I have a 5.5" phone and while it's great for showing friends pictures or documents, pretty much everything else is a negative point with regards to screen size.

Agreed, provided you don't stick with the horrible fuckhueg dpi settings phones come with, it's stupid how they sell large phones which still can hardly display 5-6 words per line when browsing.

Nah not really, it still is considered great if a 5.5"+ phone has a battery over 3000mAh. This hasn't changed for about 3-4yrs and is stupid as fuck.
Meanwhile 5" and below pack in batteries similar or greater in capacity to phablets.

one handed use ability decreases as screen size goes up, so do ergonomics so using the keyboard only gets harder.

Forgiving the mi mix a bit because it squeezed that display in the body if the iphone 7 plus and actually packs a decent size 4400mAh battery.

I have the 5.7" Moto X Pure and it's perfect for me. Though I may have slightly above average hands. I also use the razer deathadder 2013 if that tells you anything. (inb4 razer hate).
My previous phone was Moto G '15 at 5". When I showed that to a few women they said it was pretty comfortable to use. My male friends mostly said that they wouldn't mind bigger, but one owns a Samsung Note so might call that an outlier.

Is this a thing, do they actually care? Only got asked if my OPO was the latest iphone a few times and that's it. They stopped talking when i said it wasn't, if you wanna know. Funny how it works.

Contrary to you, I have the OPO and my friends used to comment on how massive it was. Some still do, but since then the iphone pluses became a thing and the comments drastically reduced. Most of my techy friends prefer smaller phones and actually keep hold of the moto g 5" and another just got a z5 compact for a really good price.
Using a large phone in the cold is probably my biggest gripe, I just can't flex my hands enough and the cold numbs my fingers a bit so i don't detect slip as easily.
