I was part of the team who assembled the very first cables. We just grabbed some shitty copper cable from old Ethernet cables and shoved it into a crudely made connector

Back in the day, you were expected to TURN OFF YOUR COMPUTER before inserting or removing any cables. Otherwise you ran the risk of connecting the pins unevenly and shorting out your motherboard. Some protocols were not quite so hazardous, but they had other problems, like having to daisy chain devices together, or only supporting one device at a time, or requiring a reboot to be able to detect that something was connected or disconnected.
USB 1.0 worked great for mice and keyboards, but it was so fucking slow. Scanning documents could take 10 goddamn minutes.
