Is Gentoo a distro for me /fglt/?

I've been using Arch for a year and despite some hiccups here and there I don't have any complaints. But the thing is I don't feel like Arch is a "DYI" distro and it feels like you end up downloading a bunch of shit that you don't use. This and the fact that everytime I use something related to systemd my computer crashes.

Having said that, should I unironically install Gentoo? I want a multipurpose distro and I don't mind wasting time fiddling with config files. I have a Intel CPU/AMD GPU (dunno if this is important).

You won't waste time with config files on Gentoo unless you do something retarded. You have 2 main config files for your package manager (portage): make.conf in which you configure your compiler and use flags (you literally write things you like) and package.use (use flags per program). And when you decide to install Gentoo try installing it from some kind lightweight live CD (like lubuntu, xubuntu) so you will have graphic interface, working browser and internet to copy/paste commands to terminal and gparted to making partitions. And you don't need swap partition, make instead swapfile. 30 GB is enough for root partition with swapfile inside.
My make.conf file: http://pastebin.com/E40azNJC
And if you break something during instalation, just chroot again on live CD.

So I switched GPUs because I was moving my high end nvidia to another system and was going to leave GT520 for my linux box.
I install the other card and now I can't boot into the system.

I'm stuck on "Loading initial ramdisk" and nothing happens. I've tried all the boot parameters like nomodeset and all that.
Tried some rescue live CDs same shit.

After 4 hours of failing to boot up the system I went ahead to reinstall, grab my bootable USB, once I hit Install in the menu, black screen.
Try two other distros, same thing. Get another USB stick, try again, nope!

I know for a fact the gpu works, I had the same problem on my other card but I fixed it by fiddling with CSM and secure boot options for hours. Now with the same settings it doesn't work. Spent my whole afternoon trying to get this load of shit to work. FUCK UEFI, FUCK SECURE BOOT, FUCK CSM WHO THE FUCK INVENTED THIS SHIT IT DOESN'T EVEN DO ANYTHING ISTEAD OF FUCKING EVERYTHING UP

I fucking give up I'll just download Windows...

Yes, you can. Don't use processor specific optimization with GCC, if you don't optimize with instruction sets that your machines don't have, there is no compatibility issues. My server with the backups also acts like a binhost so I don't have to compile shit.
Genkernel is easy and there are no downsides.

I've been running gnu/linux dualbooted with windows and I'm really happy with it. I'm thinking about switching to gnu/linux completely and wiping my windows partitions. I also happen to be an IT student and sometimes we have to do some work in windows and write protocols about it (mostly in network engineering). Can I rely on running windows as guest OS inside gnu/linux with everything working or should I keep the windows partitions but only shrink them?

There are benefits to both.
VM:
You can backup the image and run it on another computer.
You can do stuff simultaneously.
You can easily take snapshots in case you are testing something risky.
Dynamically allocated space.

Native:
Simpler networking
Better performance

I had a windows partition for a long time. Even after I switched to an SSD.
It was annoying enough to switch between operating systems I wouldn't do it unless I had to and that helped me convert everything in the beginning.
Now I use windows so rarely it is weird to have a partition for it.
So I have a windows image on my secondary drive, so I can just use quemu when I need it.

If you have the space, try it out, see if it is good enough and then use it.
It makes multitasking easier since you can stick to run that one thing in windows instead of everything.

Guys I really fucked up. I'm trying to dual boot Mint and Windows. I got Mint to run but now I can't get back into Windows. What do I do?

One of the difficulties I had earlier was that I couldn't make partitions for Mint because of isw raid..... something. I followed some instructions online to get rid of that, I installed Mint, but now when I try to go back to Windows it knows that it's there in Grub but it won't load.

what scrot commands do you guys have bound? currently I use xfce4-screenshooter, but I believe I could just use scrot and some different bindings/commands to do all the same things.

It has the option to scrot the whole screen, the active window, or a selected area. You can also add delay and choose to hide the cursor or not. I don't care much about the cursor thing, and the delay doesn't need to be very many different values. I'll generally want it at 1 second or less, maybe on occasion I'll want it 3 or 5 seconds for things you can't scrot because they disappear if you click something. (e.g. context menus)

I'm thinking in the short-term I'll put xfce4-screenshooter on the printscreen key in my i3 config, but I could probably have some different bindings for different types of scrots when I know what I'll want in the future.

No problem, happy to help out.

You'd have to edit your bootloader in order to be able to boot into Windows. I don't know how to do that and it can mess up your system if you get it wrong so I'm not about to make any guesses.

One thing worth mentioning is that when you restart, you'll have to mount the Windows partition again manually. You can make it automatically mount on restart by editing the /etc/fstab file. There's a guide to doing that here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Fstab

My guess is that when you installed Linux, the installer detected that you had a Windows installation and tried setting it up in grub, but got it wrong. I don't know how to fix it, sorry. The Windows installation itself is probably okay.

It's difficult for me to say, but if the files from the Windows partition are intact (e.g. the Windows folder, all the system folders and stuff) then my instinct is that it's going to be possible to get it booting again.

I guess you could look at your grubfile (probably at /boot/grub2/grub.cfg), in particular the Windows menu entry, and see if there's anything obviously wrong with it (e.g. wrong disk or partition).

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

I have a Thinkpad from 2010. Nehalem chip. The thing can be slow as shit sometimes. Unironically, no memes, would installing Gentoo be a good idea on this thing for moar speed? I've already got an SSD in there, and never find myself swapping RAM, so it's almost certainly a CPU-bound issue whenever it has problems.
>>
>>58416498
Gentoo would certainly help, but it's tough to say if you'd notice it. You'd also then have to deal with long compile times for most software. You CAN use binaries on Gentoo, but then you're gonna miss out on the speed of compiling everything for your system. What series is it? If it's T or W you might be able to upgrade the CPU. They were socketed.

>>58418383
you'll have to run it from the folder or move it to somewhere in your PATH
>>
>>58418850

He said he ran "make install", so it should be put in /usr/local/bin.

>>58418383

run
find / -iname "valgrind"
and see if it did get installed.

find /

Also Arch. Switching from Debian to Arch a year or two ago made me learn the Find command, though. You _can_ install mlocate to get the locate command, but it was my first time not having locate out of the box. I'm glad I now know how to use find. It's very powerful.

Funny that this comes from exactly the person who started the sjwbian meme for no reason.

Find your own reason why you want to switch. The link I provided should be a nice incentive.

I don't have locate installed. I also use find maybe once every fortnight, so I don't mind the few seconds of additional search time and hard drive activity.

>>58419608
It's honestly a really funny meme, I'm on Arch if it matters
