Dial type A looks pretty close to the murph watch (fucking put it up for sale, hamilton). If only I didn't already have two 9015 watches I'd pick it up.
>>
>>58432688
I'm personally not a fan of date windows right next to a numeral on the dial but I like the cathedral hands and the minute track on that one. The build quality is pretty solid but I'm trying to refrain tackling the lug screws until I'm actually not drunk so I'm going to have to hold off on wearing it for at least one day. Never heard of the "Murph" watch until your post, it looks pretty cool. Too bad they're not going to sell it. Seiya seems pretty receptive to his customers, maybe he'll do it without the date window at a later point.
>>
>>58432106
can you post some pics of it when you feel like it
>>
>>58432806
yeah, I'll definitely post pics of it in decent natural light within the next few days. it's dark outside, it might start raining, I'm kind of drunk, and i don't have a lightbox to take decent pictures indoors.

>I'm looking at buying this vintage tissot, how much should I pay for it? Would servicing be expensive?

If you have to ask us, you have no business buying vintage watches.

Before buying a vintage watch you should have done enough research on your own to be able to evaluate the originality, condition and value of particular vintage watch model for yourself.

Trying to buy vintage without having done that research is a recipe for getting scammed.

Newfag here, wondering if I've put on the dial is too big for my hand, whether the NATO strap is properly put on and whether the watch itself is too tight or not from the photos. Are there guidelines to how tight a watch should be around a wrist?

This might be a /fa/ question but is it OK to wear this with the NATO strap and rolled up striped dress shirt and black trousers for work (business casual)? Or should it only be leather or metal bands?

After visiting multiple dealers and trying on every model, I decided to choose the Metro model from Nomos.

The deciding factor : the fucking lugs.

While I was trying them all on I couldn't quite put my finger on why the Tangente and the similar variants didn't look right.

The lugs on those shoot out straight, while the lugs on some of the other models , like the Metro, angle downward and follow the curvature of the wrist.

Makes a huge difference in how they wear.

The club, lambda and lux also looked great on my wrist. But the Metros wire lugs won out.
>>

did you try the minimatik?

>>58435523
Meistersingers aren't amazing. They're definitely pretty good, but they get away with those prices because they have a pretty unique concept with no competition.

Maybe. Depending on the brand and pricepoint. Right now, the three major labels "Swiss made", "made in Germany" and "made in Japan" are dealing with shady business models, mostly from lesser brands, that downgrade reputation and therefore, degrade quality and recognition.

I asked this and got no replies. From what I've read you have to assume the warranty they give is virtually worthless.
So add the cost of a full service (plus customs into your country) to the watch and if it's still reasonably cheaper than from an authorised dealer then go for it.

A good majority of their original designs are pretty awful.

Not who you responded to but let me try and explain. Tag doesn't offer the quality per dollar that you get from some of the japs that try and aim to the mid market like seiko and orient. Tag didn't used to be bad, and they still aren't terrible, just incredibly over priced for the quality you ARE getting. If you really like a style you just simply can't get anywhere else and you're ok spending whatever the cost go for it. But just know that you really aren't wearing something that matches it's price tag in dollar value

At that price point in Canadabux you are going to have a hard time beating a Seiko SDGM001/003 or SARX033/035.

You have a bunch of sub-$750 CAD options for microbrand watches powered by the Miyota 9015, or the Sinn 556 MIGHT be doable for under $1500 CAD (but I don't see the point of a Sinn without any Sinn tech or paying that much for an ETA 2824-2).

The Seiko SDGM001/003 and SARX033/035 have much better dial, case, and bracelet quality and quality of finishing that anything else you can get for the price.

The 6r15c movement in them is comparable in quality to the ETA 2824-2 you would find in most ETA powered competitions.

If Seiko had the balls to put the 4s15 in these models they would literally be the best made watches you could get for less than Rolex/Grand Seiko money.
>>
>>58444916

>>58444933
Thank you for the detailed response. I would assume that the price of these models come from the quality of the movement that drives them mainly, among the other things such as strap and case. What benefits are we talking here on the movement? Better accuracy? Power reserve? Less likely to break?

So you pretty much have to work on your own watches to enjoy old ones right? Especially weird complications like this
>>
>>58445218

Not necessarily. As long as you know a good watchmaker and are willing and able to pay for whatever work is necessary.

With most of the vintage models I have, the cost would run to $150 CAD for a service plus whatever the parts cost for the replacement crystal was.

I do regulate my own watches though, and own a timegrapher for that purpose.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swiss_made

Swiss Made defined by law
Swiss watch

A watch is considered Swiss, according to the Swiss law if:

its movement is Swiss and,
its movement is cased up in Switzerland and;
the manufacturer carries out the final inspection in Switzerland

Swiss watch movement

A watch movement is considered Swiss if:

the movement has been assembled in Switzerland and,
the movement has been inspected by the manufacturer in Switzerland and;
the components of Swiss manufacture account for at least 50 percent of the total value, without taking into account the cost of assembly. From 1 January 2017, the law set the minimum at 60 percent.[2]

If a watch movement is intended for export and will not be cased-up in Switzerland, but it otherwise meets the criteria to be considered a Swiss movement, the watch may say "Swiss Movement" but it may not say Swiss Made on the watch case or dial. A watch that says "Swiss Quartz" is considered to be a proper Swiss watch. However, it is often improperly used by foreign manufacturers to merely indicate that the quartz movement is of Swiss origin.[4]

ETA movements are Swiss made, the question is how much chink stuff is inside? You can make a decorated rotor to account for 60% of the value and import everything else form China. Also Swiss made is not exactly a seal of quality, some Invictas boasts "Swiss made"

The second hand is the small hand on that watch. That being said it doesn't have all its second markers, just 5 second increments.

