Still rocking my /g/400. The current G series of mice are basically the same shit, except with a gaymen aesthetic. I'd still buy a G402 because the leds can be turned off. I don't game as much as I used to, and don't really like the "precision button" on the new Logitech G series.
>>
>>58484031
The LED in the G402 cannot be turned off, only lowered. It might be a bug, but if you put it at the lowest setting, it's not actually turned off. It still emits a very low amount of light that can be seen in darkness.

Overall, it's also a worse mouse than the G400.

There are a variety of technical and non-technical terms used in describing mice and mouse sensors. This post aims to help people dive in without having to lurk forever, and also a place to point when people misuse words.

"Perfect sensor" is a phrase used to describe sensors that are Good Enough that you can ignore any problems they have. It's impossible to have a 100% completely perfect sensor. Perfect sensors are assumed to have only low amounts of acceleration, jitter, and smoothing, and a reasonably high tracking speed.

"Perfect tracking speed" is the point below which a given mouse (on specific settings) appears to behave correctly, with changes in speed being reflected faithfully in the cursor "immediately".

"Jitter" is, generally, randomness in exactly how much the mouse responds to your movements. Jitter is usually "noise".

"Acceleration" is a general change in the sensitivity of a mouse between two broad, different ranges of motion. "Positive acceleration" means the mouse's sensitivity is higher with fast motions, and "negative acceleration" means the mouse's sensitivity is lower with fast motions.

"Smoothing" is a mathematical and deterministic "blurring" of the sensor's motion or position data to remove high-frequency information like jitter or noise. All smoothing present in commercial mice takes the form of literal "blur" (TL note: "convolution"). Because you can't see the "future" of motion data without adding extra latency, this blur is biased towards past motion values, which means that it adds at least a small amount of latency.

"Malfunction speed" is defined differently for different mice. Many modern gaming mice, when they malfunction, get locked into a state where they won't track until they stop moving entirely. Others, when they malfunction, just shoot off into a corner. Some sensors don't malfunction at all, or at least not that we know of, in which case you might as well use "malfunction speed" for any speed at which the sensor stops giving any sort of change in response for faster motion (as if a hard speed limit).

"Native DPI" is usually used to refer to a DPI setting that a mouse runs best at. While some sensors like the 3310 and 336X have no native DPI in this sense of the term, older mice could have lower tracking speeds or weird prediction when set to non-"native" DPI settings. The 3310 and 336X still have a kind of "native" DPI, where one pixel of cursor motion corresponds to one raster (or possibly half a raster, depending on how they work internally) of optical sensor image motion. The second definition is still useful because any subpixel resolution data (or possibly sub-half-pixel resolution, again) has to use non-trivial properties of the surface image. Such subpixel resolution data is always mandatory in a mouse sensor to reduce SRAV to reasonable levels, but at higher-than-"native"-dpi, the native deadzone of the sensor is shrunk below the "native" resolution of the mouse, so extremely slow movements are now subject to non-trivial surface properties.

"CPI", or more normally, "DPI", is the base sensitivity of a mouse, the number of pixels the cursor will move if you slowly move it an inch. Acceleration corresponds to a dynamic DPI. CPI is an alternative name for DPI used by people who think DPI is an inaccurate name, because mosue tracking doesn't have "dots" per se.
>>
>>58484881
"Speed-Related Accuracy Variance", or SRAV, is an acceleration-like flaw where the sensitivity response of a mouse "ripples" up and down across a wide range of physical speeds. SRAV means that marginal changes in physical speed can cause noticable changes in. In fact, most "acceleration" that's part of a mouse is actually SRAV, under the surface. SRAV is one of the results of being unable to acquire perfect subpixel resolution data in the correlation process, as noted under the definition of "Native DPI". If perfect image resampling were possible (which it's not, for the sharpness of image that mouse sensors read off their surface), SRAV could be mostly eliminated by using overpowered DSPs inside sensors and supersampling the sensor images to an obscene resolution before doing correlation.

"Physical DPI", or some variation of the term, is used to describe either the physical scale of an optical sensor's rasters, or the optical field on the mousepad corresponding to said rasters. Both of them are meaningful and important in their own ways.

