ITT everything about Usenet.

I am looking for a newsreader, how would you reate slrn ( + slrnpull + slrnface), trn and Pan? Something like slrn > trn > Pan.

Also, I've hear mutt can be a newsreader too. Same, how would you rate it compared to the others?
>>
I too can be autistic sometimes.
>>
>>58523216
fuck off
>>
>>58523193
Is it possible to connect to usenet without paying for a service provider? Why can't I talk to NNTP news servers directly?
>>
>>58523292
Check for leafnode or INN (which is harder but with more features), they are servers to connect to Usenet directly. You'll need to configure the servers yourself.

I'll start by using eternal september myself, once I decide which client to spent my time on.
>>
I've got a usenet subscription, but only use it for sabnzbd. What am I missing?
>>
>>58523332
Thanks, thats exactly what I was looking for.
I haven't been on usenet in a long time, whats it like these days? Is it mostly filesharing or is there discussion?
>>
>>58523386
np, I am not even on usenet yet but many people told me the discussion is great there and is why I look on alternatives like those servers.

>>58523361
Everyone is saying you find interesting information there, first hand and before anywhere else, and many more tech literates than regular forums.

Usenet with SABnzbd was comfy as fuck back in 2010 as I remember. Huge data retention compared to private torrent trackers.

I guess it is still the same
>>
do people still use this shit? i thought it would have died out by now. my isp used to have free access to newshosting but that ended years ago sadly
>>
I tried a usenet about a year ago and it's dead. I couldn't find a single thing worth downloading, and everything was gunked up with viruses like goddamn Kazaa.
>>
>>58524956
For tv shows is plenty, I guess the scene gathers around usenet isn't?
>>
Plebs DogNZB and PFMonkey is the way to go with NZBGet and Sonarr.

Almost everything from movies and TV private trackers is uploaded there in one place.
>>
>>58525214
>DogNZB and PFMonkey
didn't knew of those
>>
USENET MORE LIKE BOTNET, RIGHT?
>>
>>58525770
They’re probably the best private usenet indexers out there.
>>
>>58525837
thanks
>>
usenet == pedophiles

prove me wrong, you can't
>>
>>58523193
Usenet is kick ass and will make a comeback. Non-binary traffic has been increasing year on year for 4-5 years now. People have had enough of faggot mods.
>>
>>58525864
there's nothing wrong about pedosexuality, anon
it's completely normal
>>
>>58523193
Holy shit this is even more autistic than the mcp+macodoflkfofjlwkfjwjfosbnsbfkpcpopp bullshit
>>
Enjoy your eternal september 1993

>mfw we gave up on clean text interfaces for communication and went towards bloated shit

Not even old, but I like these methods of communication much more than the web as it now is.

fuck off troll

wouldn't be a usenet thread without the necessary usenet spergs insisting he knows how the internet should be run

I'm genuinely curious if this exists on usenet as well, or we only see the ostracized shits show up everywhere else?

>mfw I member member member ehhh I don't really member but I will just member how I want it to have been, why can't we go back, ehhh, that's because it never really happened, ehhh
>>
>>58529803
What are you even on?
I don't know what is your problem but you should seek psychological attention. Or you know, stop trolling.
>>
>>58530175
Every usenet thread I've ever been in very quickly went in a variation of one of the following:

"all other websites must be like usenet"
"I was here first so everyone has to do what I say"
"we must delete all other websites because they challenge me when I visit them and I get scared"

then nothing changes and the thread is remade waiting for that special someone else from usenet to come along and circlejerk for 50-80 posts about how cool the internet used to be 20 years ago except they can't remember any particular detail about it (because it happened 20 years ago)

usenet is like a place filled with IRC admins who have banned all their users
>>
>>58530291
Well, that is like your opinion. You can stop now.
>>
>>58529803
Usenet and the internet are both different things. Perhaps you confused the web and the internet (also two different things) by mistake?

And what exactly is wrong with discussing the positives of Usenet in a Usenet thread? The simplicity of the interface and protocol as well as the clean text-based formatting strip it of the cruft of the web, while still keeping the important part (conversation) front and centre.

And I have already said that I am "not old," and I was in fact born after 1993, so I couldn't have nostalgia for Usenet as you seemed to assume.

Clearly you have been upset by something. Could I suggest a brisk walk to cool down?
>>
>>58530311
Yes, just like every usenet shit posting on every other website saying that the internet should stick to where it was in the 1980s is also a bad opinion and could stop but won't.

>>58524869
This was in 2004, no matter which year usenet spergs inhabit they always insist you have to only browse usenet using terminal based software. In 2004 there were web clients since there were also web clients in 1998. And now it is 2017.
>>
>>58530291
>"all other websites must be like usenet"

Usenet is a protocol (or rather, NNTP is the proper name) not a web site.

>"I was here first so everyone has to do what I say"

Who implied such a thing? Different things can exist concurrently. The internal combustion engine didn't kill the pedal bike, and people still use acoustic instruments while we have electric instruments. Technology needn't be an army salting the earth in its wake.

>"we must delete all other websites because they challenge me when I visit them and I get scared"

Again, who implied such a thing?

