Comp sci student here. What should I pursue between Mobile(iOs &Android) and Web Back&Front

Im looking at 2 things:
-jobs available
-salary
>>
html, css and a bit java
>>
>>58545746
Pretty much this. You could try to learn a thing or two about Javascript too.
>>

Web design isn't a bad career field, but if that's what he wants to do he shouldn't be wasting his time with learning programming, computer architecture, and a shitload of mathematics.
>>
>study CS
>pursue a future in webdev and mobile development

This is why CS is a meme.
>>
>>58546094

OP here

Im not 'murrican, here CS is not theory or web design, its programming from assembly to high level plus computer architecture and high level math.

People actually study something that has "science" in the name only to churn out shitty mobile applications afterwards?

Isn't it like studying biology to become a gardener?

job availability:
nil to none for a new guy. everybody and their mothers studied cs.

salary:
nil to none.
there are thousands more prospective employees, all with more experience than you, all with more interesting and relevant portfolios than you, and they are all willing to work for less than you are.

basically, you're fucked. you should have gone into network security.
>>
>>58545886
Irrelevant. Those, plus JavaScript, are the primary tools of web dev.

If you don't want to be a "liberal female", then choose a different field
>>
>>58547929
Honestly, why do people like you bother posting garbage like this?
>>
>>58548215
because you're a fucking idiot and you're going to be making a shit salary, constantly working unpaid overtime doing shit work that you're not going to enjoy.

you fucked up your life.
>>

Do it quickly before the indians get it too
>>
>>58548280
You're not responding to OP btw. I make $68k a year in Houston, TX (low CoL) and I NEVER work over time.

The work is pretty boring, can't disagree with you there, but there are more opportunities that open with every year of experience. There are dozens of programming jobs that get posted everyday in Houston alone.

I never understand why people bitch about no jobs
>>
>>58548425
>I live in this c-list american city that is nothing but tech startups and I'm just littered with jobs!
>God why does everybody bitch about nojobs? fucking idiots all of them!
>>
>>58545722
None of those.
>>
>>58548554
If by tech startups you mean huge oil and gas industry in addition to medical industry, I guess.

Regardless, it's not difficult to move. I did it. This is my first year living in Houston. The distance may differ for each person, but you aren't locked to some shit city with no opportunities. I'm sure you'll come up with some excuse though
>>
>>58548652
why would i ever want to live in a major american city that's as culturally dead as houston? especially to work a shitty job that i didn't get a degree for and i have zero interest in doing?
>>

forgot to add, no I don't lack opportunities because im not a dipshit who chose the basic bitch degree relating to computers.
>>
>>58548735
I'm not trying to convince you to do that at all. I didn't say anyone should move to Houston.

The fact that you thought it was mostly a tech startup city tells me you know nothing about the city or the culture. You just sound like a butthurt, pathetic person using anonymity to spew rage. Sorry your life sucks, but there are plenty of us CS grads doing well
>>
>>58548746

Houston cost of living is not nearly what other major cities in the US are.

Plus I technically live in a city just outside of Houston limits, so even cheaper. My commute is 20 minutes, but I don't really mind it
>>
>>58548967
Yeah I live in Detroit, we're way cheaper than you and no $68k is still not "making" it at all. I make $70k doing infosec, pay ~$440 for rent for a 2k sqft apartment and I don't consider myself making it at all.

Sub 6 figures is embarrassing, but not much you can do in this oversaturated workforce.
>>
That's fair if your definition is different. You do have a state and city tax to pay though, so $70k is less than $68k here.

This is my first year out of college and I'm on pace to save $30k this year, so I consider myself doing well

but these aren't me:
>>58549359
>>58549515

detroit has a reputation but it's changed a lot in the past 7 years. its no longer a warzone, especially the actual city, but its in an identity crisis.

half of the city is like a weird mishmash of portland, montreal and sanfran and the other half is disgruntled baby boomers waiting for the auto industry to come back and "save" the city (which is never going to happen blue collar detroit is fucking dead)
>>
>>58548735
>implying American culture is even a thing
This place is a shithole void of culture outside of trying to be black so no one picks a fight with you. The culture is to be a nigger.
>>
>>58549612
There's a world of difference between "making it" and "getting by". $60k is not even close to "making it" and you're fucking retarded if you think there's an ounce of entitlement in that. You just have a fundamental lack of understanding of a corporate environment.

This whole thread is pretty awful now. We all clearly have different definitions of successful and there seems to be a large difference between American/not American definitions of CS degrees.

Where I live, there are plenty of CS/web dev/IT/embedded jobs that pay well (I make $68k w/ many $100k+) with affordable living (my house is 3k sq ft @300k). Take that as you want, as that is my situation, but I'm done arguing.