"Illustration snagging" is a behavior where some optical sensors don't track reliably when placed on top of certain graphical features of mousepads. This can happen for a large variety of reasons, including miscalibration or mis-aligned LEDs. Illustration snagging can manifest as literal snagging, as increased jitter on these areas, as a loss of tracking entirely, or as any other number of sensor flaws, including malfunction in the worst cases.

"Swamp cursor" is a subjective feeling that your movements under-respond, and when you compensate for the under-response, they over-respond. Swamp-cursor can be because of illustration snagging, smoothing, bad SRAV, etc. Because it's a subjective feeling, all bets are off when you talk about it.
>>
I bought a MX master for my laptop but it's too big imho

For my desktop I still have a g9x, best mouse ever
>>
>>58484885
SRAV means that marginal changes in physical speed, for the same physical distance, can cause noticable changes in cursor distance traveled*
>>
>>58484885

"Framerate" is how often the mouse sensor polls the surface. Most gaming mice have a sensor framerate between 2k and 12k hz. Ideally, framerate would be in sync with polling rate, to eliminate tiny amounts of temporal jitter, but almost no mice do this. Mouse framerates add a small amount of latency to the tracking, but as long as they're reasonably high, this will be completely negligible.
>>
>>58485012
"Polling rate" is how often the computer asks the mouse for updates. The faster this is, the less latency polling adds. 1000hz is considered transparent.

By far and wide, the g900 is the best mouse I've ever used.

For the record, I had this new "gamer" aeshtetic.

I've tried just about every mouse to date (entire logitech catalog, including the golden days with the g9 and g5), steelseries, corsair (m65 is honestly overrated), mionix, razer, and the dreaded rat mice.

By far and wide, the g900 has unbelievably smooth and accurate tracking. In lab tests, it beats out all the other contenders.

That being said, the damn thing is $150, so my personal recommendation is a g303, since the sensor in the thing is awesome and you can pick them up on sale for $30.
>>
Desktop uses a g700 because it fits my hand nicely. Laptop has an m325, can't do better for 15 bucks.
>>
>>58491984
I don't have a trackball, but the reason I use a wireless mouse is not because a cable gets in the way of normal usage, but because I sometimes move the mouse to a different position on the desk, or from the tray to my 'upper' desk.

MX is nice but those wings are a fucking dealbreaker.

I want a mouse that:

1) Has an optical sensor
2) Wireless
3) 2 side buttons, 2 top buttons
4) Scroll wheel that's metal and spins freely
5) NO WINGS ON THE SIDE
6) NO FUCKING RUBBER ANYWHERE! Rubber degrades after a year or two and becomes sticky.
7) BONUS: Uses standard batteries.

Can /g/ recommend me a mouse that fits the above criteria?
>>
>>58484031

I liked the G900 so much that I didn't care that it cost as much as it did. There is no competitor that even comes close to it, and I don't regret it.

>>58495042
Yeah, that was internal Lab tests at logitech, but they showed some interesting data.
Luke (LTT) made a two videos, one where he went to the Logitech development offices, and one at an expo where they were demoing it.
Based on the setups that they had, I would believe the data that they showed though. It was the engineers talking, and not the PR guys, which is usually a sign that the info is valid.
>>
>>58494997
>there is wireless version you tard
nice vid. but it has rubber sides :(

why, oh why, can't there be a good mouse without rubber?

none of the mice I've had could last past 2/3 years without rubber degrading or just ending up looking like it has leprosy.
>>
>>58495083
Cheap mouses use cheap rubber.
Good quality rubber will last you for decades.
Similar to the difference between ABS and PBT keycaps. Both are plastic, but PBT doesn't wear down nearly as quickly as ABD and stays matte for years, whereas ABS can wear to a shine within months.
>>
>>58495088
>Good quality rubber will last you for decades.
I have hard time believing that but OK.. I'd still prefer plastic over rubber.

This Logitech Pro looks perfect:

I've also looked at the Logitech G Pro as a spiritual successor to Microsoft Intellimice, since the Microsoft WMO is the perfect mouse for me and I've used it for 10+ years.

Pic related, my two WMO's and IME3.0.

Anywhere MX (The size I prefer) is literally like 30% smaller than the mice he is comparing.

I literally can not play RTS games with a full sized mouse after getting used to darkfield on a small mouse. It feels like trying to dribble a basketball with a bat.

