Once you've logged in you should make sure you have I3 in your xinitrc file.
To do that type

No you don't, you just have to swap the input. There are many ways to do this, maybe your (windows?) VM's GPU is connected to it by DP not DVI, swap input to DP after it's started. Some config settings are only available in forks and anon may have forgotten about it. Though I don't think it's the case for those.

I suggest installing i3-gaps(-next) whether or not you use the gaps (I don't) because it adds some other shit too.
