So I'm at this cafe right now trying to study and connected to the cafe's free wifi. I am quite worried the security and Avast even warned me that I am at risk with this public wifi. I know a VPN would help secure me but I don't know which one to choose. I am looking for a free one and I'm using the Hoxx VPN addon on my browser which works well but Im unsure if its entirely trustable. Any suggestions?

Cheapest option is set one up on a home network.
Paid options vary. Look how it will have to connect to your computer. If it needs a custom piece of software in stead of OpenVPN it dosen't deserve your money.
if you want to connect back to your home network, and use it as VPN, go with a Raspberry Pi, cost 25 bucks. You can find load of how-to guides giving you details.
The hardest part is messing at home with port forwarding, firewall, dynamic DNS, etc. it can be a pain.
Slightly easier, is go with a cheap VPS by a hosting company.
its a little linux server you access on line, you set up VPN, google "low end VPS" 128MB is enough

he ain't gonna be able to set up his own installation of OpenVPN on a VPS if he's asking this question and talking about using Avast. He'd be better served by picking one of the dedicated VPN services in Torrentfreak's guide.
NordVPN

Are they considered good?
Asking because I bought a 2 year subscription, was like $70, didn't know if it was good but wanted a VPN and that deal was slick.

2 year for 70$ is not so cheap.
I can rent a vps for less for two years and install openvpn on it
Why do people here never talk about AirVPN? I fucking love it. It's the bee's knees.

We don't want the plebs to hear about the good services, we want them to stay on PIA and HMA.

I don't think that'd work that well in my case. I needed to be able to connect to 3 different countries, so I think that'd be a bitch to set up using VPS.
AirVPN, Mullvad, and Cryptostorm
