As a student on a budget, what is the most suitable laptop? It wouldn't be used for anything too intensive: mainly word processing, internet browsing and the like.

By a budget, I'm talking about value. MacBooks are pretty, but I don't see them as good value for money. At the same time, I wouldn't want to cheap out on a Chinese craptop that is of no use.

I don't know a lot about laptops; all I can really do is list off their names, I don't know which are good.

Used high end business laptops. Massive quantities bought in bulk and then sold in bulk when replaced, often times still in great condition.

Slap in a new battery and you're good to go.

Thinkpad X220 on eBay

Dell Latitude E6420/30/40 are also good choices.

well, it has shit build quality, but as long as you're careful with it, Acer has laptops that go upto 200 USD cheaper to other brands with the same specs

Yeah, i was a bit skeptical top but then i decided to dall' for the meme and got myself a x230. Best choice of my life.

Really?
I was thinking of getting the Acer E5 575 from this >>58498025.

Should I consider the Lenovo I100, or the Dell inspiron 3558 core i5?
>>
>>58499562
The price difference most likely also means cheaper parts which are more prone to failure.

>>58497845
This week I got my father a Lenovo Ideapad, 15", i3, 8GB RAM. Since most consumer laptops are pretty bad I expected the worse, but it's build quality is pretty good. It also runs Linux perfectly without having to mess with any drivers (unlike Windows 10).

>>58499593
Got one of the 310 series, but the above might apply as well.

Usually Asus laptops are pretty decent, but slightly more expensive than the brands below.

I avoid most consumer laptops from brands like HP and Acer because of their terrible quality. Often they are made from cheap plastic and quickly overheat.

Probably won't do that.
Just need it for office work and browsing the internet.

>>
>>58497845

>>

>>
Thinkpad L450 or L460, they're pretty cheap in my area (brand new). Any good, or should I go for the recommended T420s? What's the difference, other than the specs, in these models?
>>
>>58500735
I'd advise against the thinkpad meme, but at that price point you'd be better off with a refurbed thinkpad. Ask /tpg/ about a decent price for the thinkpad you are eyeing.
Initial expenses for a refurbed thikpad would be lower than $400, but with the memes you're bound to put in, the total would come out at around $600-700, but that's over the course of upgrading
Also don't get the new consumer-tier thinkpads they are shit.
>>
>>58500797
Refurbished aren't an option.
It have to be new.
>>
>>58500797
>the new consumer-tier thinkpads they are shit

in what sense? quality sucks, or just overpriced memes?
>>
>>58497845
Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Pro.
It's about $130 only! Buy it NOW!
>>
If you want the absolute cheapest go with a used Chromebook, bare necessities for the price (I'm talking $50 if you really dig around.) If you have a bit of spending money go with a used business laptop, you'll get power, good value, and it'll last you a really long while.
>>
I really like the dell latitude series. My work provides me with one and its pretty damn fast for running windows 10.

I got myself one and put mint xfce on it and it's buttery smooth.

Check the dell outlet. Buy from there and you get the same warranty as if you would have bought new.
>>
>>58500827
quality sucks
Used x230s on ebay average at $260, SSD included. That is assuming you are fine with the low resolution
>>
>>58500864

Will it..
1. Run office?
2. Play my chinese cartoons?
3. Allow me to install browser other than chrome?

These anon, currently posting from my t420 and im in 2nd year uni math/stats. Its good for small python scripts and general homework.

Have even done some hackathon Android app on it.
>>
>>58497845

Are there any companies in your country which sell refurbished business laptops?

I bought a HP Folio 9470M for 390€ with 1 year warranty. It had Core i5 3317u, 8GB RAM, 240GB SSD and 1600*900 panel. Battery lasts for 4-5 hours and new ones cost less than 40€.

I could have gotten a used laptop a bit cheaper where I live but I think paying extra 50€ for 1 year warranty wasn't too bad.
>>
Intel CPUs...

Y suffix? or U suffix?

what specs should I look for to program using VS 2015? I know it's a slow IDE, so I want to get a nice laptop to make it run smoothly. Intel i5 is enough? With 12 ram?
>>
>>58497879
Enjoy your virginity. Get an Apple© product like a normal person, and maybe the opposite sex won't shun you.
>>
>>58500662
Used/refurb is how you get them cheap. Although obviously take care when choosing one.
>>
>>58500816
>Refurbished aren't an option.
>$400 or under
You will be relegated to consumer-tier laptops.
>>58501848
For your price, you could do worse.
