I still have no use for one,
i do however have plans about using one of the RFID-msp430's,
which are passively powered.
Those could amongst others emulate a mifare,
but there are quite a lot of applications.

Me too, that is why biopunk should be strongly promoted. Not only to offer an alternative in case shtf but because we are already been hacked by multitude of bio agents. And imagine if megacorps get to close source an important discovery, doesn't need to be a genetic backdoor just the only known schematics for the production of certain enzyme.

So far attempts at close sourcing biological models have been unsuccessful and reverse engineering the genome is widely regarded in the scientific community in contrast with electronics. Can't say the same on specific processes and chemical formulas though.

I've taken to using gentoo with openrc myself
It's much more flexible and very well documented. I still use Debian for certain machines but systemd is a threat to freedom and OS security

I wish Devuan had taken off but unfortunately a large majority of backing and dev contributions are corporate and that means supporting systemd

As someone in the bio science community, of course I'm going to push for bio. That said, doesn't care what element is made an arm from if its doing its job. What really concerns me is the current state of body enhancements and the horrible direction all is going.

We need open source or else you won't get high tech coupled with low life. It doesn't work that way and the biotech industry has shown something of the like. Describing what is happening to the biotech industry and why is in need of open source is a long story so I limit to suggest googling for Patent Trolling and Eroom's Law to anyone with questions.

biotech seems to be where IT was in the 90s, but with <= potential.

Just in R&D you can see statistics where the numbers are sinking. Costs rise and final products never get to the market. This is one of the things I meant when directing to patent trolling and erooms law for background. PT is kind of obvious, people who patent or buy patents just to hoard them and kill competition, not to actually develop anything, ANYthing. Result, we have the opposite advancement that electronics and we call it Eroom's Law, as in the opposite of Moore's Law.

It would be funny but actually it isn't. Just think for a second how many people depends on medication to live. And drugs not directly linked to survival will not see the light if the corporation owning the patent can't find a way to control its entire production, thus, any research showing great benefits of any kind. TL;DR you won't see any drug if it isn't hard to create, even if it is more potent in several orders of magnitude.

As one major concern is what you would get if something similar to what happened in Deus Ex HR happens, when one guy has a trait of not depending to a drug for functioning. You won't see shit and they'll make you depend on drugs for life.

Finally, although not is not all there is to say, body modifications as simple as resistance to some illnesses can actually being banned thanks to mass media bigotry sponsored by big corps as an attempt to suppress freedom from dependence, and independent, open source research and development banned as illegal for using "proprietary" assets.

A grim future that is.

The immediate need is getting hackers, they don't need to be bookworm scientists but should be interested in experiment with whatever is available ala Lepht.

Long term solution is having patents with GPL-like terms of use, and for that we need some entrepreneur basing his business on open sourced tech.
