What are some uses for an external hard drive?

Why would you ever use one of these over a flash drive? Legit, why would you ever need 4TB to be portable? Word documents and such would never take up that much storage space.
>>

Backups? I have a 14TB RAID0 that's 80% full, and about 6TB of shit I actually need backed up.

I have 6x 2TB externals that I keep duplicate backups on.
>>
Was useful when I was in the military and was deployed somewhere I had no internet access. Had a 2tb one loaded with movies/tv series. I'm sure I could fill up a 4tb easy.
>>
>why do you need [blank]

this is a stupid thread.

why do you NEED anything? Why do you have a computer? Why don't you just walk to the library?

Its almost like wants and needs are different you fucking idiot. If someone wants a portable 4TB who are you to say otherwise you dumb cunt.

Fuck off out of here, idiot.
>>
>>58509477
Out of internal slots? Easy, relatively portable backups?
>>
>>58509489
>Backups

But for backups they make the bigger ones that can go up to 8tb. I understand why those would exist.

I just don't see why the smaller ones exist. It's definitely a cool piece of technology, I just can't find a situation where I'd ever go "damn, if only I could carry 4TB in my pocket"
>>
>>58509508
I'm not saying you shouldn't buy it I just want to know a situation where you'd buy one
>>
>>58509512
Its fill a niche. Some people only need a 1TB drive to back everything up, some need 4TB, some need 8TB. Some dont want to pay the 8TB price because 4x 2TBs are cheaper.

>>58509477

offline backups my friend :)
>>
>>58509477
I ran out of drive bays so I've got a few externals for storage till I get a RAID enclosure.

It's a large amount of easily transferable data.

You could do so much.

I actually run windows off an external HDD and when I go back home to my parent's or something I can take it with me, connect it to their PC and boot from it

I always try to use USB3 if I can but even with USB2.0 it works very well and fast

Jesus, at least get a portable SSD
>>
I shoot videos that would go up to a few hundred gb per session. It's handy that I can just chug them on an external and hand it to the editor
>>
>>58509671
I'll get an SSD once this breaks down, I have no reason to spend money on one while this one is still working.

pic related, good enough speeds for me

It's a 320Gb HDD from years ago that I salvaged from an old laptop

To have tons of movies, TV shows, music, and games on one portable storage device?
>>
>>58509527
Do you not consume any media at all? Do you know how fast you can fill up space when you torrent entire series of TV shows and dozens of movies in HD?

I have a 14 hour flight and anime to watch, my laptop only has a 128 GB SSD
>>
>>58509906
What if your Internet goes out? What if you travel somwhere without access to the Internet? Why wouldn't you want a saved copy that's already loaded up and ready to play on command with no buffering in full HD?
>>
>>58509906

downloaded media is always superior to streamed
>>
Easy to move encrypted files at work between machines.
>>
>>58509900

not really except video games and lately I haven't been playing those either. I've never been much for movies or tv

does that make me a bad goy

My monitor is a refurbished all in one pc a customer never picked up, the internal hdd is dead so I boot Ubuntu MATE off an external disk, It's only a core i3 in there but the display is fantastic, when I want to play games I switch to the hdmi input from my desktop and swap the USB hub with my keyboard and mouse a port to the left, when I want to get work done I switch back
>>
>>58510512
Why not keep your kb/m plugged into your desktop and use Synergy?

What's the point of internal hard drives when external hard drives exist? Are internal hard drives faster? Then why not just use only internal hard drives and move those around instead of external ones? Are they not faster? They why bother buying internal hard drives at all when external hard drives are a thing?
Why do we need both? I don't understand.