Also thinking some dipshit youtube reviewer can tell you which mouse fits your grip is fucking stupid, you have to go try the mice yourself.

See some of the testing done here:
http://www.gamersnexus.net/hwreviews/2418-logitech-g900-chaos-spectrum-review-and-in-depth-analysis

This video is not specifically about the g900, but it comes out the king of all the mice tested, although, to be fair, the tests were run by logitec, but I can't imagine how they could botch the competition:

He's a namefag with tiny hands, why are you expecting rational behaviour from him?
>>
>>58494924
They were great, especially considering the price. I heard some people had issues with their cord, but I liked how lightweight the cord was. The G400 got everything right and didn't include a bunch of extra gimmicks.
>>
>>58499671
You act like talking about which size of mouse to use is a topic where any expertise could be gleaned from a godamn youtube video. I'm calling you the moron for watching it not him one for making the video, you were obviously the target audience.
>>
>>58484031

I really hate the direction that logitech has taken with their peripheral, also I find it weird that the lower end mice don't even have back/forward buttons... why?

I have the MX master,

the forward/back buttons need getting use to, not only are they small but the buttons themselves feel much further back than my previous mouse (another logitech)

Unless you have a need for that thumb button and the wheel there, you are likely better off getting something else for cheaper.

What's the best mouse WITHOUT ANY RUBBER on it?

Mice manufacturers love using rubber because it degrades quickly and you're forced to buy another mouse after a year. They just love jewing you out of your shekels.

Rubberized mice are also impossible to clean... as soon as you use dishsoap or lysol wipes, it becomes sticky and attracts even more lint and dead skin cells.

Seriously, fuck rubber on mice.

So, which mice don't have rubber?

Don't talk to me or my son ever again.

I use the compact mouse for osu, and the deathadder for everything else.

>>
>>58483316
How is it for gaming? I love everything about that mouse except for the fact that it's wireless. I don't do competitive gaming, however i do like to play FPS games where I maybe might notice some input lag.
>>
I use a Deathadder Classic. Not the greatest mouse but I paid $30 for it and its pretty good for what I use it for.

I really want a Mionix mouse though. I just spent $700 on a new computer though so... maybe soon.
>>
>>58506891
Haven't noticed any real lag myself but I barely game nowadays.
You can use it wired with the included micro usb I think.
>>
Fits well in hand + Wireless + back/forward buttons on right side + scroll wheel
Optional: DPI button

That's all I ever look for in a mouse.

Logitech M500. My work got one for me when I said I wanted something more ergonomic. I liked it so much, that I bought my own. Great value for $25.
>>
>>58507003
i like the shape and aluminum scroll wheel. too bad it's wired.

ps: does the wheel spin freely or does it have stops?
>>
>>58503758
This, except I got the wired version. I also bought the DeathAdder Elite to compare with it. Ended up returning the DA Elite because the hump in the middle where your palm rests was too tall for my hand making me need to arch grasp/claw the mouse.
>>
>>58507022

I prefer the wire since it's for a desktop and I don't use wireless for things that stay in one place.

You can choose if you want it to spin freely or click using the button under the wheel.
>>
>>58507044
damn. looks almost perfect except for the wire.

does it have any rubber?
>>
>>58507081

There's some grooved rubber on the scroll wheel for traction. Is that what you mean?
>>
>>58507103
no, the sides. i hate rubber on the sides.

fuck, does Logitech make a mouse exactly like that but wireless???

>>58507114

The sides of it definitely feel like rubber, but it's smooth enough that it doesn't bug me. The closest I could find to a wireless equivilant would be the M510 (pic attached). It doesn't look like the same shape though, and looks smaller since it's probably marketed as a laptop mouse.

Also, if you hate rubber on the sides, then this looks like it would be annoying.
>>
>>58507146
thats a shit mouse. rubber sides, shit scroll wheel.
>>
>>58507164

Yeah, that scroll wheel does look like shit. Looks like it would stop immediately upon letting go if you try to quick-scroll
>>
>>58507181
Yep! That "infinite scroll" wheel from logitech is the best. you can recognize them by the metal wheel. when they spin freely without clicks, it allows you to quickly scroll through pages. Wish more mice had that.
>>
>>58507208

Even with the clicks, it still keeps some momentum if you flick it fast enough. Makes that satisfying high-pitched buzz too.