And you still seem like you need to calm down a little bit.

Pan works for me but my first experience with Usenet was using Grabit. I rarely use nzbs, I just browse groups when I download binaries (most music.)

Sabnzb is the ultimate convience if you know a good nzb indexer, but I don't so whatever.
>>
>>58530366
>every other website saying that the internet should stick to where it was in the 1980s is also a bad opinion and could stop but won't.

I think when it comes to technology it's always good to follow the Neil Postman example.
>One question should be 'what is the problem to which this technology is a solution?'
>And a second question would be 'whose problem is it actually?'
>And a third question would be 'if there is a legitimate problem that is solved by this technology what other problems will be created by my using this technology?'

This allows for technologies of all sorts to fill their own niche. There are obvious advantages that Usenet gives over other forms of similar technologies in that you can pull and push posts up and down in lumps rather than having to worry about maintaining an internet connection in order to read, and respond, to posts at your own leisure. It also is formatted for long-form sentences and posts rather than the flurry of short posts that you see with things like Twitter. Even 4chan isn't great because of it's 2,000 character limit.

>This was in 2004
The post was from 2004. Considering that there's some Usenet archives that go back (literally) decades, it's very likely that this could be just something old that that poster took a screen shot of. Or it could just be an old screen shot.
>>
>>58530346
there is no "conversation" on usenet because it follows the 80s and 90s model of using 1 or 2 admins to "monitor" (delete everything they don't like from) the boards and they pipe their failures and stress into this and ban everything. too much time has passed and the majority of the "conversation" is going to be 30 year old circlejerk-in-jokes that only 5 people get and only stick around to repeat it explicitly so that new people won't get it. Outside of half the "conversation" being banned on sight the other unbanned half is going to be nostalgia on nostalgia on nostalgia on also 30 year old posts from the authors who re-found them.

Usenet is already deep into its vicious cycle in which its loserbase didn't want to take the 5 minutes to learn something else, this number increased exponentially over time since to get a usenet shit to migrate to any other site would take decades of un-learning all of ye olde usenet commandments which is to put on the smarm and off-handedly shit on every other website by using phrases like "cruft" or "signal to noise ratio".

Usenet is not for "conversation" because in order for that conversation to not be banned it has to have been 40 years old. Solution to this was web consolidation because you can't get banned by some 4 foot beard gnome parade lord. Usenet is instead for "containment".
>>
Switched to usenet from torrents to save bandwith on my shitty Comcast. Works great with Sonarr and nzbget like >>58525214 said. anizb.org is a good free tracker for anime.
>>
>>58530484
You seem to be confusing Usenet with BBSs.

Usenet, due to its distributed nature, was very difficult to control the content of. This is why the 'Eternal September' event happened: new users would behave badly and there would be no way of stopping their poor quality posts from spreading, which encouraged the many other new users to continue behaving as they did.
>>
>>58530597
Yes, thankfully we had knowledgeable people in place to ban all the new incoming users, they don't know about my gay 10 year old in-jokes and their posts are therefore poor quality. If we hadn't been there to ban the masses, whatever would have happened?

web consolidation and the modern internet because nobody wants to play the admin-feelie-ban game
>>
how do I connect and download stuff without having to pay
>>
>>58530766
You can't really. The free NNTP servers (Aioe, Eternal September, etc.) are discussion groups only. The binaries are both too large and too legally risky to really allow access to. This is really why ISPs stopped having their own Usenet servers.

>>58530672
>whatever would have happened?
Eternal September, the thing that happened because they couldn't control people who behaved poorly or broke the rules. Try to keep up.
>>
>can torrent for free
>hurr why don't you pay a monthly fee to a jew so you can do the same you are doing now?
>>
>>58530887
the "rules" in this case are made up by a series of losers who showed up first. "behaving poorly" is the same thing, according to whose rules? whoever showed up first.

Eternal September has nothing to do with the "other people" that showed up, it has to do with the starting people being unable to accept anything else. This is why usenet is shit and usenet threads are shit, the entire thing derives from the holier-than-thou psuedo argument, that is always what's on the usenet side. It was inevitable because any group of people who showed up later would be different from the first group. Usenet users are incompatible with the entire rest of the race.
>>
>>58531157
Why should someone accept manners as poor as yours in a community?
>>
>>58531215
You have shown right here in this thread why usenet failed and "eternal september" was a fabrication.

>translate stupid circlejerk ban-on-sight rules as "netiquette" and "manners"
>We were here first and hereby decree you need manners to "communicate" online
>here's some new people
>they have common sense and this goes against our rules
>we need to ban them all
>huh why are there other sites guys?
>>
>>58523292
That's exactly what a service provider is: you pay for access to their news server. There are free ones too, but they naturally have much poorer article retention and likely no binaries,

usenet persists because there's endless ways to build on top of a fast, distributed data store.
>>
So what provider lets me pay via bitcoin and connect via VPN?
>>

now i know what all those TBs are for

how about something useful instead, like proper rips of NT 3.1 or Netware, before it went to shit, or CD version of Flashback ISOs?
