No matey, thats not the way the world works.

Ever heard that phrase "doctor are the worst patients"? Well, after years of IT field work, lemme tell you, some devs are the worst IT users.

Or let me put it that in a mundane way: Being proficient and useful in one field of human knowledge doesnt imply that you can excel at another one. You know, like Michael Jordan sucking big time at golf

OP is asking for an explanation of the "conflicting" situation of some devs using macs.

So, some devs using macs doesnt automatically validate the rest of the userbase.

Or some devs using it changes my point of view on the platform? no, it does not.

If mac serves their purpose, good for them.

>>

I worked at a tech company that did all Macs. Here's the real reason.

Tech companies already know you as a programmer want a UNIX/Linux OS. OSX provides that. But buying all MacBooks for your employees WAAAYYY simplifies IT administration. Instead of having 5,000 people with different Linux distribution, everybody is just on one OS.

Security is another big issue at the corporate level. OSX arguably will be updated faster than any Linux distribution if a major security vulnerability is made public, which in many companies' cases can end up costing millions when a major bug is actually used as an exploit.

There are many more reasons companies use MacBooks, but when you get down to it, when you're equipping thousands of people who each cost your company 150k a year and carry around billions in intellectual property, you consider more things than initial laptop purchase cost.

As someone who works in the field, management loves to buy people overpriced toys. This is the tech industry, everyone here loves fancy gadgets. Macbooks just happen to be the most expensive and heavily marketed towards that segment so they eat that shit up. Personally I thought they were good 5-6 years ago when they removed the DVD drive and added hidpi displays, but the build quality has declined a lot lately. I would probably recommend to new developers to get a windows machine these days.

The answer is that they use the MBP because it is aesthetic, easy to use, and they remotely access dozens of machines with various OSes to work via SSH and such. When not remotely accessing various machines running various OSes they can use the MBP to code, text edit, email, etc.

tl;dr MBP is a great platform for getting simple tasks done as well as remotely accessing other machines while working on projects.

They don't make a hobby of fastening graphics cards into their motherboards, of discussing the minute differences between the most recently released consumer-grade random access memory sticks, of error-message deciphering. They are focused on an end goal -- the means to these ends are secondary. That's why practically anyone worth their salt, focused on the act of creation, of envisioning, of bringing new things into reality, prefers a Macintosh machine.

Very true, except 99.5% of those who use mac just spends time on facebook, no value "artistic" and unimportant shit. That doesn't make using a mac is elite.

I know its bait but If i take your post seriously, a 2g phone is for serious business because terrorists actually get their job done instead of posting on 4chan and facebook and missing bomb calls.

AI engineers don't actually work on AI. They take the researcher's work and they put it on the website or make a demo around it, etc. Now that you know, you won't do that mistake again. The more you know! TM!

And an additional protip. Deepmind is very, very far from cutting edge on average. They have gems like alphago, DRAW and the NTM, but the great majority of their work is jiwei li submitting the exact, same, identical paper every 2 months, for example. Also take the dnc. It's literally just a shitty version of the dntm and isn't even remotely deserving of the nature publication it got.

Your ads are delivered according to deep learning algorithms.
Google search engine? Powered by deep learning.
OCR? Almost definitely powered by deep learning.
When you deposit your cheque at the bank and it knows the amount, that's deep learning too.
Google Allo, cortana, siri and maluuba use deep learning.
Self-driving cars are exclusively deep learning but we all know you don't use them.
Ever livechatted with sales rep lately? I can guarantee you they were using deep learning for at least the first half of your conversation.
Got a scanning app on your phone? Deep learning.
Face detection, such as for auto-focus? Deep learning.
Your antivirus also uses deep learning for heuristic threat detection.
Google translate is deep learning.
Photo applications like google's use deep learning.

It is automatic reflex to carry out apple and show off and fool people. Nobody wants to show off their riced linux unless it is anonymous space like 4chan.

data "scientist" here

I used a MBP for 7 years, spending 99% of my time in Chrome and iTerm2. I switched one day when I realized that I felt physically relieved when I SSH'd into a box on EC2 and used apt. I have flinch reflex from using homebrew, because it is such garbage. It is the second-worst "package" "manager" after pip.

Now I'm running 99% of the exact same shit on a T460 in 16.04 LTS like a *nix pleb and loving every minute.

tl;dr 99% of us outside of game dev could probably get by with a Chromebook that had vim and a terminal, so just use Ubuntu

your point isn't wrong as much as it is completely irrelevant to the issue at hand, because MDs and lawyers and accountants do not have to program, yet devs do have to program, and programming is the essence of IT.

Actually, unlike macOS' kernel which is a patchwork of different kernels glued together, Linux was built from the ground up and is by a huge margin the most used kernel in the world.

Literally this. The level of support Apple offer is unmatched by another other competitor, Linux or windows based. Get a company that sells high quality hardware, with walk in shops near by, and I guarantee you no one will care about the os

You have to remember that most applications used in business settings are available on more than one os
