I remeber a few weeks ago there was a thread about old video formats (LaserDisc, Betamax, VHS), but that made me wonder. Has there ever been a good or decent video format?
Also if DVD is such a shit format, how come most films still look so good on it?

Because having 8gb to work with lets you use pretty high bitrates wrt. 480p content, and MPEG2 encoding techniques matured quickly just a few years into DVD's lifetime
