Because they were shit and the only thing they were widely used for were cell modems which became easier to use through usb and wifi hotspots and for added connectivity which manufacturers just integrated directly into the chassis

at this point we're looking at plugging in one USB-C cable and getting charging and everything else at once. stop acting like the incompetent people on infomercials who can't open milk cartons and shit.

USB 3.0 offers 5gbps; expresscard offers 2.5gbps

but devices fall into one of two categories: either you need 100MB/s or less, or you need several gigabits per second or more (ideally more). hard drives, keyboards, etc... fall into the lower category, and monitors and SSDs fall into the upper category.

expresscard never tried to drive monitors (not that graphics at the time could drive that kind of stuff) and external SSDs weren't really a thing until after expresscard fell out.

and then when USB leapfrogged it and offered 5gbps, people figured that was a win-win.
