the only way to build it from the repository is to gimp it and make it insecure and nobody has bothered to actually fix it in the years since it's been released

there's really no such thing as "too old" when it comes to actual practical use, it's just a different, more classical way of doing things that may appeal to what you do or may not

as far as actual disadvantages, it's really poorly documented and thus not really as convenient to configure the way you'd like it, it can also be unstable depending on what operating system you try to run it on and I've had problems with it just up and dropping settings or fucking up its configuration in ways that are hard to diagnose

I don't know. I haven't really optimized and I use some Gnome-parts in the background as well.
But I think it's around 150-200MB. I've got 16gb on my laptop, so it doesn't matter at all.
However, opening a browser (opera 12 :P) is easily 500MB, so why bother optimizing.

I think that's more of a "problem" with GTK which is very opinionated.

But I think XFCE is very customisable but not how other DE are and that's a good thing

For example XFCE is the only current X DE that is keeping the panel/applet tradition which in my opinion is much better and much more powerful than a dock-like or taskbar-like interface. And it's a tradition that's unmistakeably UNIX and Linux.

Too bad GNOME3, Cinnamon, etc dropped this tradition to mindlessly mimic Mac OS X and Windows interfaces
