BSD is Unix, GNU/Linux is Unix-like

i'm considering switching from win8.1 to freebsd.
I've read a few guides to starting, and am reading through parts of the site.
how do i get started otherwise?
things i should know??
>>58506594
Read section I and maybe section II too.

There's nothing particularly special. The install is easy. If you don't know what to install, it's better to install more than you need rather than less than you need, and to enable more than you need, rather than disable more than you need.
I will, however, note than OpenBSD has easier configuration than FreeBSD.
Also, FreeBSD has support for all major desktops, but you should probably try Lumina or KDE rather than any other one.

I was considering OpenBSD, but i considered that with a larger user base, it might mean a bit more support(idk)
and im probably going to use KDE.
>>58506647
but thankyou for the advice anon
>>58506692
FreeBSD has more support from proprietary software vendors, yes.
As for KDE, some applications will be missing since some KDE applications are developed for GNU/Linux only. But you should be fine.

how easy is dual booting with FreeBSD?
>>58506749
Easy, the way I do it with OpenBSD and Windows. But the way I do it is to have both OSes on separate drives. I hear Windows is not cooperative with dualbooting two OSes on the same drive.
Just buy a SSD or HDD for your computer, and keep all your OSes on separate drives. Use your UEFI/BIOS boot selection to choose which drive you boot from.

ok, sounds good

BSD has no drivers!
>>58507318
Drivers don't support BSD*
