You'll compile almost every component, it has it's advantages and disadvantages but basically you trade install time for the ability to mess with the compile options. Most people don't need to do that but you might still learn a lot.

It worth it, really. Gentoo portage is a masterpiece. I was shifted to it after win->freebsd tier. OMG, it's great system.
If you know Ubuntu or RHEL, you know Ubuntu or Red Hat. I you know gentoo, you know Linux (c) someone.
It's not candy land, yep. But if you want really customed, sharpened, fine-tuned system - gentoo is what you need.
