Intel invented Thunderbolt and the USB commission invented USB-C.

Apple had nothing to do with it.

Thunderbolt 3 can become any port you want, and it uses the USB-C port standard. Both are standards, not created by Apple, but by Intel and the USB commission.

I think it's a brilliant move. USB-C is sturdy and reversible....and TB3 allows it to become anything you want, from HDMI to USB 3.0, to Ethernet, you name it.