You can consider getting a classic doctor's watch where the seconds dial is completely underneath the main dial and is fully marked.

There aren't many watches made in this style anymore, as it's not as popular. But you can still find some, and if you like vintage there are lots of nice options.

Seagull is actually a pretty good company in terms of quality...

An estimated ~30% of all watches in the world have parts made by them. They basically ruined a lot of watch brands and watch enthusiasts hate chinese watches because of them . Brands like Stowa for instance , use their parts etc. (they say their parts are sourced in Germany but they just buy them from a German company that imported from China)

If you're going to flat out just wear a Seagull branded watch with no shame that's ok I guess. It's better than wearing a Swiss branded watch with mostly Seagull inside

That's the issue. This law should not be focus on the economic value of the watch, but on the amount of components/assemble percentage/qualilty inspections made by actual swiss watchmakers to calculate the %.

BUT, if they do this, they will destroy lesser brands and impact hard their inner economy.

Thanks. looking forward to the others too.

Interesting design on that Speedy, however the sub dials are a bit smaller than they could have made them. extending them closer to the edge would have improved legibility.

Also, who doesn't Omega lume the sub dial hands? After all the chronometer function is the purpose of the Speedies.

You need to learn to take better pictures of your work before you can open a hipster custom leather strap business and start taking in the cash.

If you want something that's well made, looks good, and perfectly accurate, go for it. The radio synchronisation is such a good feature, that's unfortunately almost always found in g shocks and the like.

>>

>tool watches
No reason why tool watches need to be matte. A polished or brushed surface is easier to restore, and harder to damage, than a matte surface.

In fact, being a mechanical engineer who is in almost constant proximity to heavy machinery, power tools, and hand tools, I generally don't encounter matte surfaces. I cannot think of anything in the shop, or in the office, which is matte.

The closest I can think of is the knurling on our hand-operated lathe controls.

Matte is more "tacticool" than "tool".

>A polished or brushed surface is easier to restore, and harder to damage, than a matte surface.

A brushed surface will be impossible to restore unless you have access to the precise type of brushing used at the factory.

A polished surface would indeed probably be easier to restore by polishing, but polished stainless also shows scratches a lot more easily than a matte finish does, and repeated polishing will eventually start to round the case.

As for one being easier to damage than another, I was not aware of the surface finish changing the Rockwell hardness of stainless steel.
>>
>>58442572
The atomic clock and world time is crazy cool
>>
>>58452591
>A brushed surface will be impossible to restore unless you have access to the precise type of brushing used at the factory
Which is easy, because abrasion surfaces are standardized.

>polished stainless also shows scratches a lot more easily than a matte finish does
Depends on the shape of the surface. Rounded polished surfaces hide scratches well.

>As for one being easier to damage than another, I was not aware of the surface finish changing the Rockwell hardness of stainless steel.
Small protrusions are easier to damage than flat surfaces. Matte finishes can be shined by abrasion against leather, they're very easy to remove.
>>
>>58453041

It was certainly not my understanding that brushed finishes were easy to match, I will have to look into that.

I don't follow how the microscopic protrusions in the matte surface are supposed to make a bug enough difference to be noticeably easier to damage on the macro scale.

It would also take thousands of passes to burnish a matte finish on steel into a polished one using leather, so I'm not sure that effect is of any practical relevance.

Practically speaking, the overwhelming majority of buyers are not going to polish or re-brush their cases, so it should probably be the finish which least shows any damage that should be preferred.

>Divine oracles of mount /wt/!!
I'm split between two very beautiful vintage zenith watches, one automatic and one mechanical. I want this watch to be working for ever (it's from the 1940's).

Which movement (auto/mech) lasts the longest? Does it matter? Which one is least fragile?
>>
>>58453194
>I don't follow how the microscopic protrusions in the matte surface are supposed to make a bug enough difference to be noticeably easier to damage on the macro scale
Because if you have a surface of ridges, and you press it up against something, the only parts of the surface which are imparting any force are the peaks. Those peaks represent a very small surface area, and when the surface area is reduced, the pressure increases. The smaller the protrusion, the more vulnerable it is to damage.

>It would also take thousands of passes to burnish a matte finish on steel into a polished one using leather, so I'm not sure that effect is of any practical relevance
Well, if you'd ever owned a gun with a matte slide, and a leather holster, you would know that not to be true. I'm not saying matte watches will come out "polished" after normal use, I'm saying spots on the surface will become shiny, over time, with normal use.

But you're right, it has little practical relevance, because the finish on your watch is an aesthetic choice, not a practical one.
>>
>>58453355
doesn't really matter. any non-dogshit movement will last forever if it's serviced regularly... and parts remain available.

I like what Damasko is doing. They seem to be a serious up-and-comer to in the marketplace and are filling that sorely unappreciated niche of "affordable luxury tool watches" that pretty much has nothing but maybe Tudor in that category/price range. Plus I like that they're doing in-house movements that are quite beautiful.

It's a shame that they will be destroyed by affirmative action laws when they get their mandatory quota of Syrian watchmakers.

Sad!

>>58453392

That being said, I would go with a manual wind provided you aren't prone to doing something stupid like winding it backwards. It feels really lovely to do that with very old watches and gives you a nice visceral connection to the watch and it's movement that you don't really get with automatics.

I understood the mechanics of what you were describing, what I was doubtful of is whether that microscopic effect had a large enough effect at the macro scale to be noticeable to the naked eye.

I don't own any guns, but I do own many knives which I sharpen myself, including owning and using leather strops. Plain leather takes an enormous number of passes to affect a large surface area on martensitic steels. Thousands of passes was an off the cuff guess at discounting the tens of thousands of passes I would it expect it to take on a large surface area of martensitic steel for the much softer steel.
