This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

I'm pondering encryption in the not-so-remote event some Tyrone might size possession of my stuff.

I have an SSD installed on my laptop. Windows10 (in b4 that's botnet already...) + SadyBridge 2630QM.

How would this work? Bitlocker would use AES algorithm, and my Core i7 would crunch with RELATIVE easy that algorithm, performing encryption and decryption, using its native set of instructions? is this overall mechanism correct?
Am i missing something?

What are the drawbacks? Like, would my system turn out to be INCREDIBLY slow? Would it suck a LOT more power?

>unironically living around niggers
I'd be more concerned about getting shot/stabbed/gang bashed than your /d/ folder being seen m8.
>>
>>58526848
there is no point in using windows and encrypting it, probably backdoored
>>
>>58526938
this.

If you're using windows (same with mac probably), then there is no point in encrypting data anymore if the unencrypted data has ever been stored on the SSD. Bitlocker is backdoored too so refrain from using it.
>>
>>58526938
>>58527099

Tyrone doesn't have access to the backdoor if it exists you autist
>>
>>58527099
>>58526938

Any state agency already knows everything about my bank accounts, the problem is not that. It is preventing Tyrone from getting my data, and having any criminal to know everything about my life.
>>
>>58526848
VeraCrypt it.

>Bitlocker would use AES algorithm, and my Core i7 would crunch with RELATIVE easy that algorithm, performing encryption and decryption, using its native set of instructions?

Yes. With AES-ni, you won't see heavy overhead for disk operations.

>What are the drawbacks? Like, would my system turn out to be INCREDIBLY slow?

Not on modern i5/i7 CPUs. Even on my Haswell Celeron with no AES-ni, I could hit 300MB/s on an encrypted SSD.

>Would it suck a LOT more power?
No
>>
>>58527115
If you want to hide your shit from a nigger like Tyrone, you can rely on the fact that he's pretty fucking dumb and that he won't know how to get around the windows lock screen, so there's no need to encrypt anything.
>>
>>58526876
>gang bashed
lol fucking euroshits ..
>>
All my laptops with SSDs are encrypted and I've never had any issues with it. No performance issues.

I have a Haswell with encrypted M2 SSD. I don't notice any difference.
>>
>>58527179
Thanks.

>VeraCrypt
i also thought everything out of truecrypt was dead.
>>
>>58527260
TrueCrypt actually works nicer than Veracrypt in my opinion.
Veracrypt might be more secure, but Truecrypt just works and is quite fast.

That said, I switched from Truecrypt to Veracrypt yesterday.
>>
>>58527241
he didn't mention privacy at all, you autistic cancer.
>>58526848
Bitlocker will be fine. You won't see any performance degradation.
Also what SSD do you have? Maybe it has FDE via ATA password?
>>
> slowing down a drive because of his tinfoil hat

nobody gives a shit about your data sperg
>>
No need to slow down a drive, just encrypt what you need to encrypt, e.g. passes.
>>
>>58526848
First thing you have to take into account is that encryption will only save you in case of you lost you device, or if anyone tries to access your PC physically without your consent.

Second Bitlocker is ok what the basic mortal needs, they added a new encryption algorith in Windows 10 16511 (https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/itpro/windows/whats-new/whats-new-windows-10-version-1507-and-1511)

Last but not least, make sure you have TPM module, dont do the USB shit you can loose it break it w/e. As a Bonus do Bitlocker with PIN (more info here http://www.howtogeek.com/262720/how-to-enable-a-pre-boot-bitlocker-pin-on-windows/) this will make you to insert a pin everything you start your machine. I mainly use this in my company laptop.

My ssd is made by an obscure industrial equipment manufacturer, with a siliconmotion SM2246EN controller which says:
>AES 128/256 and Trusted Computing Group (TCG) Opal full-drive encryption*
>>
just put passes into an 128bit encrypted 7z file, no need to shit on the entire drive, nobody needs to encrypt basic windows files for no reason.
>>
>>58527433
Forgot to mention that you need to configure the GPO BEFORE you encrypt the disk (otherwise you need to decrypt it and encrypt it again). Also the new encryption will be rendered useless if you use a inferior build of Windows 10 Build 1511 in any other PC, they are unable to to read this new encryption, use this new encryption if all your PC's are Windows 10 1511 and above.
>>
>>58527444

*256bit even
>>
>>58527440
good. Just set a password on your HDD in BIOS and it's done.
Remember to set both master and user passwords.
>>
>>58527444
Unpractical. I don't have files on my computer for the sole purpose of archiving, i actually work with them.

>>58527425
I cannot be asked to manage my filesystem to the point where (e.g.) i put my email archiving folders to an encrypted folder\partition and so on.

I have an encrypted SSD on an X200.

I am using Ubuntu's native encryption.

it is an old x200 with a Intel® Core™2 Duo CPU P8700 @ 2.53GHz × 2 processor.

Did I dun goofd and slowing my shit up just to keep my porn stash safe?
>>
>>58527519
Depends on what kind of porn you're storing :^)
>>
>>58527575
Actually boring shit.

But there is some homemade porn of me and my gf, and I dont want tyrone to upload it to WORLDSTAR YO
>>
>>58527596

You could just encrypt a folder.
>>
>>58527485

You could encrypt a folder, not the whole fucking thing, including notepad.exe for no reason at all.
>>
>>58527646
>>58527596
You SHOULD encrypt the folder so if your computer gets ever hacked your gf's porn stays safe
>>
>>58527680
>>58527646
Yeah I figured so.

Is it possible to just unencrypt your shit up (Ubuntu)?
>>
>>58527696
I don't know, sorry.
>>
>>58527179
>Using a honeypot unaudited encryption
Ayy lmao
>>

>dat yellow cable

TS/SCI nigga
>>
>>58526848
your cpu has h/w accel. AES so you will see maybe a 1% overall performance drop on super high i/o but for day to day use you wouldnt notice it at all. so yeah go ahead and encrypt if you want to.
>>
>>58527433
>Last but not least, make sure you have TPM module, dont do the USB shit you can loose it break it w/e.

yea... no TPM for my glorious 2011 SandyBridge device.
>>
THE MEMES WERE REAL!

bitlocker first try gave me this:

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/2d7bd961-5ded-42b9-996e-945bd63e0a15/bitlocker-screen-is-orange-with-white-lines?forum=win10itprogeneral

thanks god i was not-stupid enough to understand that an orang white-stripped screen was in effect the bitlocker password screen.

Punching the password on the keyboard was enough to pass this obstacle.

For the rest, thanks anybody for the advises.
