I guess if you're poor.

If you're over 22 and have a real job, you should buy Nvidia at the 1070 or 1080 range like a successful adult.

But I agree, 480 is the card to go if you are using your mommy's monthly allowance.
>>
>>58436359
That's great mate. I'll gladly pay extra for a 1080 which lets me actually make use of my 144hz monitor when gaming and has far better driver support and cooling.

We know. Please stop mentioning it. It makes nvidiots uncomfortable and launch into unbeckoned post-purchase rationalization.
>>
>>58436471
or if gaming is just a secondary hobby if don't need to invest top tier money

It can't use gsync though :)
>>
>>58436536
You're a generation behind- the 480 is as energy efficient as the nvidia cards
>>
>>58436359
How many CUDA cores for GPU compute?

I quote from the manual for the software I use "This can leverage either CPU cores, NVIDIA GPU (graphics card) CUDA cores or a hybrid that users both run solely on the GPU/multiple GPUs. AMD graphics cards will not accelerate this process however the software will still run in CPU only mode on such setups"
So on that basis it dons't strike me that any AMD card offers any performance for the work I do regardless of the price.
>>
>>58436568
Then why were they frying PCI-E slots?
>>
>>58436536
Literally 11cents per kilowatthour
>>
I'd still buy a 1060. It's more future proof to get drivers.
>>
>>58436616
Just the usual bad design. Throw in a little 'it only happened to like 2 people who had shitty PSUs' and /g/ hyperbole and you'd have got the impression that a really rare event happened to everyone (and that AMD was finished for the 340th time that year)

Get drivers that are not perfect at the beginning and that keep improving
Versus
Getting drivers that never get better and get gimped intentionally
>>
>>58436616
they were drawing more power from the PCI-e slot itself than the specification allowed for (75w)

motherboards can usually handle much more than that but it was still a significant risk especially on cheap OEM shit. incidentally we don't hear about that at all anymore so I guess it was mostly a reference model problem.

the overall power draw (slot + 6/8 pin) is pretty good. just about 10w higher than the 1060 and lower than the 970 was. Nvidia still wins there but the difference is so trivial is doesn't matter at all.
>>
>>58436471
If you have a real job you shouldn't waste all that time on gaming. Stop pretending you're earning it, you're just sucking daddy's money kid.
>>

amd's driver support is better than nvidia's right now

what the fuck does cooling have to do with anything? you do realize that amd/nvidia both have shit reference coolers right? and aftermarket coolers depend on who makes them, for example the xfx rx 480 gtr has amazing cooling, while other variants don't

people actually think the 1080 CHIP its self has "good cooling" that's how you know their casual retards

144 fps 1080p on ultra with a 1080 isn't hard.

Just hit it in Mankind Divided. Even turned on some MSAA setting that used like 4GB of GPU memory and still had no problems.

In Dota2 on max it's super easy to hit and it doesn't even stress the GPU at all.

Fuck me. I walked out of Fry's Electronics yesterday with my GTX 1060 for $250 (my 560ti just crapped out). RX480 8GB Nitro owner here. Can confirm it's a great card. Runs kind of hot though. Sits at about 85 when playing The Witcher 3 (1080p, Ultra, Hair works off) but that's the most demanding game I play.

Unfortunately I noticed my GPU has faulty bearings on one of the fans so I sent it back to the supplier today. Will have to wait a few days.

Thank for reading my blog. Be sure to Like/Subscibe/Donate and share!

>>
>>58436471
I can guarantee that the people that buy 480s/1060s get more out of their cards than those who buy 1080s.
90% of 1080 owners are posers that are shit at video games and just like to goggle at their fancy graphics and high performance without actually doing anything worthwhile with it.
>>

No. 290x sits between 1060 3gb and 480 4gb. Comes in around $160 used. Used market will always give better price/perf.
>>
No matter how you look at it Nvidia have caused an up surge in the cost of gfx cards, their greed has gotten the best of them, just like Intel in the CPU market,, as long as their are customers who are stupid enough to pay their HUGE prices, they will continue to keep the price going up, for god sale bring back 3DFX lol.

Funny right? Considering that a heavily OCed GTX 970 (most do +1500core) can compete and even win against a 480 8GB most of the time.

The real dumbasses are the people who buy anything inbetween a 470 and a 1070

470 is the perfect 1080p 60fps card and the 1070/980ti is the perfect 1440p 60fps card

anything inbetween and you're not gonna reach 1440p 60fps on high settings, so either your game will have ugly shadows and lower textures or you'll be running at 1080p, something a 470 is more than capable of doing

Sooo AMD is still only good for mining bitcoins and altcoins? ;))))

8GB for 200$ or 12GB for 1200$?

Now you see, the problem is... how strong and quality-oriented is the graphics card?
Because id it's anything like AMD's CPU's then you're just paying for 8GB worth of DDR1 memory instead of DDR5. Same deal with their shit tier CPUs.

It's like they were meant for mining altcoins. You can't even use them as a workstation, their low speed would lag your 3D rendering programs and the piss poor temperatures would fry hardware, damaging the motherboard and anything else.

