Yahoo did split up a while ago.

They are sitting on a gold mine of owning a large share of alibaba and couldn't figure out a way of bringing that cash home without getting taxed through the ass.

So what they decided to do (or mayer + the board) was to spin off yahoo's core business (mainly the search engine shit) and then have a separate holding company for the alibaba shares it owns.

First, the web was just websites. No Google. Nothing.

Yahoo was the first index/listing/directory of websites. Before then, Sites would just link to other sites and you'd "surf" the web by going from site to site hoping to find something new. Sites made long lists of links to other sites and exchanged them for traffic.

Yahoo ambitiously tried to make an index of everything. It was hard coded, compiled by humans. The closest thing to the original Yahoo is this https://www.dmoz.org/

Being the first, Yahoo took off like fucking crazy. Then people started making robots that crawled links. Altavista was one of the first. They all worked like ass. No phrase searching, shitty multiple word searching. They sucked.

Google was the first auto compiled index that actually worked correctly. Still, it took like 10 years before people on the Internet realized it was vastly superior to everything else. It took another 10 years before Yahoo realized no one gave a shit about hand compiled indexes anymore and so they switched to their own web crawled index.

For a while there, Yahoo had the lion share of web traffic in the world. Maybe for about 20 years. That they could fuck that up is pretty insane.