I'll finish my CS degree in February. I have no work experience in CS, I've only worked summer jobs. I know C++, a little bit of front end and a little bit of Android and Java. I'm not counting stuff like Bash, Perl or Matlab, which I had in my classes, because I'm not using them frequently or haven't been using them in a few months.

What should I focus on in order to get good job with perspectives to earn decent amount of money?

I live in Poland if that helps.

Speaks the truth. Most of the country starts that low for help desk. My first help desk job was $10/hr.

I just fucking hated doing it. Being the guy that maintains the stuff that allows the company to do work and gets shit on by every person in the company, while only making more than a fraction of the company.
>>
>>58549989
kinda.

i mean if you get creative you might find a way to make it work.

my advice? move south to Austria. you're prolly gonna make a shitload more comparatively (enough to own a car on top of what you want), and you're close enough to drive and visit your buds in the homeland for the weekend or whatever.
>>
>>58549955
You're telling me man, I used to live in SF/Bay Area. At least down here for $1000 I won't live in a 200sq/ft closet.

You sound pretty hostile, mate. You think there are no people in Western Europe who don't like those who want to migrate?

I'll probably move to Switzerland, because my gf's family lives there, but I think like the idea of Eastern European coming to your country isn't pleasant for you.
>>
>>58550068
Thats why i like living in jacksonville. $850 for a nice 770 sq ft apartment in the city. Also jacksonville voted red in the electiob and isnt full of retarded libcunts and faggots like san fran. I honestly would never move to california. San diego os nice to visit though, i didnt like san fran much. Ita cold there in the summer.
>>
>>58550088
Americans are pretty sick of immigration. We get tired of competing with the entire world for a living wage.
>>
>>58550061
I know German, what could make moving easier, but I guess I have to get some experience here first.

Still I have to figure out if I should look for Android dev job, front end or maybe something entirely different.
I'm really open to anything. I could do anything in IT, because I do interesting things after work.

I just want a quiet life.
>>
>>58550088
he's memeing because eastern europeans are notorious for immigrating and making already saturated markets even worse.

slavs have yet to realize they can do the same to america so we're trying to keep this shit on lock.
>>
>>58550128
it doesnt help that we dont subsidize education with our taxes so you have EU nerds coming here with very little debt while our own home grown graduates are scrambling for anything so they can pay their loans before they default.
>>
>>58550128
I find it funny, when you're talking about competing for a living wage.

A lot of people here in IT earn about 25 dollars per hour and GTX 1080 costs about 700 dollars.
Here people earn about 25 złoty, which is slightly above 6 dollars, and GTX 1080 costs about 900 dollars.

Living in US is like playing on easy.
>>
>>58550176

>>
>>58550132

dont move to detroit tho. this is a "cool" city and thus is anything but quiet.

fun as fuck if you're into parties and art and drugs and like to mix all 3

austria sounds like your best bet my dude.
>>
>>58550176
no living in the US is like choose Wizard

you start out weak as shit and completely useless. if you get sick or injured you're basically fucked. you rack up an insane amount of student loans for your degrees and you have to fight in what is basically a giant mosh pit to get even the most basic job.

a majority of the population fails somewhere along those lines and ends up working some piece of shit proletariat hourly wage job and lives in a trailer or some shit for the rest of their life.

but once you have become established, once you have developed a rhythm and gained experience, that's when the huge effort to arrive pays off.
>>
>>58550206
I think you mistyped Detroit with different city. Detroit lies in USA, not Austria, which you are probably aware of.

And who's not into parties, art and drugs?
>>
>>58550201
I could buy a house probably faster than you, but it would be almost empty, because everything is expensive as fuck.
>>
>>58550286
no i meant detroit as in if you were still thinking about moving to the usa as an option, dont move here.

i once knew a girl in vienna, she liked the city and it seemed like a comfy life. dunno about programming opportunities, most of the city seems to be chemistry stuff.

>And who's not into parties, art and drugs?
a lot of posters on this website. plus you said you wanted a quiet life, going to a warehouse and tripping while harsh noise is blaring over a jury rigged sound system isn't really a quiet life imo.
>>

CS is all about learning theory plus a few practical examples and then using the knowledge in real life. It is assumed that if you know the theory of programming languages and you have some experience with real languages then you will easily be able to learn any prog language/framework.

How the fuck do you still not know what to do after 3 fucking years of studying?

I also live in Poland if that helps.

Nice trips.

Everyone in tech industry is being abused, if you can start your own company that's the only road to success.
Lots of people brag about their IQ and uni but end up working for a boss and making less than the boss does IF they were smart they came up with a idea and start their own shit.
It's never to late to start your own company and build something up that could be worth more than you'll ever earn.