Price/performance has never been a factor to me though, even when I'm a NEET most times. I stopped thinking that way maybe 10 years ago when I noticed that I ended up wasting more money on parts like that. Parts that never ran games well or had the games look like ass, parts that were obsolete the following year and so on.
Eventually I got a 144hz g-sync monitor and now the demand for even more horsepower is a thing for me.

I can afford to buy 1070, but when i did some research i realized that 480 is sufficient for most gaymes in 1080p, even 1440p performance is decent.

It would be better to get a 480 8gb in your case. More vram for the future as well as the simple objective fact that Radeon GPUs get better than their Nvidia counterparts after a few years.

C'mon guys this is absurd. Everyone knows that if their shit hardware actually rivaled Nvidia then they wouldn't reduce the price by 6x times.
You're buying hot new trash off the presses. Buying from AMD/ATI is like buying Celerons from Intel, it's just not worth it in the long run. Nvidia and Intel are separate companies.

It's like putting Poland against nazi Germany and soviet Russia. Nvidia and Intel are gangbanging AMD hard. Hear he scream as she accepts her whore payment in pennies and sour milk.

Dumb /g/oiym. Now they'll buy everything from AMD for sure and I'll end up buying the superior stuff for a third of the price. Nvidia and Intel will lower their prices.

Yes, screaming at 12-year-olds in Call of Duty is totally valid "research" in the area of physics.

Seriously thou, serious scientific computing is pretty much always done using double precision floating point numbers and Nvidia is infamous for hobbling their consumer cards' single precision performance in firmware. Can't let us goys get away running scientific computations on consumer cards, we need to buy Quadro's instead.

I mean technically you're right. 480 can barely OC above reference clocks, either way, Hi there /v/!
>>
>>58439911
Literally any solid 970 can do 1500 on core, best ones could do up to 1550 and with a golden ticket to silicon lottery you could go up to 1600.

http://www.3dmark.com/fs/8432810

480 RX is literally glorified 970 and no reviewer out there dared to actually compare those cards at full potential OC with air cooling.
>>
>>58436863
This
Although the power draw was well outside of PCIe spec and and was risking losing the ability to even call it a PCIe card until they fixed it software-side
But yeah, although over-spec, nobody fried a PCIe slot from a 480
>>

that's objectively wrong you dumb fanboy idiot. people have gotten 1400Mhz with reference coolers.
>>
>>58440823
>1400 Mhz

Truly incredible! A whole 3.7% clock gain! That's only 17% less than Nvidia.
>>
>>58440729

The average OC for a 970 is 1425 core. 1500 is by definition above average and not representative of typical overclocks. To wit because my 290x hits 12200mhz core (on air no less) should I be claiming that any good 290x hits 1200mhz?

http://hwbot.org/hardware/videocard/geforce_gtx_970/

(for reference the average 290x overclock is 1140 core)

No it isn't. 1500 is literally the minimum that any GM204 chip can achieve, anything beyond that will be playing the silicon lottery.

Average doesn't mean shit, it will just be weighted down by people benching reference cards and cards with weak factory OCs.

>To wit because my 290x hits 12200mhz core (on air no less)

nothing about that OC is special

>should I be claiming that any good 290x hits 1200mhz?

every 290x can hit 1200mhz, the difference between them is how much voltage it will take. you will most likely be above >1.3v which is the point where electromigration is going to become a problem and the card will be drawing 500w at 100% load.

The 1060 6 GB is a horrible buy at $290.

Similarly, the RX 480 is a horrible buy at $270.

Neither of these cards are worth shit just because they have fancy coolers on them. They're chips that are worth maybe $175 based on their performance. Paying more than that for any of them is a total meme.

>>
>>58443822
The 1060 3GB is a gimped chip so it's not just the VRAM that you get with the 6 GB 1060, but still, absolutely asinine for them to name them the same thing when they aren't even that close in performance.

They could have easily called the 1060 3 GB something else. (1055, etc)
>>
>>58443941
They should've just made the 1060 6gb the 1060ti but I guess the 3gb came out later.
>>
>>58443960
Yeah I think the 1060 3 GB was just a made up SKU from rejected 1060 6 GB full chips that they could salvage by disabling some cores and figured there was a slot for them to address the huge gap between the 1050ti and the fat 1060.

Still, really stupid to call it a 1060 at all. It's different enough that it should have its own designation. Then again, this is the company that released two completely different "Titan X" products a few years apart.

>>
>>58444270
If you absolutely must get a graphics card that performs well at 1080p right now it's pretty much the best choice at that budget. The 1060 3 GB will not age well and it's basically on par with the 470 currently.

I'd look for a 470 4 GB. 8 GB 470 if you can get a good deal but its not crucial at all. That's honestly "too much" VRAM for the 470 to handle before the GPU hits other bottlenecks but it may not go completely to waste. Wouldn't stress if 4 GB was all that was out there at a reasonable price though.
>>
>>58443822

the 1060 3gb and 6 gb are different cards though, it's not just extra vram
