Ubuntu GNOME 16.04. Yes, I'm one of the three people in the world who actually likes GNOME.
But it's giving me some annoying bugs on my laptop, like how if I leave Firefox open for more than a minute or two, the sound will stop working in every other program until I restart. Also, the Japanese IME just stopped working all of a sudden. This stuff still happens in Cinnamon, so it's not a GNOME thing. Would it happen in vanilla Ubuntu, do you think? I've been considering giving Unity a chance because of how much I like GNOME.

I just installed arch as a n00b, and I'm wondering, is it just me, or has everything about how its organized changed drastically at some recent point? Almost everything I try to install fucks up at some point. It never just works. And the instructions, while thorough, often say things like "copy x file to your config directory, located here: <directory that doesn't exist on my system>" Then, after tons of trying a bunch of random tweaks I see online, I can get stuff to work, but I persistently get the feeling that I'm reverse-engineering the way archlinux used to be set up, and what most packages, git programs, tutorials etc refer to when giving instructions. Am I correct in thinking this? Or am I just inexperienced?

>How is that zenbook? Does the fanless m3 model really perform as expected? Any build quality issues? It looks almost to good to be true for that price imo

It's pretty great. I don't know how it performs under W10 because I installed Linux on it the second I received it. Under Linux, the performance is fantastic. It doesn't get hot and the battery really does last for about 10 hours. If you're doing basic stuff like watching high resolution videos or playing old games on emulators, it does what it's supposed to. I can even hook it up to a 4k tv and it'll power both screens without issue. Apple isn't the only one who can take full advantage of the Core m3. I honestly think it's the best CPU for any laptop. Zero moving parts is the way to go.

There was an issue with the keys that manage screen brightness not working but a quick edit in a config file fixes that. You can find the solution on Google. The touchscreen is actually fantastic, I can use a stylus to draw stuff in Gimp, however this works well only under Wayland. Under X.org, the touchscreen is pretty inaccurate and a pain in the ass. The only issue that can't be fixed with a bit of configuration or using the right software is with the touchpad. Most of the time, it works fine but sometimes for some unknown reason it gets all wonky and the cursor decides to go where it please. I have no idea what triggers that but fortunately it only lasts for a few seconds before it behaves normally again. When I was shopping around for a new laptop, I was looking for something to replace my MBP. I didn't really like the direction Apple is going with their laptops so I decided to look for alternatives and found the Zenbook Flip(the fanless m3 model) which is basically a Macbook clone with a touchscreen. I got it at a discount for about $600 and at that price, it is most certainly worth it. It's not perfect but considering the alternative is like $1500 and has only one port, I'd say it's a steal.

Are you saying that this linux can run on a computer without windows underneath it, at all ? As in, without a boot disk, without any drivers, and without any services ?

That sounds preposterous to me.

If it were true (and I doubt it), then companies would be selling computers without a windows. This clearly is not happening, so there must be some error in your calculations. I hope you realise that windows is more than just Office ? Its a whole system that runs the computer from start to finish, and that is a very difficult thing to acheive. A lot of people dont realise this.

Microsoft just spent $9 billion and many years to create Vista, so it does not sound reasonable that some new alternative could just snap into existence overnight like that. It would take billions of dollars and a massive effort to achieve. IBM tried, and spent a huge amount of money developing OS/2 but could never keep up with Windows. Apple tried to create their own system for years, but finally gave up recently and moved to Intel and Microsoft.

Its just not possible that a freeware like the Linux could be extended to the point where it runs the entire computer fron start to finish, without using some of the more critical parts of windows. Not possible.

I think you need to re-examine your assumptions.

I've found Arch worse than Ubuntu with ~the same upgrade frequency. I usually update most of my additional VM at the same time.

Arch died like every 6 months within the last two years, particularly if that was the only upgrade within those months they just often forget how they break shit and pacman with it's many dependencies.

One day it's the package manager not having a sane upgrade path into a new signature system, another time it doesn't complete one of its dependencies, yet another time it fucked grub or the kernel, and then it fucked something essential to the init... There is almost always something going wrong, and I do not have a particularly complex setup on that VM.

Not to say it's not possible that Ubuntu was worse for you, but ultimately I found arch putting up a relatively shamefur display regardless. Yea, it was recoverable from live and with config hacks that disabled signatures altogether and stuff - pain in the arse though.

i suppose it can vary quite wildly

i mean, i've been using this same arch install since before they switched to systemd (over 4 years ago now), i find it difficult to believe people are having their install trashed as often/easily as they say

my only guess is they're getting caught on a small snag, which they assume is something big and give up before really looking into it
i've seen that a lot in general, people reinstalling their os completely because they did something like trash GRUB

Kali with gnome.
This is my Dads I personally have arch/Debian, and Bunsen labs on my home laptop.
So far I'm settling for debian/bunsenlabs and waning on the arch with blackarch keyring.

B-but...the beginning is hard, we can start on something else than ubuntu or gentoo... Find it normal to make such errors (yes it happened, so what?!)
It's juste one time, and after come the time to learn how to use recovery for the grub uninstall/reinstall, i think it happened to a lot of people.
Jumping to linux the first time is hard.

Currently on Ubuntu 16.04.

But I've been distro hopping for months - tried out Antergos, Linux Mint, etc.
But then I grew tired of that and settled with a stable distro.
