I am very torn whether i should run Linux or Windows.

Windows just works but those damn updates makes my computer restart whenever i leave it powered on with some important software running, making me lose work.

Whenever i want to watch netflix on my laptop with my gf we have to wait 10 minutes to start that piece of shit because windows is applying updates. Yes i use a SSD.

Why isn't there a decent consumer OS? I just need Chrome, Spotify, Eclipse, Skype and an office suite.

>>
>>58558598
Im currently running Windows 10. I dont want my PC to automatically install a new OS whenever i leave it on which happens with Windows 7 ffs

Already sold my Chromebook because the linux drivers for the touchpad was so shit and ChromeOS is shit
>>
Why not disable the updates

Open control panel go to admin tools
Open services then go down to windows update stop the service then right click on it hit properties then by startup type make it say disabled then hit apply
>>
> Windows just works
> those damn updates makes my computer restart, making me lose work
Sounds like it's not really working for you if it does things you don't want and you can't stop it. In fact it sounds like Microsoft has ultimate control over what software runs on your computer.

> Netflix
> Chrome
> Spotify
> Skype
Try and replace all of these if you care about freedom in your computing, but you can do that before or after switching to Linux since they and their open-source replacements are mostly cross platform.
>>
>>58558684
wtf you can do that?

If you're too stupid to disable automatic updates, stay away from Linux. You'll only end up making a "hurr fell for the linux meme shit sux" thread.

just installed a noob distro, everything all set up for you, most software that's not on Linux there are linux or browser-based alternatives, if not just use Wine. if you don't have to fiddle with anything most noob distros will do fine, and they are also easy to troubleshoot, just google the issue and there's a million people who are there to help.

if that's true it's probably distro based and only on some shit like Ubuntu. Why wouldn't you be able to? literally Google it and follow a fucking guide. that's such an obscure use case I don't think it's that big a deal
>>

It's a fucking big deal when every user friendly linux distro has a slow as fuck scroll speed of 1-3 lines and none of them offers a simple GUI to change it
>>
>>58558576

Don't be a moron and disable that update feature if you hate it so much. There are ways, I don't care about it myself but you can easily do it, if only with the policy settings feature which is easily better than what linuxtards pretend to have as system configuration contrary to popular belief.

Stop using netflix and get what you need directly.

Problems le solved.

Use whatever you want, that meets the needs you require of a PC. It sounds like Linux very much would meet most of those needs, and you can always run Windows in a VM if you just happen to need Windows software with no viable FOSS equivalent. Gaming is about the only thing you still absolutely need Windows for, but that's less true today than it was a year ago. On the other hand Windows too will meet your needs, and if you are willing to put up with it's more annoying aspects, that's fine too. Whatever you feel works best for you.

>I am very torn

I guess I was too at one point. I was still into gaming back then though. Once I lost interest in gaming I gave Mint Linux a try. I'd dual booted Linux before, but would always end up playing with it for a few days or weeks, and then retreating back to Windows. I used Mint exclusively, and after a month or so I no longer missed Windows. Once I did use Windows again (cleaning crap off of my cousin's laptop) I found it absolutely painful to use.

The point is that replacing Windows with something else isn't as big of a deal as you expect, aside from gaming. You are merely comfortable with Windows, despite clearly being dissatisfied with it. You expect moving to Linux to disrupt that comfort, and be a hassle, and it really doesn't have to be. Just don't try jumping into Linux with something like Arch or Slackware, because they are a completely different experience than you're used to. So-called beginner distros "just work" and there isn't really too much to learn about using them. If you've used Windows or Mac, then you already have a fairly good grasp on how to use Linux as a desktop. You don't ever have to worry about using a terminal and all that stuff if you don't want to, although it can be very worthwhile to learn at some point.

I actually have a dualboot with Linux Mint on my main computer but i have been using Windows only for the past two years.

Didn't read thread, but install Linux Mint Cinnamon in a VM (Vitualbox) and check how it works.
All you listed works there out of the box or is pre-installed. As a Windows user the DE Cinnamon will be the best for you. (Take Chromium in the software center instead Chrome you can sync the Google account there too.)
And if you have a problem you will find a solution online. Don't install Solus or Elementary or Arch or Gentoo or so. Just trust me and do this. Later you may dual boot. If you learned how to handle and customize your Linux OS you will be able to install and use an advanced OS. (Which is absolutely not necessary if you like Linux Mint and everything works. Never forget that /g/ and its memes has nothing to do with the reality.)
>>
>>58561359
When I have time im gonna install Ubuntu Mate in virtualbox.

