Where do you obtain your SSL certificates? Is there a preferred spot to get them around here?
Is there any valid reason to pay $ a CA or is something like letsencrypt.org good enough?

Let's encrypt or amazon gives away for free if you use their ec2s and load balancers

Just sign them yourself

TLS now, SSL should be in the dumpster already.

It's the same certificate if you use TLS or SSL, what he calls it is not important.

Define "Good enough"?
The good thing about certificates is that it's just maths. As long as browsers support the root, a cheap certificate and an expensive certificate provide the same exact security.
The exception is the EV cert, which is the definition of a meme. Paying $2k+ so that users can get a green bar? I hope that comes out of marketing budget.