>(Take Chromium in the software center instead Chrome you can sync the Google account there too.)
Last time i tried Chromium on Linux I spent 30 minutes without success trying to install flash in order to be able to watch streams, simply apt-get install or using the software center didn't work :/ (Chrome has flash builtin and automatically updates without disturbing me)

I've been using linux only for the exact same reasons lol.

I booted into my windows partition 2 days ago, thought I'd do some updates just in case, ya know, maintenance. After waiting for 30 minutes looking at the screen saying 'searching for updates' I thought, nah fuck this, back to comfy linux.

It's normal to take 30 minutes due to the advanced calculations behind it

Not sure about him, but when I have Linux a try, I had a lot of difficulty with printing consistently. If I was connected to a network printer for a long time, I would not be able to print. Restarting the printer did nothing. Imagine every time you wanted to print something you needed to reboot. I don't care how fast your boot times are, it's obnoxious. I tried 3 different distros with the same result. Googling did not give me a long term solution, just the reboot trick.
>>
>>58561953
>Imagine every time you wanted to print something you needed to reboot.

Yes, that would be very annoying. The only printer I've ever tried worked out of the box on linux. On windows I had to download and install drivers and of course it came with toolbars and/or other shitware. And you know, since I've started using Linux instead of windows, whenever I need hardware or anything, like a usb headset last week, I just check what works well with linux before I buy. Even though I've never come across anything that didn't work, it puts my mind at ease.
>>
>>58562101
>I just check what works well with linux before I buy
You actually have to do that with linux???
>>
>>58562101
While I agree that is a good approach to take, I didn't really have that option at the time. And that's part of linux's problem really. I remember a time when printing sucked " on Windows, and those few months I tried to use Linux gave me flashbacks. Like stressed out Vietnam flashbacks.
>>
>>58558784
this is so poor in a desktop OS

>Even though I've never come across anything that didn't work, it puts my mind at ease.
Reading is hard isn't it, wincuck?
>>
>>58560258
Spotify is natively available for linux
>>
>>58562181
Meh, printing still sucks on windows in my experience. I guess it just depends on your printer, not so much on your OS. But yes, most companies write drivers for windows only.
>>
>>58562151
No. On the other hand, you DO have to check if something works if you're running Windows 7/8.
>>
Printing is pretty easy if you do some reading, the process to get it working for any printer that has a linux driver is to install cups, install your driver and dependencies.

Or use a distro that comes with cups or a printserver setup, and install your driver. I've not had problems with printers in years.
>>
>>58558576
Install ZorinOS, Mint or Ubuntu and never look back. Skype is shit anyway, install messenger for desktop.
>>
>>58562151
You have to do that with Windows too if you build your own PC. Obviously, if you buy a prebuilt or a laptop that comes with Windows already installed, it's going to (or supposed to) work well with Linux. If you buy a computer that comes with Linux installed, it's going to work well with Linux. See how that works?

>>
>>58562543
More hardware works with Linux, actually. Newer consumerist hardware doesn't work that well as drivers are usually first built for windows, but anything with the latest kernel should support more recent hardware out of the box, which can't be said for windows.
>>
>>58562543
that is not as hard as you probably think it is

There's pros and cons to everything. With Windows you get better software compatibility but you also get surveillance, forced updates, progressive system lag, useless error messages, and greater susceptibility to malware.

With Linux you get a more secure and private OS, but it won't run everything that Windows would and it can be hard for a newbie.

Gotta make your tradeoff somewhere.
>>
>>58558576

Just disable Update function via Group Policies editor. Unless you run Home version, then you are screwed.

Holy shit, people complain about updates yet leave them running and do nothing about configuring or disabling them. Its like wanting to have control over your PC and refusing to take it. You want it to be done for you? Too bad, Linux distros wont configure itself to suit your needs either.
>>
>>58562845
There have been tons of people complaining about their old tech not working under win10, but I guess they're all shilling for linux, or something.
>>
>>58558576
Install solus anon, blows all other distros out of the water in terms of ease of use and consistency/polish. I'm not even memeing, everyone thinks solus is a meme because it gets shilled so hard but the people shilling it are the ones who are using it and enjoying it.
Ditched Ubuntu for solus and now all the machines I own are running solus/windows dual booted.
Don't really know how else to convince you but solus honestly made me love Linux again. It's more polished than both windows and Ubuntu imo. It's a shame everyone on this board assumes it's just a meme distros because they're missing out.
>>
>>58558576
Chrome works natively on Linux, just download the rpm or deb from googles site. I'm pretty sure there are several Linux spotify clients, eclipse had a native Linux version as far as I know, and I know for a fact that Skype has a native Linux version. Libreoffice is a pretty good free office suite and you could look into wps office suite.

>>58563287
